Roy Costner IV, a former public school student from South Carolina, stunned the audience at his
high school graduation last weekend when he ripped up his previously-approved valedictorian speech going on, instead, to speak about God — and then deliver the Lord's prayer. The act, which drew loud applause, was taken in opposition to the School District of Pickens County's decision to axe prayers from graduation events, Christian News reports. Officials said that they had recently received complaints from atheist activists and church-state separatists, leading to the removal of invocations from all school events. But that didn't stop Costner. Ive never understood why a valedictorian cannot speak from their own personal heart,, so long as they dont personally attack any person or groups,,,
but rules are rules,, so , I commend the young man for being willing to accept the potential consequences in taking this risk we commend people for 'coming out' about their sexual preferences,, nice to see someone come on out for their moral preferences,,,,and not be condemned,,, |

I don't care if someone prays, as long as they're not trying to force me to join in. But, what do you guys get from pushing your prayers on others? Why is it so important that you're able to pray in front of big groups of people like this? What do you lose out on when you make religion and prayer a personal thing, rather than trying to force others to accept it as well?

I don't care if someone prays, as long as they're not trying to force me to join in. But, what do you guys get from pushing your prayers on others? its just a freedom of expression,, I suppose we dont loose anything more by choosing to keep it personal
but thank goodness it is as much our choice to do so as it is our choice to keep our sexual preference personal,,,,some may want to aknowledge their love of their spouse or their love of their partner and why not their love of God,,,? |

Can someone please explain the need to be able to pray in public in front of others? We encourage others. We are praying for and with one another, to our Creator. In one accord, we acknowledge that we stand in His Divine Presence. We give Him the Glory and Honor that He is due. We ask His Blessing & protection and wisdom for all our affairs. We agree together by saying "Amen". We often say... "In Jesus' Name, Amen". We believe His death on the cross paid the penalty for our sin and gave us access to His Throne of Mercy & Grace. He said that if we ask anything in His Name the Father will grant it. Jesus said when two or more are gathered in His name He is there in the midst of us. We remind one another of His encouraging Words... That He will never leave us nor forsake us. [[[Open prayer can be compared to a presidential innaugural address. The prez declares what he can and will do for us. After his address, those of the crowd agree or not... but respect is given throughout the ceremony. There is a round of applaud by many but not all]]] We stand before our Eternal, Heavenly King to recount His promises toward us as well. Unbelievers may also be at the gathering. Thus, all will not say "Amen". |

Can someone please explain the need to be able to pray in public in front of others? already did, its an expression of love of God,, just like publicly expressing love for anyone else not a 'need', but a 'choice' all should have,,, ,, ceris put it quite beautifully,,,, |

just like publicly expressing love for anyone else harmony: how is publicly expressing love for a human a NEED? There's TONS of individuals (including myself) who aren't afforded that opportunity. I don't see how it's a NEED.... |

just like publicly expressing love for anyone else harmony: how is publicly expressing love for a human a NEED? There's TONS of individuals (including myself) who aren't afforded that opportunity. I don't see how it's a NEED.... needs are water, shelter, food, and rest there are no other true 'needs' the question about why this is a 'need' is a loaded question , as it is not a need and the point is not being a need its being a CHOICE like, I dont NEED to sit at the front of the bus,, but I should be afforded the CHOICE To do so |

I dont think its trying to encourage, its just expressing something in common like saying the pledge of allegiance,, or having a moment of silence for a recently deceased person, those who are likeminded wont need encouragement when they hear it,, they will just choose to join in,,,, |
