Now Hiring: 'Pet Sematary' Gatekeeper

What a crazy busy news day! It's been almost exactly 7 years since Paramount announced plans to remake Mary Lambert's 1989 Stephen King adaptation Pet Sematary, while the last time we heard of any developments was back in July.

Fresh news courtesy of the LA Times who report that Matthew Greenberg, the writer of 1408 (also based on a King work), is set to turn in his script for a new version of the tale. And executives at studio Paramount have put out the word to at least two representatives in the agent community that they are seeking a high-level director to tackle the material.

The original, which starred Fred Gwynne, told of a zombie-raising pet cemetery that afflicts a family that's just moved to small-town Maine. Events unfold with a mix of death (both animal and human), resurrections and creepy Gothic spaces. (Mary Lambert's movie also spawned a poorly received sequel in 1992.)

Oh, I loved this! Both the novel and the movie!

I guess it's not that big a surprise that they're planning to resurrect their plans of a remake since zombies are fast becoming a fad for horror fans these days. A lot of producers would want to cash in on that.

Who could possibly top Fred Gwynne's performance?

I know! He's going to be a hard act to follow. Loved him as Herman! You know, as big as he was, he loved theater and I think he sang professionally as well as wrote some children's books.

Anyhoo, do you have any idea if they already have potential casts for the main roles?

Oh, and have you heard about the ruckus regarding the writers of TWD and that they're postponing showing it 'til October, I think? Someone started a thread about it, actually, but you may not have seen it.

I haven't heard anything on casting yet, but if I do I'll post it here:smile:

There's also rumors of a theatrical adaptation of It in the works- I hope this turns out well...I found the miniseries very underwhelming, and all the people the praise seem to be able to only find one good thing about it- Tim Curry, and take him out of the miniseries you would have nothing.

It the miniseries had to cut too much out because of TV, budget, and effects constraints.

There's now also rumors of a theatrical version of The Stand. I enjoy the miniseries version, though Randall Flagg could have been better cast. Originally George Romero was going to do a theatrical adaptation back in the 80's, also he was originally going to be the director of Pet Sematary.

I didn't see the post, but I did hear about it:smile: ....not a good sign. Wait too long between seasons you lose viewership, that happened with 4400, even for me, by the time it came back I had lost interest in it.

It almost happened for me again with Primeval, I had actually written the show off as not coming back.

In my opinion -

Evil Dead
Evil Dead 2
and
Army of Darkness

are the best of any trilogy ever made. I love Bruce Campbell.

There hasn't been much I have seen him in that I haven't liked.

Wasn't Evil Dead a college project? or is that just a rumor I heard?

Let Me In- This movie surprised me. Yeah, it is about a young girl who is a vampire. But I love the relationship that develops between Owen and Abby. It's so "first love" and even when Owen finds out Abby is a vampire, he still can't not help caring for her. And she can't help caring for him. I wouldn't consider this a "horror" film, but I guess it is. Only problem I had with this film is that it can drag. However, those moments are rare. What I like best is watching the relationship between Owen and Abby grow. Even at the end, you can see how much Owen cares for and loves Abby. And vice versa.

Let Me In is one of my favorite movies ever! But it's actually a remake and is based on the 2008 Swedish film Let the Right One In (Låt den rätte komma in), directed by Tomas Alfredson, and the novel of the same name by John Ajvide Lindqvist.

In my honest opinion, those two kids can give Bella and Edward a lesson or two about vampire love and devotion.

I knew it was based off a novel and a foreign film. I haven't read the book or seen the original. But this one captivated me. I love how when Abby kills the Policeman and Owen just closes the door. She then comes out and just hugs him. She's all covered in blood, but you can tell he just doesn't care what she is. It's the fact that he believes she isn't evil and he loves her. And she won't hurt him because she loves him and she trusts him. Might be considered a "messed up" version of love, but that is what it is.

I think it's taking acceptance and devotion to a different level. The thing about those two characters is that no matter what discoveries they made of each other, they still appear to be so innocent. I think that is an enormous part of their appeal to the audiences.

Tomas Alfredson, the director of the Swedish film, was initially asked to direct the remake, but he turned it down because he said he's too old to make the same film twice. He was actually against it, since in his opinion, only bad movies should have another version and his movie is not bad. He believes remakes are there to correct the mistakes of the original movie. The writer Lindqvist, on the other hand, said that Reeves told him that he will make a new film based on the book, and not remake the Swedish film. :)

There's a new movie, Outcast, which I watched recently that seemed to base their story on this movie. But though the attempt at being different was apparent, the content was dreadful.

No, Sam Raimi and his long time producer friend Rob Tapert did meet in college and made short films while there, but Evil Dead they made on their own- Sam or Bruce or both dropped out before it went into production.

I think in the case of remakes of foreign films- studios think most American audiences don't want to read subtitles, and they want Americanized movies, so they remake them.

Anton Yelchin Set for Koontz Adaptation 'Odd Thomas'

Just in time for EFM, with Stephen Sommers (The Mummy, Van Helsing, Deep Rising) signed on to direct an adaptation of Dean Koontz's popular Odd Thomas book series, Bloody Disgusting learned that Anton Yelchin (Terminator: Salvation, Fright Night) has been attached to star.

"Odd Thomas is silently approached by the ghost of a young girl brutally raped and murdered, and through his unique ability to understand the dead, is psychically led to her killer, a former schoolmate named Harlo Landerson. With this opening, we are introduced to Odd's world. Koontz soon discloses how Odd was named and begins, layer by layer, to show how Odd's dysfunctional upbringing has shaped his life, and as those details are uncovered, his supernatural abilities begin to make more sense."

I'm really liking Anton Yelchin, he was good as Bobby Garfield in Hearts In Atlantis(I think an underrated Stephen King film adaptation), and as Chekov in the Star Trek movie. I'm actually curious to see how he is as Charlie Brewster in the Fright Night remake.

Suburbia in Trouble: 'Zombies Ate My Neighbors' Getting Big Screen Treatment!

I remember my brother hogging the SNES because he was deeply involved in "Zombies Ate My Neighbors," a sci-fi zombie game that takes place in suburbia where two best friends amongst a sea of teenage angst battle for safety against the mysterious uprising of neighborhood zombies.

First Showing is reporting that a live-action adaptation is currently seeking financing and that a screenplay by John Darko is already completed. Darko is producing with April Wade and Ahmed al Baker. This is currently in the works as an independent production and they're still securing rights, so maybe this news is a bit premature? Still, if the hype gets the movie made I'm all for it.

I loved this game, I had it on the SEGA Genesis. It was a great campy video game- you fought zombies, killer plants, killer dolls, chainsaw maniacs, aliens, mummies, even a giant baby. The levels were fun, weapons ranged from squirt guns to bazookas.
