Bush's great legacy needs bumped. When Reagan left office, he was called one of the worst presidents in American history by Historians. He's now considered one of the best. George Bush won't get a fair shake from anyone who is a mindless partisan. It will be awhile before Americans can look at the Bush years as they truly were. But while it might take a generation before Bush gets his due in America, free Afganis and Iraqis are already singing his praises. Those who appreciate the sacrifices that America made so that they could have freedom and their daughters could walk down the street without a Burka or an escort or their daughters can go to school, those people are already thanking Bush for what he has done. You can't even begin to compare Afghanistan to Iraq. One was a response to an attack by actual terrorists. The other was waged under a cover of lies and misinformation. Every intelligence agency in the world thought Iraq had WMDs or was close to having them. That is common knowledge. Bush had bad intelligence. Sorry! It happens. Especially when Saddam WANTED the world to think he had WMDs. Democrats were all over the airwaves form when Bush announced the invasion until four months post invasion talking about how Iraq had WMDs, it was just a matter of finding them. Then suddenly, when it looked like we weren't going to find any, the Democrats start whining about the war. You might have a selective memory, but I don't. So you are either not informed enough to discuss the issue or you are a liar. Because this information is easily and widely available. You are on the internet to post your silly little response, hit google and actually learn something instead of just towing the party line. "If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program." --President Bill Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998 "We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction." -- Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002 "I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority to use force -- if necessary -- to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security." -- Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Oct. 9, 2002 "Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation ... And now he is miscalculating America's response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction ... So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real..." -- Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Jan. 23. 2003 THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!! Lol, awfully defensive here. I believe I can post regardless of whether you think it is informed or not. Whether you agree or not, the world was sold a bill of goods on Iraq that was refuted even before the war started. There's no need for you to be rude or a bully. Why don't you talk to the moderators about it? Here, I'll write the email for you: Spidercmb made me look like a complete idiot because I posted a fallacious reply about a subject that I have no knowlege about. Oh, because you were blinders everyone else is blind? Just because the facts and history support my statements and refute his, that's no reason to think I'm right, huh? Listen. If everyone in the world stood up and said "You are wrong on this SpiderCMB", I would just shake my head in pity for those who are willfully ignorant. If you want to number yourself with the willfully ignorant, how do you think that effects me personally? I'll tell you one thing, it gives me a good belly laugh. SPIDER....SO WELL PUT..... LINDYY |

The war in Afghanistan is going badly for us so those girls won't be going to school long.Better to bring them here for education and then send them back to help improve their country. No, it's going quite well. Their fate is in Obama's hands, I hope he doesn't take his responsibility lightly. |

Okay, gonna buy your arguement that other presidents have made questionable pardons. LA LA LA Seems to me anyone who thought other presidents have made questionable pardons would support reining in that power or at least redefining it. That is another issue. One it seems we all agree on. Depending on timing it seems. Here is what makes potential Bush pardons different and well stinky. It seems he wants to offer blanket pardons to political appointees and people who did, within the administration, things that were if not illegal were legally questionable. Thing is we don't know for sure. Bush doesn't want us to know. That alone is a little scary. He isn't god or King...he is our employee and he is accountable to us. Remember? He swore to support and defend the Constitution. On the Bible too! Blanket pardons, before an investigation or charges, block the public from knowing the facts and block accountability. Now, loving Bush that might make that fine for 15 minutes but if you let him do this as he backs out the door to live on federal fat welfare the rest of his life you should stop and think for just a minute. Bush gets away with this and so will future presidents. It sets a precedent in law that might allow future presidents to do what ever they'd like and then as they walk out the door claim presidential privilege, issue pardons to all involved and walk away to live on your nickle the rest of their lives. Getting this down to grade school reasoning...two wrongs do not make a right. Seems there is a virus of "do as democrats say, not as they do" going around. |

[1] Federal prosecutor Mary Jo White was appointed to investigate the pardons. She was later replaced by James Comey. Comey found no grounds to indict Clinton. [edit] FALN Commutation of 1999 On August 11, 1999, Clinton commuted the sentences of 16 members of FALN, a violent Puerto Rican nationalist group that set off 120 bombs in the United States mostly in New York City and Chicago, convicted for conspiracies to commit robbery, bomb-making, and sedition, as well as for firearms and explosives violations.[3] None of the 16 were convicted of bombings or any crime which injured another person, though they were sentenced with terms ranging from 35 to 105 years in prison for the conviction of conspiracy and sedition. Congress, however, recognizes that the FALN is responsible for "6 deaths and the permanent maiming of dozens of others, including law enforcement officials." All of the 16 had served 19 years or longer in prison, which was a longer sentence than such crimes typically received, according to the White House.[4] Clinton offered clemency, on condition that the prisoners renounce violence, at the appeal of 10 Nobel Peace Prize laureates, President Jimmy Carter, the cardinal of New York, and the archbishop of Puerto Rico. The commutation was opposed by U.S. Attorney's Office, the FBI, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons and criticized by many including former victims of FALN terrorist activities, the Fraternal Order of Police,[5] members of Congress. Hillary Clinton, then campaigning for her first term in the Senate, initially supported the commutation,[6] but later withdrew her support when the prisoners had refused to renounce violence more than three weeks after clemency was offered.[7] Congress condemned the action, with a vote of 95-2 in the Senate and 311-41 in the House.[8][9] The U.S. House Committee on Government Reform held an investigation on the matter, but the Justice Department prevented FBI officials from testifying.[10] President Clinton cited executive privilege for his refusal to turn over some documents to Congress related to his decision to offer clemency to members of the FALN terrorist group. [edit] Edgar and Vonna Jo Gregory pardons In March 2000, Bill Clinton pardoned Edgar and Vonna Jo Gregory, owners of the carnival company United Shows International, for charges of bank fraud from a 1982 conviction. Although the couple had already been released from prison, the prior conviction prevented them from doing business in certain American states. First Lady Hillary Clinton's youngest brother, Tony Rodham, was an acquaintance of the Gregorys, and had lobbied Clinton on their behalf.[11] In October 2006, the group Judicial Watch filed a request with the U.S. Justice Department for an investigation, alleging that Rodham had received $107,000 from the Gregorys for the pardons, in the form of loans that were never repaid, as part of a quid pro quo scheme.[12] [edit] Pardons and commutations signed on final day in office Clinton issued 140 pardons as well as several commutations on his last day of office, January 20, 2001.[13] When a sentence is commuted, the conviction remains intact, but the sentence can be altered in a number of ways. Some controversial actions include the following: Peter MacDonald - The day before President Clinton left office, U.S. Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy lobbied the White House to commute the sentence of the former leader of the Navajo Nation. MacDonald was sentenced to 14 years at a Federal Prison in Texas for fraud, extortion, inciting riots, bribery, and corruption stemming from the Navajo purchase of the Big Boquillas Ranch in Northwestern Arizona. He was commuted after serving 10 years. Carlos A. Vignali had his sentence for cocaine trafficking commuted, after serving 6 of 15 years in federal prison. Almon Glenn Braswell was pardoned of his mail fraud and perjury convictions, even while a federal investigation was underway regarding additional money laundering and tax evasion charges.[14] Braswell and Carlos Vignali each paid approximately $200,000 to Hillary Clinton's brother, Hugh Rodham, to represent their respective cases for clemency. Hugh Rodham returned the payments after they were disclosed to the public.[15] Braswell would later invoke the Fifth Amendment at a Senate Committee hearing in 2001, when questioned about allegations of his having systematically defrauded senior citizens of millions of dollars.[16] Linda Sue Evans and Susan Rosenberg were pardoned. Weather Underground members, they were imprisoned on weapons and explosives charges.[17][18] Marc Rich, a fugitive, was pardoned of tax evasion, after clemency pleas from Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak, among many other international luminaries. He was required to pay a $100 million dollar fine and waive any use of the pardon as a defense against any future civil charges that were filed against him in the same case. Critics complained that Denise Rich, his former wife, had made substantial donations to the Clinton library and to Mrs. Clinton's senate campaign. Emails uncovered during the course of the investigation revealed that her final donation was provided a year before Scooter Libby requested that she approach Clinton for a pardon. According to Paul Volcker's independent investigation of Iraqi Oil-for-Food kickback schemes, Marc Rich was a middleman for several suspect Iraqi oil deals involving over 4 million barrels of oil.[19] Susan McDougal, who had already completed her sentence, was pardoned for her role in the Whitewater scandal; McDougal had served 18 months on contempt charges for refusing to testify about Clinton's role. Dan Rostenkowski, a former Democratic Congressman convicted in the Congressional Post Office Scandal. Rostenkowski had served his entire sentence. Melvin J. Reynolds, a Democratic Congressman from Illinois, who was convicted of bank fraud, 12 counts of sexual assault, obstruction of justice, and solicitation of child pornography had his sentence commuted on the bank fraud charge and was allowed to serve the final months under the auspices of a half way house. He had served his entire sentence on child sex abuse charges before the commutation of the later convictions. Roger Clinton, the president's half-brother, on drug charges after having served the entire sentence more than a decade before. Roger Clinton would be charged with drunk driving and disorderly conduct in an unrelated incident within a year of the pardon.[20] He was also briefly alleged to have been utilized in lobbying for the Braswell pardon, among others. However, no wrongdoing was uncovered. On Feb. 18, 2001, Clinton wrote a New York Times column defending the 140 pardons.[21] List of people pardoned by Bill Clinton From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search The following is a partial list of people pardoned by Bill Clinton[1]. As President Bill Clinton used his power under the U.S. Constitution to grant pardons and clemency to 456 people, thus commuting the sentences of those already convicted of a crime, and obviating a trial for those not yet convicted. On January 20, 2001, he pardoned 140 people in the final hours of his presidency[2]. This list is a subset of the list of people pardoned by a United States president. This list is incomplete; you can help by expanding it. Contents [hide] 1 Definitions 2 Commutations 3 Pardons 4 See also 5 References [edit] Definitions This list is a subset of the list of people pardoned by a United States president. The order in the list of pardons is alphabetical, the year is the date of conviction. Commutations are shown in chronological order. A pardon means an executive order vacating a conviction. As a result, their criminal record on this particular incident is now "clean", the social stigma of having been convicted of a crime is removed, and there are no future legal implications regarding the prohibition of some activities which may have created by the now-pardoned conviction e.g. being unable to legally possess a handgun. A commutation means a mitigation of the sentence of someone currently serving a sentence for a crime pursuant to a conviction, without vacating the conviction itself. As a result, the fact that they have been convicted of a crime remains on the person's criminal record. The existence of this conviction may have future implications e.g. restricting/prohibiting some activities or being automatically disqualified from applying for certain jobs. So much for letting people celebrate THEIR holy holidays...right? Whatever happened to live & let live. OOPS! I forgot...that for the politically correect only & all others need not apply. Same old story with these loonies. the only commercializing I see are from the gobless who want everyone else to be equally as miserable as they are. Bah Humbug to them. Ho, ho, nope! FGCU to limit holiday decor Christmas is just 30 days away, but Santa Claus won't be stopping by Florida Gulf Coast University this holiday. He's not allowed on campus. FGCU administration has banned all holiday decorations from common spaces on campus and canceled a popular greeting card design contest, which is being replaced by an ugly sweater competition. In Griffin Hall, the university's giving tree for needy preschoolers has been transformed into a "giving garden." The moves boil down to political correctness. "Public institutions, including FGCU, often struggle with how best to observe the season in ways that honor and respect all traditions," President Wilson Bradshaw wrote in a memo to faculty and staff Thursday. "This is a challenging issue each year at FGCU, and 2008 is no exception. While it may appear at times that a vocal majority of opinion is the only view that is held, this is not always the case." Bradshaw's directive struck a chord with FGCU employees. The Staff Advisory Council received 44 anonymous comments on the issue; all were against the ban on holiday decorations. "It says people are very passionate about this," said council president Ruth Rodrigues, who also is director of auxiliary services. "The holidays are a joyous time, and they want to express themselves." The council voted Monday to send administration a letter outlining employees' comments. In Bradshaw's memo, he said the decision was not an "attempt to suppress expression of the holiday spirit." Staffers will be permitted to display holiday decorations on their desks, but not on their office doors or in common spaces. Traditional workplace Christmas parties are not an issue at FGCU. "We don't generally have Christmas parties here," said Audrea Anderson, associate vice president for community relations and marketing. "There are end-of-the-semester parties or end-of-the-calendar-year parties. They are certainly not related to anyone's beliefs." Bradshaw plans to convene a committee in 2009 to address future methods of sharing traditions throughout the year. In 2001, then-President William Merwin lit the university's official Christmas tree, a 22-foot Colorado blue spruce. Children from the college's child care center and university choir performed traditional carols. Junior Marilyn Lerner, a 20-year-old resort and hospitality management major from California, said she'll miss seeing Christmas trees in the Student Union. "I think they're pretty," said Lerner, who is Jewish. "It's just a Christmas tree. I don't mind." Neither does junior Stephanie Tirado, 20, an education major from New York. "Christmas is no longer just a religious holiday. It's commercialized now," said Tirado, who is Wiccan. "Why don't they just add a menorah then?" ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? |
