Since there's people from all over in these forums, do you find it offensive to be called any of the names mentioned above?

I kind of like it, actually. It sure beats most of the other stuff I get called.

I've seen others refer to you in those same terms also Lex, I never saw them as disrepecting you in any way!

Not at all -- the ones who do that inevitably mean it as a term of endearment, and it's appreciated.

I'm about as far north as you can go, without entering Canada, and in my employment when I assist customers of the fairer sex, I have a tendency to use "hon" often (just me, I guess)...never gave it much thought....but I do get a lot of smiles...must be my overwhelming personality..laugh

I'm from NY. I remember the first time I got called hon by a woman. I was so mad! I still find it terribly insulting and degrading comming from a woman that I don't know. I have a co-worker and she use's this term all of the time. With her, I don't mind. I know her and we are friend's.

Another reason for the thread, it never occurred to me that using those terms would be thought of as "shallow or fake" or as to how many sexual partners one might have had!

I don't see any reason why anybody would get all bent out of shape from somebody calling them "hon" or something like it, simply because they don't know your name. Believe me, they COULD call you something much worse, so the choice is yours.

Shine it on. It ain't that big of a deal.

I do it too, with women I know, I'll use "hon".
If older than me and not someone who I am very familiar with, no.
Especially if its a patient at work. That was beaten into us not to ever refer to a patient as
"hon".
Do I mind, never.
Men are simple like that.

In a professional atmosphere, I don't use it either, with the exception of clients I've known "forever" and then we both exchange those forms of reference.

I call those I dont know, sir, ma'am, especially if they are older than I.

All depends on circumstance of our meeting if professional - I address in a professional manner.

If in a social scene, I usually avoid pet names, but I am known for using 'sunshine' and or 'sexy'. But only after I get a read on the other person and feel they would not mind, unless my intent is that they mind devil

People in the south, mostly females, I don't know exactly what the males might use, we call people "hon, sugar, darlin, etc". Most of the time, it's a form of endearment, but you'll find waitresses, clerks, etc. that don't know you, referring to you in one of these ways, simply acknowleding that you exist since we don't know your name. Twice, in the past month I've been reproached because I called someone "hon". Neither time did I know this persons name, one even after 4 emails wouldn't sign or say his name, the other mocked me in a thread. Since there's people from all over in these forums, do you find it offensive to be called any of the names mentioned above?

Not a fan of it from people I don't know. Once people get to know me, it's alright.

If you assume because someone calls you darlin that that's something they'd call just anyone than that would be wrong in my case because I use that term for friendsflowerforyou

I say "yes mam" or "yes sir" to people of all ages. I said "yes mam" to a teenage waitress one evening and she just looked at me with this horrified look and asked, "Do I look that old?"rofl rofl

I smiled and told her no and that I was only using the manners my Mom had instilled in me. It's just habit with me.
