I myself very seldom use those terms and I'm from Texas. I have noticed those in Alabama,Georgia and Louisiana tend to use those terms more then the area I'm at. As for me normally the only time I use those terms are within a relationship or with real good friends.
I have several of my friends that do use the terms it did take me a bit to get use to them. But does it bother me not really. Only time that it tends to get on my nerves are with those that I have never spoken to and they use them then I kinda think okay. But... it does not bother me so much that it makes me mad I just have to remember that some say and take things different then the way I was raised. Now see what took me by surprise are those that will say I love ya but to them it is only a term of endearment not like between two people that now does make me cringe for I was not raised to say those words and very seldom heard them. So therefore not sure how they mean them. Myself I say I love you to family now and my kids all the time and the one I'm in-love with. But just was never use to saying it to friends. |

Having lived in Central Fla. most of my life and in Texas 5 years, my experience is that you are most likely to hear those terms from a waitress who is trying to be polite.
But, I do not like to be addressed that way, and to hear it from a much younger person makes it seem condescending. I was raised to say "ma'am" or "sir" but, having worked with the public, have found that Northerners do not like that either. They are not accustomed to Southern manners. That is not meant to be taken as a criticism of Northerners. Its all about regional customs. My thoughts would be, enjoy the diversity, try to be kind to everyone as best you can, and try not to be critical of others. Most of us need some improvement in one way or another ourselves. |
