Where do morals come from???

Dictionary.com defines "moral" as "conforming to the rules of right conduct" (among many other definitions of course).
The question then, is what determines "right conduct", and I would have to agree with the majority in saying that society determines this. My society tells me that there are many things that are not defined as "right conduct". To use a common example: sleeping around. My favorite stray cat is in heat right now. She has been bringing her "boyfriends" to my front porch every night this week, and she is not ashamed that there are several of them. Because she is a cat, this is not an immoral way for her to act. If I acted like this however, most people would consider me to be immoral. Morality, in this case, is not defined by nature, but by the society one lives in. Another example (human this time) is the practice of cannibalism. In most developed societies, canabalism is considered immoral. It does not meet society's view of "right conduct". In some areas of the world however, canabalism is a ritualistic part of the funeral process, and not participating could be considered an insult to the deceased (though I believe that depends on your status in the community). For almost every immoral thing one can think of, there is an example in the world (or at least in history) of a society that would not view the act as immoral. (I said almost for a reason, for those of you with particularly macabre minds, leave it be, my imagination can fill in the gaps without your help) |

I don't even need to go with "slim" and "big fat". I would be perfectly happy with "fit" and "sufficient". |

Thank you Charles. He seemed to get the message very shortly after I asked the question, so either he gave up, or saw this post and realized that he wasn't going to get anywhere. I will remember your advice for the future though.

Is there a way to block a specific person from IMing me? I don't want to deal with that box floating in the corner, and every time I decline, he asks again!

While I won't wear a t-shirt to work, and I wont wear it to school if I'm teaching, I will wear it to school as a student (Hey, if my fellow students can come to class in the same hoodie and pajama pants every say, I can wear my free "Don't be a scardy cat, give blood" of "Bad grammar makes me [sic]" t-shirt once in a while).
I don't dress up for church, but I usualy wear the same types of blouses I wear to work, rather then my printed t-shirts. As far as dates go, it depends entirely on where the date is. A movie theater? Rock that t-shirt! Live Theater? Depends on the level of the theater. Volunteer theater usually isn't a dress-up event, but a show with actors who are making a living out of acting should be. |

lots of different shrimp out there bro. probably a cartiledge or carapace formation. if it is a spine then you just deveined a pound and a half of missing links between fish and crustaceans. (fish and mammals have spines...crusteceans don't)..... oh crap....apparently all that work for the Museums of Natural history made me into a dork. I think he ment a spike...like a cactus spine. I have never seen a shrimp with a spine formation on it. DO you have a photo? That makes it a lot easier to ID. The fin on the tail can be a little sharp, but I wouldn't classify it as a spine. |

My First "Trick"...

I like both, as long as the tricks are harmless, and you help clean up after them if it makes a mess.
I'm partial to t he "office stuffed with packing peanuts" gag. You cover the inside of the office windows with paper or plastic wrap, fill the space between the plastic wrap and the glass with packing peanuts (don't neglect the window on the office door!), so that it looks like the office is filled, but you only have to use a couple packages of peanuts. Minimal cleanup, and you give your associate something to think about when he walks towards his office that morning. Also, the "Cover everything in the office with tin foil" gag is create, but requires a little more time. Good for an associate on vacation. |

IMHO, they will always think about thee possibility of being more, but a true friends wont act on it. He wont want to risk the ruin of a good friendship. That doesn't mean that he isn't allowed to tease and flirt a bit...it's good for the other party's ego.

Well, if the other fellows don't know the guy is gay, they may assume that you are taken. That assumption may indeed keep them away. I know if I saw a guy dancing with a girl, I probably wouldn't go up to him, to my mind, it would be obvious that he is already occupied.
Edit: Oh, sorry, I didn't read the replies. No, I don't think just the knowledge that you once (or even regularly) danced with a gay guy would keep other guys away. Why should it? |

Mine broke up with me at the beginning of Junior year. We didn't speak for about 3 months, and then started to cautiously become re-acquainted.
We are now very good friends, perhaps better even, then when we were going out. He has a standing invitation to my wedding, in the eventuality that I have one. |

My cats and dog are family, so they are already out. Besides that, My purse, since thats got my ID, bank card, check book, etc. in it. If I can access my accounts, then I some small way of setting things right. Indecently, my car keys are attached to my purse, so that wouldn't be a problem.
For a second item, I haven't set it up yet, but I have every intention of creating a bug-out bag for emergencies (it will contain important papers that don't travel in my purse, the credit cards I don't already use, and traditional survival items that I would normally pack for a camping trip). |
