Having lived in Central Fla. most of my life and in Texas 5 years, my experience is that you are most likely to hear those terms from a waitress who is trying to be polite.

But, I do not like to be addressed that way, and to hear it from a much younger person makes it seem condescending. I was raised to say "ma'am" or "sir" but, having worked with the public, have found that Northerners do not like that either. They are not accustomed to Southern manners. That is not meant to be taken as a criticism of Northerners. Its all about regional customs.

My thoughts would be, enjoy the diversity, try to be kind to everyone as best you can, and try not to be critical of others. Most of us need some improvement in one way or another ourselves.
