Wouldn't have much of a life without one.

Public transport doesn't like:
Dirt bikes, guns, fishing gear, boats, trailers, heavy camping gear, canoes, surfboards, large models, loud music, alcohol etc.,

And they hardly ever go where I want to: desert, rivers, shooting range, surf beaches, national parks, and quiet unspoilt people free places.

And I wouldn't be able to get to as many meeting places to be left waiting and stood up. tears

There will need to be major changes to public transit if it is ever to be useful to most of us. I find the biggest challenge is trying to figure out how to get from point A to point B. A decent transit system should provide an APP where you enter where you are and where you want to go. The APP should give you your route/routes and time required.

Here in England the bus companies (sometimes) have such an app. But it isn't integrated with other bus companies or the trains, it can only tell you how to get from A to B along the routes that particular company travels.

Maybe by the time I'm too old to be able to use a bus, or remember what it is for, such an app will be available for whatever technology will replace the cell phone.

Yes, at 65 I still drive. This post gave me pause as I hadn't even thought about a time I might not be able to.

My little soft top kit car is out this week as we are lucky here in England and have warm sun - at least till the weekend when it will rain!

I switched to driving a horse and cart when I discovered how much more wine I could haul.

I was just thinking the same thing that greenerpastures said. 60 is not old. What about people in their 80's and 90's still driving. Should I be worried?

Way too many elderly people shouldn't be driving, but they do for various reasons.

1. No mass transit is available where they live, but they still need to go to medical appointments and to grocery stores.

2. They won't admit that they aren't as physically and mentally capable of driving safely as they used to be.

3. There is no legal way to prevent them from driving.

4. They have the public support of other senior citizens who also deny the reality that way too many elderly people shouldn't be driving.

Some 80+ people are still very capable of driving while others are not. It is up to each stat how they want to approach the problem. Possible ideas:
1. Limited speed and distance licenses
2. Regular skills retest
3. Medical certification including cognitive and vision testing
4. Vehicle labels : CAUTION - senior driver

I think the biggest issues are with high speed freeway driving and new roadway design features/changes. We need to realize how impossible it is to live in many areas without the ability to drive. Giving up driving almost requires living in some type of assisted living environment.

My father drives. He lives with me some of the year. He lives with my sister some of the year. Trying to figure out what to do.

At the age of 91 my Father gave me his car keys. His main problem is that he was quite a slow driver. 28mph in a 30 zone was fine for him but not for the other drivers around him. He did have plans to drive to interesting places but had to give up those plans.

I quite like the idea of a test every ten years. I passed mine in 1968 and a lot has changed since then, but the law assumes I am up to date with all the changes. The test would depend on your age, with more emphasis on response times and eyesight as you get older.

But would I pass now? Possibly not! Gulp!

I still drive, far too young to consider giving it up. Dad gave me the keys to his car when he was 91, I'm not yet 70.

I get to choose the soft top two seater sports car in this weather, or the 'sensible' car if have to give people a lift or if the weather isn't so good. Lucky me!
