I agree with you 100% Msharmony. Why not make an elective class in school on religion, and the different books that make up different religions? Why forbid the Bible in school?

truly, I think it should be voted on. I think districts should allow the taxpayers to decide which curriculum they want being taught to their children. But, in any case, there are other alternatives for those who still wish to have Christ be a part of their child's life. I am sending my child to a christian school, but its a shame to feel like I have to just to keep her from feeling like an outsider.

I think the Bible is kept out of public school because people want nothing at all to do with "Jesus"

We don't talk about him, we dislike nativity scenes, we want him taken out of our pledge of alegance, and off our money. Keeping him out of school is just another attempt to remove God from America

I think we went from two extremes, that as a christian are equally offensive to me. From MANDATING people learn the bible to REFUSING to allow the bible in at all.

The bible is a time tested document. Whether people believe in it or not. It is a VALUABLE resource. IT is a uniting factor of BILLIONS upon the earth, and it is a valuable living guide for MOST Americans. To DENY it in schools is a move that stigmatizes it in society. It is as much a unifier as language, but we have no problem with keeping English in schools AND allowing other types of language there too. The christian community is as prevelant in our country as the LGBT and we have no problem including their story and their struggle into our curriculums.

The problem I have is that we can have NO type of relgion in school anymore because we are so terrified of offending people. We have stigmatized christianity this way just as sure as not permitting LGBT references in school was stigmatizing that community. This is excluding people the same way those who are in favor of it accuse religion of doing.

There should be no harm in teaching the bible just as it is. Explaining that it is the best selling book in the world and a guide that many people live by and teaching it from that standpoint. But too many people have come to have disdain for anything biblical or christian.

wrong wrong wrong.

How would you feel if the Koran was taught in schools.. and not the Bible also?

Only problem I would see with this is if people were going to vote on things as Christianity, Buddhism, and so forth they would also fight for things such as Satanism, or Voodooism, ect. And cause problems and or disruptions if these were not allowed as well.

I would plead for the Koran to be taught in schools along with the Bible. I think if people really read the Koran, they would be stunned at how violent that book is. But, I think a course in public schools on all religious books would be fantastic.

Why not make it an elective course? Jeanniebean, are you on board?

A class on religion is a class on all theology. Electives that are a study of religion are readily available in College. They are not necessary in regular public schools. Kids have enough stuff to learn without confusing them with a bunch of different religious beliefs.

You forbid the Bible in school because it is teaching religion. Sunday is the day for studying the Bible. You have the entire day.

Not in the least.

And I was shocked at how violent the Bible was. Horrified in fact.

Because it is a belief, not consider fact or history. Because it is a religion. And because children need to learn to read, write and operate computers so they can make a living in the world.

No I personally don't want to vote, even if Christianity did win. Church and state should be kept separate. And if taught in school it would put it on less of a "faith" basis. Things taught in school are absolute fact, for the time being anyways. If Christianity was taught in school even as an elective, it would put it more on a factual level. Faith is the greatest thing in the world. And we will be judged on our faith. Actions alone can not save a person nor can faith alone. But faith plays a huge part of it. And again if it was taught in school it would take it off the faith level and make it moreso on the absolute factual level. Maybe some after school get togethers yes. But not specifically taught IN school during school time.

As for the Bible being taught only on Sundays, people play sports on Sundays. Does that mean sports should not be in schools.

Because it is religion! It is not considered "fact" or even "history." I've said that before.

Besides, most people can't even drag their kids to church on Sunday, I doubt if they would elect to take a class on religion in school. There is too much other stuff they need to learn...like how to read. And the aren't even doing that. Today, most kids entering college can't even write a correct paragraph or sentence, can't spell etc.

I think sports are about physical fitness. And they don't just do that on Sundays. They practice every day, swimming, etc.

C'mon. What's the real reason why you are against the Bible in school. What do you think will happen if people learn about the Bible in school?

The real reason is that it is a waste of time to 'teach' the Bible in school. It would be like an entire course on the Harry Potter series or the Hobbits. There is no point. If they want to learn the Bible, then they can just get one and start reading it.

We teach home economics, we teach wood class, we teach all types of things that are not REQUIRED for them to succeed in life, because we see them as valuable tools. People (hopefully) think for themselves. You don't vote on what religion you want everyone to study or follow. Period.

Its a matter of personal choice. You also don't ask an entire school to bow their heads and pray to God, Jesus, Allah, Satan, or any other God.

You just don't force your beliefs on other people. Period.

If I wanted to bow my head and pray to your God I would go to your church.

who determines what is a 'waste of time',,,shouldnt that be the taxpaeyers decision?

And if it it was an elective it wouldn't be forcing EVERYONE. Nor would it be forcing the people that took the class. They can learn about the religion they are taking the elective for, they wouldn't have to "worship" the beliefs in that religion, just merely learning of that religion they took the elective for. Notice ELECTIVE, that is a choice, not forcing anyone.

We teach sex education so hopefully your daughters aren't pregnant before they graduate.

There are no sex churches or institutions for teaching sex education on the weekends.

Home economics, wood class, etc. are skill for living. They are not PERSONAL RELIGIONS BELIEFS or a religion.

Teaching the Bible is about teaching religion... unless you are using it as an example of a myth along with the Greek Gods etc. How would you like it taught that way? Probably you would kick up a fit if it was not taught as truth.

and here is where you 'dont get it'. I have mentioned nowhere that it should be FORCED.

I said it should be put to a vote(Which by default means its going to happen or not happen against the wishes of at least SOME)

I didnt say anyone should be forced to pray. I said the book should be taught as a historical reference and a social and community resource.

I also didnt say to FORCE a belief. I said to PERMIT(as in elective)and INCLUDE the bible into the school as a way of studying a very vital and dominant CULTURE in society which happens to use the BIBLE as a guide.

I dont quite understand why people feel that if the Bible is present or if someone is present who believes in the Bible, this is somehow FORCING them to do anything.
