I drive, but I don't want to, but I have to drive, I mean, I'd like someone else to drive. I am the responsible one for driving, or I stay over. One drink limit any more for not driving. I'm sure we all have stories from the good ole days, hehe

Why would one stop driving around 55???
I only would for medical reasons.

Over here people get medical tests after they're 75 which includes an eyetest and check for overall fitness to drive.
Normally you get 10 years extension but not anymore when you're elderly, then it's 5 years.
To be honest, that's not enough. Should be annual testing. Some are fine, but others are a danger on the road.

Here in the UK, at the age of 70 you have to complete a form which lists a number of medical conditions and you only have to say yes or no if you suffer from any of them. Nothing to stop anyone from no to them all, but I expect your insurance would not be valid if you are dishonest.

I do believe the driving test should be repeated every ten years up to the age of 70 and then every five years after that. The test would be slightly different as you get older with more emphasis placed on eyesight, reaction time and knowledge of the latest road rules.

I'll know more next year when I turn 70 and have to complete my first medical form. waving

No car= no date, sorry but not sorry call me sexist I've been called worse. I always drive my own car to wherever I'm meeting someone for a first date. I have dated men who thought I was their uber driver, no more of that. And when a man tells me he don't drive my mind automatically goes to uhhhhhh why not? DUI? Suspended? To feeble?

I Agree. Why would someone stop driving at 55yrs old, unless it was for a medical problem or some other issue?
The person who posted this topic must be very young, lol.

I'm not allowed to drive because of my glaucoma and it does make dating that little bit more difficult than it needs to be happy I walk, take the bus, occasionally take a taxi or get a lift from family (not for dating in this last case, that might be more embarrassing than I could cope with on the return journey laugh )

What about people in their 80's and 90's still driving. Should I be worried?

Way too many elderly people shouldn't be driving, but they do for various reasons.

1. No mass transit is available where they live, but they still need to go to medical appointments and to grocery stores.

2. They won't admit that they aren't as physically and mentally capable of driving safely as they used to be.

3. There is no legal way to prevent them from driving.

4. They have the public support of other senior citizens who also deny the reality that way too many elderly people shouldn't be driving.

Perhaps if the rest of this crazy world slowed down a bit in the quests to go nowhere in a hurry all the time, we could ALL make use of , and enjoy this planet...

In the UK. The driving licence is valid up to the age of 65 then needs to be renewed every 3 years. The licence renewal form includes many questions regarding your eyesight and general health, and if all is well the licence is renewed for 3 years. I believe most people know whether or not they are safe to drive, and those with medical conditions are advised by their doctor whether they are fit to drive, sadly some people ignore the signs and advice. If you drive anything larger than a car or motorcycle, (eg RV, Minibus, 3.5 ton truck), eyesight and medical cerificates are required after the age of 70, paid for by the applicant. I'm 71 and drive my own car.

I drive every day, don't have any problem doing so. Texas has very little public transportation, it would be very difficult to get by without driving.

The Extinction Rebellion movement wants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2025. Scientifically, this is impossible to do, which for me reduces the credibility of their argument. Even if we ALL gave up owning a car, and we ALL became Vegan and ALL production of oil, gas and coal was stopped by the end of this year, that would still not be enough to achieve their aim.

In general I agree with the idea that we should do as much as we can to reduce global warming, but I will not give up my car until there are regular bus routes that go to all the places I need to go in my car. When I am much older I will likely give up the car, go without many of the pleasures I now enjoy and walk everywhere, accepting that food and other things can be delieved direct to my house.

But not yet!

At 72 I still drive a lot of miles. I have gotten to where I limit my long distance trips to under 12 hours a day; usually 600 - 700 miles. I'm not fond of some of the big cities but still have to go through them. I think Dallas is the worst one I usually go through.
