moderators have to register for the site like everyone else. How do you prove anyone is who they claim to be? We volunteer our time, so there wasn't a need to prove who we are before since taxes aren't involved. Not sure how anyone can prove who they are online....to be honest. Even on paying sites...someone can be using someone elses credit card. There was no way to tie this alias to Keith Willis before now because the authorities didn't even know. I always thought Lex was his real name. How do you do a background check on Lex Fonteyne? When people register...they could use someone elses name. I'm sure Kristi and I can confirm ID's with each other since we live so close (show ID's to each other) but people are here from all over the world.

I have no problem with a back ground check, but how do you prove who you are?

Was discussing this very thing with a friend today...Perhaps skype along with background checks would help when screening or interviewing potential moderators.....At least you could match a picture with a live video and maybe get a read on body language ...Internet duplicity is a tough situation for site owners and members......flowerforyou

I would think that if someone did a background check on Lex Fonteyne, they wouldn't come up with much except for his online persona. That should be a red flag.

So yes, a background check could have picked up something odd like that.

you wouldnt find much on Ms Harmony either,,, except online persona

thats not really that 'odd',, some people dont do much thats 'cyber' worthy,,,,and they dont participate in many cyber social networks,,,

He always said "Lex Fonteyne" was his real name and he had "nothing to hide". It was the name he wrote his books under and the name on his facebook as well as other email accounts he gave me.

that would help with the pictures....but my pic is of a cartoon laugh I might fail that test.

But background checks only work if you can prove the info given is correct. Even if mods were paid...people can get fake ID's. I could use my sister's info. Many ways to get out of it if someone wanted to.

Believe me...I'm all for background checks. I have nothing to hide. My point is how does the employer prove I am who I say I am over the internet? I live in Texas and I'm not driving to California just for a background check (unless they are paying for it) laugh

He always said "Lex Fonteyne" was his real name and he had "nothing to hide". It was the name he wrote his books under and the name on his facebook as well as other email accounts he gave me.

Lex asked me to run a background check on him once as I will do for friends and he came up as non-existent but many people with no credit, homes, etc. do.

Lex asked me as many friends do to run a background on him. He came up as non-existent.

There was at least one thread Eileena, one of those
'how did you pick your username' threads wherein he
told how he selected the name, it not being his real one.
I don't want to hunt for it, but I do remember it.

Terry, is this what you are trying to say

"Lex asked me to run a background check on him once as I will do for friends and he came up as non-existent but many people with no credit, homes, etc. do.

Lex asked me as many friends do to run a background on him. He came up as non-existent."

After my bad experiences, I am not shocked.

I say we should just chalk it up to bad life experience and move forward.

flowerforyou      brokenheart ((((((Whisper))))) & ((((((Eileen))))))

I see so many here say that they "never interacted with him much" and this is a testimonial type site. So I will admit that I was one who thought I knew him "well" or as well as you can know someone soley online that you haven't talked to in a few years.

I joined Mingle back when it was "Justsayhi" and one of the first threads I EVER spoke in was a pirate/llama/rum thread with Eileen, Whisper, Burgandybry, Captain and "Lex." This was my first introduction to "online dating" and the whole online scene.

A year or so later I met my now husband on here, and have not been here for a good number of years, but still talked to many I had met on here, including "Lex."

There are not words for the betrayal that I (and so many others) are feeling at this exact moment. Love, hugs, and flowers for my friends (and those who I have not met) who are feeling similarly saddened, sickened, outraged and... There are not words for the emotions I am currently feeling.

Thank you Charles, and Admin for your swift actions in this matter.

((((((Lizzy)))) ((((Eileen))))

"Lex" I believed joined this site January of 2007 I know it was not too too long after I did. But like you Lizzy even though I was not always an active member on here, I was still stayed in active communication with Keith. Lex does not exist to me anymore. At this point I am sorry to say not even online friendships exist to me anymore. Aquantences maybe, but not friendships. I just feel so betrayed, hurt, so dumbfounded.

You know I was sitting in the waiting room of the doctors today doing a cross word, and the answer to one of the clues was "llama", and i just started crying right then and there. I could not control the tears, the pain is just so strong and powerful, it is taking over my own strength. How does one EVER get over something like this? It is going to take a very long time. The news cast video that I watched just keeps playing over and over again in my mind.I cannot get it out!

I wish I could say that I am sorry for ever helping him, ever laughing with him, ever cried, and confided in him, but really I am not, because in the end I KNOW it was me being real. Even if he was not real, then that is HIS problem, it is him that is paying now NOT me. Sure like I said it will be a VERY long time before I trust anybody online again, But that is OK, I know I it is me that is going to always remain me!
