moderators have to register for the site like everyone else. How do you prove anyone is who they claim to be? We volunteer our time, so there wasn't a need to prove who we are before since taxes aren't involved. Not sure how anyone can prove who they are online....to be honest. Even on paying sites...someone can be using someone elses credit card. There was no way to tie this alias to Keith Willis before now because the authorities didn't even know. I always thought Lex was his real name. How do you do a background check on Lex Fonteyne? When people register...they could use someone elses name. I'm sure Kristi and I can confirm ID's with each other since we live so close (show ID's to each other) but people are here from all over the world.

I have no problem with a back ground check, but how do you prove who you are?

I would think that if someone did a background check on Lex Fonteyne, they wouldn't come up with much except for his online persona. That should be a red flag.

So yes, a background check could have picked up something odd like that.

Like I said...I always thought THAT was his real name. But I could use my sister's information....how would anyone know? You could be using your neighbor's information....how would anyone know?

So, you think that all the companies that do background checks on potential employees wouldn't find out if you gave them false information?

flowerforyou      brokenheart ((((((Whisper))))) & ((((((Eileen))))))

I see so many here say that they "never interacted with him much" and this is a testimonial type site. So I will admit that I was one who thought I knew him "well" or as well as you can know someone soley online that you haven't talked to in a few years.

I joined Mingle back when it was "Justsayhi" and one of the first threads I EVER spoke in was a pirate/llama/rum thread with Eileen, Whisper, Burgandybry, Captain and "Lex." This was my first introduction to "online dating" and the whole online scene.

A year or so later I met my now husband on here, and have not been here for a good number of years, but still talked to many I had met on here, including "Lex."

There are not words for the betrayal that I (and so many others) are feeling at this exact moment. Love, hugs, and flowers for my friends (and those who I have not met) who are feeling similarly saddened, sickened, outraged and... There are not words for the emotions I am currently feeling.

Thank you Charles, and Admin for your swift actions in this matter.

((((((Lizzy)))) ((((Eileen))))

"Lex" I believed joined this site January of 2007 I know it was not too too long after I did. But like you Lizzy even though I was not always an active member on here, I was still stayed in active communication with Keith. Lex does not exist to me anymore. At this point I am sorry to say not even online friendships exist to me anymore. Aquantences maybe, but not friendships. I just feel so betrayed, hurt, so dumbfounded.

You know I was sitting in the waiting room of the doctors today doing a cross word, and the answer to one of the clues was "llama", and i just started crying right then and there. I could not control the tears, the pain is just so strong and powerful, it is taking over my own strength. How does one EVER get over something like this? It is going to take a very long time. The news cast video that I watched just keeps playing over and over again in my mind.I cannot get it out!

I wish I could say that I am sorry for ever helping him, ever laughing with him, ever cried, and confided in him, but really I am not, because in the end I KNOW it was me being real. Even if he was not real, then that is HIS problem, it is him that is paying now NOT me. Sure like I said it will be a VERY long time before I trust anybody online again, But that is OK, I know I it is me that is going to always remain me!

((((((((((whisper)))))))) I wish there were words. I love you... and you are right, I know that I am me, I have always been. No fake profiles, no imaginary persona, just me.

Terry, is this what you are trying to say

"Lex asked me to run a background check on him once as I will do for friends and he came up as non-existent but many people with no credit, homes, etc. do.

Lex asked me as many friends do to run a background on him. He came up as non-existent."

Okay, I will phrase it better. I have the ability to run background checks. Lex and I were friends at one point and got into a big fight and never spoke again. While we were friends, he asked me to run a background check on him. He came up "No records found" on all counts including sex offenders. There is no other Lex with that name. If you google him, he is everywhere but in law enforcement datebases, he does not exist. However if you have never committed a crime or have no credit cards or loans, you can come up "No Records Found" like him.

I run guys before I date them. I am wary of those with No Records Found. Often you can even find out who the person lives with and if they are married, their job title, the salary, etc. You would be amazed. Lex came up simply "No Records Found".

He always said "Lex Fonteyne" was his real name and he had "nothing to hide". It was the name he wrote his books under and the name on his facebook as well as other email accounts he gave me.

There was at least one thread Eileena, one of those
'how did you pick your username' threads wherein he
told how he selected the name, it not being his real one.
I don't want to hunt for it, but I do remember it.

When we started chatting in emails, he told me it was his real name but told people it wasn't as a bit of a joke.

he said something like that to me a while back too
me too.

You know like I said in in my first post on this thread. A part of me always knew that it was not his real name. From them moment of that one phone call to him at the vacuum shop, and somebody refired to him as "Keith" Why did I not stop and say whoooo hold on a minute, even after he told me it was his middle name or some crap like that, I will never know. I KNEW the name Keith! DAMN IT! I am just SO stupid! SO blind! I really liked the *insert a whole bunch of nasty names not allowed to be posted on this site* Lesson learned I guess...

I just found a thread where he said
he got his name "off a book cover" he saw.

Did i say all? Not many would catch it...no. I've done criminal checks and fingerprints for companies when I worked for the Arlington PD. If I wanted to get fingerprinted...I could take my sister's ID there and it wouldn't be caught. Most companies have too many employees to investigate in detail every employee. The PD I worked for could only give any arrests in our city. We aren't linked to other cities.

I'm saying there are ways to get around things if someone wants to hide something.

I knew it was a pen name and was not disturbed by it. All of my writing is under my exs last name. I have not written in years. I finally got a copy of my college degree in my correct name. Jesse The Body Ventura got Ventura off of a map of California. Stage and pen names are not uncommon. Look at how dull his real name is.

A small handful of you know my real last name.

I have explained Tea Dipper before. Tea is just T and Dipper is part of my exs last name

actually, that sounds perfectly legit if you asked for him by name and they knew who you were referring to,,,,

I am one who goes by my middle name at work, yet when people call for me by my first name, the employer knows who they want and they still call me my middle name instead...

I think the point she is trying to make is that if someone REALLY wanted to be deceptive they could possibly find a way. Not necessarily that it would never be caught, just that it's possible it could go undetected for an unspecified amount of time.

I wanted to know how people are dealing with this loss. We believed in Lex in a positive way much as a child believes in Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny, or The Tooth Fairy. Remember how you felt when that was taken away from you? I see that as sort of the same thing. We all wanted to believe something was real. Our clever friend who did Glorious Profile threads, who was a grammar and spelling freak, etc. Keep in mind he did not date those with children. He did not play with women's minds. There were good aspects to him as the character he wanted us to believe. Anger is one of the five stages of grief. I believe we are all grieving the loss of a friend though he was a front. How are you personally dealing with your loss, those of you who had become friends with him?

Yes, this makes sense. She seemed to be saying they'd never get caught. That may not have been what she meant, though.
