The the second amendment as it is literally worded may not still effective for its original intended purpose in today’s world. The right to bear arms was originally made for the purpose of defense of ones homestead and farm in event of tyrannical government.

I knew someone who relied on the second amendment, so to speak. The police were investigating a vandalism incident in my neighborhood. They saw an old veteran with a firearm going for a walk nearby, and began interrogating him with a series of questions. They identified him as a suspect and closed in to prepare to arrest him. He consider them tyrannical and pointed his gun at them, then backed away, went into his house, and barricaded himself in there for 3 days until he ran out of supplies and sleep. The second amendment did not work in the end. There were too many military reinforcements.

Today only farmers and a few others own land they could live independently off of. Up to a limited capacity, people could live nomadically off the forage of public lands, however, this drifting lifestyle does not inspire much need for protection of capital, except for the collective defense of unsubdued wilderness.

What principle represents the second amendment as it pertains to you?

I feel I have a right to protect myself.. where I live there is no "cop shop" in my town, only county sheriff that patrols over a 650 mile area. In the event an occurrence arose at my home, how "many minutes" am I expected to wait to be rescued or saved? It is a pretty well known fact, that most times officiers are not able to arrive in time .. mainly just arrive in time for clean up, and to try and figure out what happened. So home and self protection.. but of course anything else that may arise also..

We haven't got it, and I'd be totally against it.
If you have to live in a country where people don't trust one another or the government then something is seriously askew with that country and should be addressed asap.
I wouldn't want to live in a country where people -incl me- cannot / do not feel safe and secure.
Apart from that, it instigates aggression and violence.
Look at the OP story. It's totally insane that a civilian should point a fire arm at officers of the law!
If he hadn't been out with the fire arm there wouldn't have been a problem either.

But if this is to change then everyone has to change too. The law officers who do whatever the bleep they like because they simply get away with it... that sort of chit shouldn't be possible.
And I know this is not just in the movies, but happens in RL too.
I know from someone who lived there, and also... if it was nonsense it wouldn't be in movies. People would scream bloody murder to have their country portrayed that way if it wasn't true.

The ONLY reason I can think of to hold a fire arm is when you have to get out in nature or go hiking, for protection against dangerous animals.
But then, there is another solution possible for that. You don't need to own your own fire arms for such things.
My ex son in law had 3 rifles and 1 or 2 hand guns. And I suspect he was going to get more in the future. Isn't that insane?

Yes it was fun to go shooting at the range and that I could check that box. But I really wouldn't like the idea of my neighbour -and anyone- to have fire arms. What if they're in a bad mood?
"I don't like Mondays. I just wanna shoot"
I don;t think there's any other country where there's so much violence and killing with fire arms as the US.
That is food for thought.

There are no reasons I can think of to own a car when there are many ways to safely travel. There are so many solutions possible for travel. You don't need to own your own car for such things.

Governments around the world should take away all the cars away, because there are no grown azz adults responsible enough to own them
That is food for thought.

Back in the 18th century is was probably logical that somebody, or several people, with muskets could stand off a tyrannical government, of a mostly rural area, also armed with muskets. In todays' world the amount of available firepower carried by even a small group of government agents would shortly overwhelm even the most ardent wanna-be revolutionists. The idea of a popular uprising is ludicrous.

I never knew it was invented to use against a tyrannical government, which in itself is nuts to me. If a government would be tyrannical it shouldn't even be there.
I always thought it had to do with many countries having colonies, Indians, Mexican gangs etc etc.
And later on became a thing for government as people aren't trusting.

In any case, I'd want it to go, which would mean of course that safety should be guaranteed for citizens.

I don't see how breaking the law should be compared to a law that's nuts. But alas.

Breaking the law?

Are you saying every life taken by car is the result of the law being broken?

US Car deaths in 2018 = 36,560
US Gun deaths in 2018 = 39,740

Since we want to blame the means of the death, I think it would be easier to get rid of the cars, since there is no right to own a car. Those are just the deaths too - look how many cars paralyze and maim.

Those evil evil cars and car owners should have their cars taken away - in the name of safety

The 2nd Amendment gives Us, the Citizens, the Right to Own All the Same Guns/Weapons as the Government does. People forget that part. Whatever they want to use against Us.. We have the Right to Own and Use Against Them!

What principle represents the second amendment as it pertains to you?

The right to bear arms doesn't mean you must.
It means you have the choice to if you so desire.
It gives citizens a sense of "Freedom".

If you think about it all rights "give permission".
Many governments in the world do not afford its citizens blanket rights like here in the States. Only a select few are given permissions. Permissions which can and often are revoked with a new regime.
In the States, our rights are protected for all citizens no matter who might be in office. If not, they are in violation of our national doctrine and can be held accountable by the laws of this nation.

The fact our constitutional rights can be challenged is proof our system of government is failing. Its BROKEN.

My family owns over 140,000 acres of ranch land. NOT farm, ranch.
If you don't think guns are needed you're very mistaken!

There is no public transit, yes we have horses but a handful of people can not cover the ground needed on horseback. Not to mention the transport of supplies and the finished product, cattle (that's where beef comes from).

If the day comes when things break down, I can survive. I can feed myself and my people when the supermarket has already been looted.

Can you?

When you're sitting in your apartment, the police are overwhelmed and the crips, bloods, MS13 or whatever maggots are about to break your door down, what will you do then?

It's fine for all of you that have never been without police to call and the corner market to supply your food to spout some of the nonsense that's already posted on this thread but your comfortable environment is not reality for everyone. The day may come when it's not for you either.

No! Too many people have fought and died to uphold our constitution to have it die at the hands of clueless people.

I suspect the second amendment is about something more important than just bearing arms, but more about tyranny in the government, whatever that looks like. Could America lose the second amendment in a backhanded way by modernization?

I am not against keeping and bearing guns.

But what is the Best way one can protect against tyranny?

The southern states tried to succeed from the union in the Civil War, and that did not work either. Although it’s sort of worked. The confederacy still sort of exist in some places.
