Now Hiring: 'Pet Sematary' Gatekeeper

What a crazy busy news day! It's been almost exactly 7 years since Paramount announced plans to remake Mary Lambert's 1989 Stephen King adaptation Pet Sematary, while the last time we heard of any developments was back in July.

Fresh news courtesy of the LA Times who report that Matthew Greenberg, the writer of 1408 (also based on a King work), is set to turn in his script for a new version of the tale. And executives at studio Paramount have put out the word to at least two representatives in the agent community that they are seeking a high-level director to tackle the material.

The original, which starred Fred Gwynne, told of a zombie-raising pet cemetery that afflicts a family that's just moved to small-town Maine. Events unfold with a mix of death (both animal and human), resurrections and creepy Gothic spaces. (Mary Lambert's movie also spawned a poorly received sequel in 1992.)

Oh, I loved this! Both the novel and the movie!

I guess it's not that big a surprise that they're planning to resurrect their plans of a remake since zombies are fast becoming a fad for horror fans these days. A lot of producers would want to cash in on that.

Who could possibly top Fred Gwynne's performance?

I know! He's going to be a hard act to follow. Loved him as Herman! You know, as big as he was, he loved theater and I think he sang professionally as well as wrote some children's books.

Anyhoo, do you have any idea if they already have potential casts for the main roles?

I haven't heard anything on casting yet, but if I do I'll post it here:smile:

There's also rumors of a theatrical adaptation of It in the works- I hope this turns out well...I found the miniseries very underwhelming, and all the people the praise seem to be able to only find one good thing about it- Tim Curry, and take him out of the miniseries you would have nothing.

It the miniseries had to cut too much out because of TV, budget, and effects constraints.

There's now also rumors of a theatrical version of The Stand. I enjoy the miniseries version, though Randall Flagg could have been better cast. Originally George Romero was going to do a theatrical adaptation back in the 80's, also he was originally going to be the director of Pet Sematary.

Theatrical versions, huh? I am a fan of theater and it would be interesting to see how they go about this.

Suburbia in Trouble: 'Zombies Ate My Neighbors' Getting Big Screen Treatment!

I remember my brother hogging the SNES because he was deeply involved in "Zombies Ate My Neighbors," a sci-fi zombie game that takes place in suburbia where two best friends amongst a sea of teenage angst battle for safety against the mysterious uprising of neighborhood zombies.

First Showing is reporting that a live-action adaptation is currently seeking financing and that a screenplay by John Darko is already completed. Darko is producing with April Wade and Ahmed al Baker. This is currently in the works as an independent production and they're still securing rights, so maybe this news is a bit premature? Still, if the hype gets the movie made I'm all for it.

I don't remember this. But I do hope they push through with the project.

A new flick called The Returned is now on tap for Carballo and Filmax. Penned by Hatem Khraiche Ruiz-Zorrilla, "Kate works at the hospital in the Return Unit, helping those who have been infected by the virus that turns people into zombies. Even Kate’s own husband, Jack, has returned."

First Bloody Look at Now-Filming 'Hamiltons' Sequel 'Thompsons'!

Film Harvest and Snowfort Pictures announced today that filming is finally underway on The Butcher Brothers' The Thompsons, their vampire sequel to the indie smash The Hamiltons (cute title, right?)

"In the sequel, a bloodbath at a gas station in the desert puts the family on the run, eventually seeing them resurface in the U.K. under a new identity as “The Thompsons.” Desperate for protection in this unfamiliar country, the Thompsons seek out the help of a shadowy underground rumored to be sympathetic to vampires."

The original cast are reprising their roles, with Cory Knauf, Samuel Childs, Mackenzie Firgens and Joseph McKelheer being joined by newcomer Ryan Hartwig as the youngest sibling “Lenny.” The film is being produced by Film Harvest’s Eben Kostbar and Joe McKelheer and Snowfort Pictures’ Travis Stevens (A Horrible Way to Die). The script was written by The Butcher Brothers and Cory Knauf.

If they did it right it could be like a The Goonies/Monster Squad type movie.

I never did watch The Hamiltons, I know it was part of the 8 Films To Die For fest. It was directed by The Butcher Brothers who also did the horrendously bad April Fool's Day remake.

What about that upcoming Zombie flick they're making? The Returned? Some are complaining about the choice for director.

I haven't seen the director's work so I'm not sure. One of his films La posesión de Emma Evans sounds like yet another The Exorcist/The Exorcism of Emily Rose clone, so I'll pass.

Can't say I like the title- The Returned, sounds almost as bad as the title for another horror flick The Disappeared.

I've started reading Robert Englund's autobiography Hollywood Monster...He became friends with Mark Hamill before Mark went on to Star Wars, I knew Mark is a big scifi and comic book geek, but I now learned he was a huge horror film geek. Mark introduced Robert to horror films he wasn't aware of.

Robert's worked with some amazing actors, and was friends with many in his youth...in his teens he was friends with the kid who always played Tommy Kirk's little bro in the Disney films.

He didn't name them, darn it! Robert just said Mark introduced him to little-known horror and scifi films.

Knife is a very VERY common weapon. Melee weapons make good Horror weapons for both heroes and the Villain. The Villain's weapon should be something visceral. I always felt it was disappointing when the villain uses a gun, especially when the director thinks that would be more scary. No, it needs to be brutal, a gun is too quick and not nearly gory enough. It's not scary. It's a better idea to let the hero have a gun, but that's still not the best idea... Oh, I'm rambling again... sorry.

So yeah, knife.

WARNING! CONTAINS SPOILERS

There's only a few times I've seen guns used effectively(not counting zombie flicks), the 2 that stand out the most is the infamous shotgun scene in Maniac '80, where the killer jumps on the hood of the car where a couple are making out and shoots Tom Savini himself at point blank range. The other being at the end of the early 80's slasher The Prowler where the killer gets his head blown off at point blank range. Both of these moments were created by Tom Savini, and he never skimped on the gore.

I also can't stand when strangling or drowning is used(unless the water is boiling), though I admit I do like the sleaze fest Don't Answer The Phone where the killer is a strangler, but that's a rarity.

Honestly I don't count Zombie Flicks in the same place as horror. Although they are still horror, they are a different animal.

For the sake of this discussion, I assumed you meant specifically slasher flicks because more supernatural threats often sway away from weapons and just use their powers.

I agree with you there, although the lack of air (strangulation or drowning) is a terrifying way to go, it doesn't translate well on the big screen. As horror fans we like the gore and choking someone simply lacks the brutal splatter we've come to expect.

I thought the bath tub scene in the I Spit On Your Grave remake was quite nice. Granted that he actually died because of the lye and not from actual drowning, but he was technically headed in that direction... bigsmile
