Angel Heart

Follows the exploits of Harry Angel, a New York detective hired by a mysterious client to track down a once-popular performer indebted to him. While pursuing this seemingly routine investigation, Harry encounters dark and supernatural forces.

CATEGORY: Supernatural
CURRENT STATUS: In Development
PRODUCED BY: Gaeta / Rosenzweig Films/Michael De Luca Productions
WRITTEN BY: William Hjortsberg (Novel)

This is still in the very early stages of development. The remake rights have been purchased and it may be a while before things move forward for the project, especially since a script hasn't even been written. Also based on the novel Falling Angel by William Hjortsberg.
The original film starred Mickey Rourke, Robert De Niro and Lisa Bonet, and was criticized for its explicit sex scenes, which received cuts to avoid an X-rating. This is the obvious remake of the 1987 film with the same name.

Atrocious

In April 4th of 2010, Quintanilla family was found murdered in their country side house. Police reported the existence of 37 hours of recorded evidence. (Kind of reminds you of Paranormal Activity, doesn't it?) "Atrocious" shows the real images of such evidence. The Quintanilla family traveled to their old farm house in Sitges, where Christian and July investigated about the Legend of the Girl in the Garraf woods. Both of them recorded everything they did the whole time.

On the fifth day of their arrival, they were found dead under strange circumstances. The film shows the last five days of the life of Cristian Quintanilla and his siblings. It also shows the strange situations that they lived in during those moments that still remains unexplained.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark is Hitting Theaters This Summer!

Scramble for your calendar and mark down August 12 as FilmDistrict and Miramax today announced that FilmDistrict has acquired all U.S. rights to Don't Be Afraid of the Dark and that a wide release has been scheduled for said date!!

The film was originally set for January 21, 2011 but the release was put on hold due to Disney selling Miramax.

Produced by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Johnson, the film stars Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, Bailee Madison and Jack Thompson and marks the directorial debut of Troy Nixey.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark is a remake of a 1973 TV movie bearing the same title, considered by del Toro to be among the scariest ever made. The film was co-written by Del Toro and Matthew Robbins.

"The film follows Sally (Bailee Madison), a young girl who moves to Rhode Island to live with her father (Guy Pearce) and his new girlfriend (Katie Holmes) in the 19th-century mansion they are restoring.

Having stumbled upon the mansion’s hidden basement, Sally starts hearing voices calling out from the bolted ash pit, imploring her to open it. Sally obliges and unwittingly unleashes something so terrible, so unthinkable, that everyone’s life – hers most of all - is placed in immediate and grave danger."

Honestly I don't count Zombie Flicks in the same place as horror. Although they are still horror, they are a different animal.

For the sake of this discussion, I assumed you meant specifically slasher flicks because more supernatural threats often sway away from weapons and just use their powers.

I agree with you there, although the lack of air (strangulation or drowning) is a terrifying way to go, it doesn't translate well on the big screen. As horror fans we like the gore and choking someone simply lacks the brutal splatter we've come to expect.

Unless the killer is strangling the victim so hard their eyes pop outbigsmile

I thought the bath tub scene in the I Spit On Your Grave remake was quite nice. Granted that he actually died because of the lye and not from actual drowning, but he was technically headed in that direction... bigsmile

As much as I love the original Sleepaway Camp, that drowning scene under the canoe was silly, when his hand comes up as he's being strangled he looks like he's waving goodbye.

Recently acquired 2 Laymon books I haven't read before-

"In an isolated corner of a deserted hotel, horror writer Larry Dunbar uncovers a grisly relic. It's naked. It's female. And it has a wooden stake through its heart.
She was a young innocent high school senior named Bonnie Saxon...sacrificed on the altar of a madman's obsession to rid the earth of its most ancient, pitiless evil: The curse of the vampire.

A world of horrors was born the day the stake was driven in. Now Larry Dunbar wants to pull it out."

"In 1888, Following a disturbance at home, Trevor Bentley's mother sends the 15-year-old to find his uncle, a constable on the London police force. Trevor embarks on a bizarre sequence of adventures, beginning with his witnessing Jack the Ripper at work. Over the next few months, the Ripper and Trevor pursue each other across the Atlantic and on to Arizona, sometimes exchanging roles of hunter and the hunted."

Indie Sequel to 1959 'Killer Shrews'!

The official website has launched for the crazy awesome looking Return of the Killer Shrews starring John Schneider, James Best, Rick Hurst, Jennifer Lyons and Mel Tillis.

The site will be the main source of new information regarding the new sequel to this cult classic film from 1959!

"A TV Reality Show hires CAPTAIN THORNE SHERMAN (James Best) and his boat to cargo supplies to the deserted offshore island they're using as a filming location. Thorne would have normally refused the job because he's been to that island before and stills sees it in his nightmares. Unfortunately, he needs the money and he's not getting much business these days. Together with his first mate ROOK (Rick Hurst), they sail - to a place Thorne Sherman never wanted to see again as long as he lived; the island of the KILLER SHREWS.

As the TV crew and two-fisted animal expert JOHNNY RENO (John Schneider) shoot their reality show, some of the cast and crew go missing, attacked and eaten in a bloody feeding frenzy by strange creatures. But tough as nails Producer STELLA, sleazy Director WILLARD and manipulative Writer LENORA couldn't care less about the human cost. They are ruthlessly focused on getting their show in the can, regardless of the body count. Only cute young camera operator MICKEY (Jennifer Lyons) and her on-again off-again boyfriend SAM grow concerned about their vanished friends. And Captain Thorne grows uneasy. Only he knows that the island holds hidden danger. Only he knows why people are dying. Once again, the place is crawling with giant Killer Shrews, the result of a 50 year old experiment gone terribly wrong. And time is running out to get off the island before they all turn into bloody Shrew bait."

The Haunted House Project (2010)

Even more than a decade after The Blair Witch Project made the "found footage" sub-genre immensely popular, there are still films out there hoping to copy its success, especially recently with Paranormal Activity, which has sparked interest in the theme once again. Better late than never (in this case never), Korea decides to jump on the bandwagon and release The Haunted House Project (aka Deserted House), which displays edited found footage of a television crew and a few enthusiastic ghost hunters, as they explore a supposedly incredibly haunted home.

Normally I have faith in South Korea's genre efforts, as their horror usually proves to be (at minimum) a decent watch, however this flick showed very little of the quality I'm normally used to coming from the country, as it's very formulaic and offers next-to-nil in terms of creativity or even scares. It's unfortunate since the location itself is actually rather creepy. A majority of the movie simply depicts the crew as they slowly walk around the property and home, exploring and using cheap "ghost hunting equipment" hoping to catch something of the supernatural.

Those expecting much for the first hour-or-so, will be sorely disappointed, as there's really not a whole lot offered. Aside from your standard stuff -- a mirror breaking, strange noises, and camera equipment failing. Of course, given the fact that there's very little lighting, there are a couple somewhat creepy parts, namely one brief scene displaying bright lit eyes from a distance within a dark area of the house. I also enjoyed SOME of the exploring of the home, specifically due to the fact that we're primarily following through the point of view of whoever's holding the camera, so you can sometimes feel a bit submersed in the eerie environment.

As usual with these types of flicks, the action picks up in the last 20-or-so minutes, as we watch these characters run around frantically with (and sometimes without) a camera in-hand. This obviously causes some confusion for the viewer since we're forced to keep up with whatever's happening to these characters. Once the final credits roll you'll feel a little cheated, not just due to the fairly standard climax, but also once you realize how much lost potential the flick had. The location was right, the lighting was right, the characters were decent, but unfortunately that's where it all ended.

Is this a record for longest gap between sequels? And an actor reprising a role?

Of course the granddaddy of found-footage horror is Cannibal Holocaust. The Last Broadcast which it's still being debated whether it came before Blair Witch or not is pretty decent, it's just the ending didn't work for me. I really liked The St. Francisville Experiment- I think they based it on a real New Orleans legend, besides the cheat of having a couple of cliche scares, I thought it was well done. Then there's Strawberry Estates, now I love the title, and it did have potential, but the director Ron Bonk is a quack, he claims to have filmed a version years before Blair Witch, but for whatever reason re filmed it after Blair Witch came out...yeah, who ya foolin', Ron?

What Horror Movie(s) Scared You The Most As A Child?

For me the ones that got me the most were-

Race With The Devil- not the whole movie, but the ending, they used to air it on TV all the time back in the early 80's. I can remember turning it on towards the end just to see that ending. I still love the film, and the ending is still very effective.

Salem's Lot The 1970's Tobe Hooper directed TV miniseries. I was sitting on the floor in the basement watching TV when it originally aired, the scene when Danny Glick shows up at Mark Petrie's window.

Trilogy Of Terror The Zuni Fetish Warrior sequence.

Beyond The Door Italian The Exorcist rip-off with Juliet Mills. It was airing on TV Halloween night, creeped the hell out of me.

Don't Go To Sleep Watched it when it premiered on TV. The pizza cutter sequence, I couldn't find a clip. But the evil girl is running the pizza cutter along the wall up the stairs slowly as she heads towards the mother.

What Horror Movie(s) Scared You The Most As A Child?

The first movie to ever give me nightmares was Alligator (1980).

A baby alligator is flushed down the toilet, but years of eating a genetics lab's leftovers turns the lovable pet into a giant man-eating beast that breaks free from its subterranean home to tear through downtown Chicago! The urban legend of alligators in the sewers comes to life in this clever creature feature from 1980. Robert Forster stars as David Madison, a streetwise detective who must team up with a lead herpetologist in order to trap the mutant gator before it attacks again. ALLIGATOR uses all of the same devices as JAWS and the other killer animal films of its time, but it does so with its tongue placed firmly in cheek thanks to another sharp script by PIRANHA's John Sayles. It features some astounding special effects and miniature work that are unusual for a film of its size. Ramon is the most convincing giant gator costume in the genre, even beating out more recent additions like ROGUE and LAKE PLACID (as a bit of trivia, Horror fav Kane Hodder played the mechanical gator in an uncredited role). Mother nature gets her revenge when Ramon sets his sights on a dinner party that is being held by his ungodly creators. More than anything, the quality of this B-movie is elevated by Lewis Teague's impressive direction, which gives the film a polished appearance. He also takes the opportunity to sneak in several apparent nods to JAWS and other pop-culture references along the way. When it comes to giant gators, ALLIGATOR is king.

I watched this as a kid and I never forgot it. It gave me the creeps for the longest time. This was the sister with no mouth briefly glimpsed in the kid with eerie powers segment of Twilight Zone.

Well, IMO, the coolest weapon used in a horror flick is either Ash's chainsaw (Evil Dead, Army of Darkness), or that weaponized vehicle Ash built in Army Of Darkness to slay the army of Deadites. JMHO. :)

I love Alligator! It's one of my favorite "animal attacks/nature gone bad" flicks. The effects do indeed hold up well. Too bad the sequel was so bad.

I remember seeing the Twilight Zone Movie at the theater when it was released, that image was definitely creepy. The actress was none other than Nancy Cartwright aka Bart Simpson.
