EW: Is there a hole in the current horror-movie landscape you’re looking to fill?

Slash: The big thing for me is, I was raised on really great horror movies. But sophisticated, dramatic horror movies died out in the late ’80s, and now I’ve sort of lost interest in going out and seeing horror movies because they’re usually gore movies and they’re not very creative. It’s all about the sensationalism and shock value. What I want to do is bring back character-driven, dramatic, intelligent, humorous horror movies — horror movies that have some depth.

Oh, how I wish he will stay true to this.

It's kind of funny him saying all that, yet he liked Zombie's version of Halloween.

The Dorm That Dripped Blood slices and dices its way to DVD

Also known as Pranks, The Dorm That Dripped Blood has been picked up by Synapse Films for a late 2010 DVD release. While not the best slasher film to come out of the early 80′s explosion, it has some cool moments. It’s co-directed by Stephen Carpenter and Jeffrey Obrow, who went on to make such films as The Power, The Kindred, and Servants of Twilight. Thanks to Fangoria for the scoop!

“We’ve acquired it, along with many other exciting titles we’re announcing in the next few weeks, but this is one we can reveal right now,” Synapse’s Don May Jr. tells us. “We’re working with [director/producer] Jeffrey Obrow, and we’ve uncovered his original answer print, which is titled DEATH DORM. He believes that when the film was released as DORM THAT DRIPPED BLOOD, the theatrical distributor did some editing and changed things around, in addition to the name. Our print is the only 35mm version of the film with the DEATH DORM title, and it may contain footage that nobody has seen in 30 years.

“I just want to let the fans know that there’s a damn good possibility that this is a cut of the movie that no one’s ever seen,” May continues. “We’re just starting the transfer and going through the reels, and the print, because it hasn’t been shown in three decades, is very clean, so it’ll be the best-looking version of the film ever on home video. While we don’t have any extras lined up at the moment, Jeffrey has agreed to help us on those. We’re still in the early stages, but we’ll hopefully have it out by the end of the year.”

The movie, which was shot for $90,000 as a college project by directors Obrow and Stephen Carpenter (who scripted with Stacey Giachino), was also released theatrically as PRANKS. It’s set in an old dormitory where a group of students getting the place ready for demolition are stalked and slain via various nasty methods by a mysterious killer. The cast additionally includes Laurie Lapinski, Stephen Sachs, David Snow, Pamela Holland, Dennis Ely and Woody Roll; this was also the first feature for genre-fave composer Christopher Young.

Benjamin Walker Cast as Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Fox has found its Honest Abe.

Benjamin Walker has signed on to take the lead in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, a horror-thriller about the 16th president and his quest to rid the world of vampires.

The film, which will begin shooting in 3D in March, will be directed by Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch), who will also produce with Tim Burton and Jim Lemley.

Seth Grahame-Smith, who wrote the novel, will handle screenwriting duties. Fox is hoping for a June 22, 2012 release.

In Grahame-Smith's novel, President Lincoln's mother is killed by a supernatural creature, which fuels his passion to crush vampires and their slave-owning helpers ...

a cause that becomes a hidden motivation for the Civil War.

Now we know why Abe was splitting all those rails.

OUTCAST

What is it about:

It tells the tale of Petronella (a Scottish/Romany girl) and Fergal (her mysterious Irish traveller boyfriend). As their doomed relationship plays out, a Beast stalks the estate, killing locals, working its way towards our protagonists. Meanwhile Cathal and Liam, two mysterious travellers from Ireland use ritual and magic on a blood hunt. Mary, Fergal's mother performs ritual and magic of her own. As Cathal comes face to face with Mary in a vicious finale we know one thing: the Beast must die.

My thoughts:

I've been looking forward to watching this film and had high hopes for it when I heard about it for the first time. I just finished watching it today, and I feel sort of ambivalent about it.

While watching this movie, I felt like I was seeing a bad version of Let Me In, though I believe the people behind this was genuinely trying to do something different. I had to keep in mind that this was originally intended to be just a filler film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

The thing is, you don't even know which character to root for since each person portrayed never had room to grow. Even the romance between the lead characters were flimsy and I could not see any discernible reason for the two to fall madly in love with each other in their sex-laden, whirlwind romance. Even the supposed "thugs" with the track suits looked like kids out of high school.

Having said all these, I still found myself watching it to the end. I think their concept of the monster was original and the story, though incredibly weak, was good. At the least, it is good for a one time watch.

Does New Line Cinema Hate R-rated Horror? Updates on 'Friday' & 'Elm Street' Sequels

It's been quiet on the Platinum Dunes horror front ever since the release of A Nightmare on Elm Street last April. Even the Friday the 13th sequel has been met with complete silence. Dunes producer Brad Fuller took to Twitter late last night, and early this morning to clarify some rumors and update the status on both franchises.

"I want to set the record straight on Freddy and Jason. First, let's talk Jason," said Fuller. "[Damian] Shannon and [Mark] Swift wrote a great script. We are ready to go, when New Line is ready. But as of yet, they are not ready," he says of the long-gestured sequel to their Friday the 13th reboot that introduced Derek Mears as the new Jason Voorhees.

As for Freddy Krueger's return to theaters, don't even hold your breath. "As for Freddy, as far as I know, there isn't even talk of writing another script," he writes adding that "Rated R Horror movies, right now, don't seem to generate interest from the studios. Everyday we want to hear from any studio that they want a horror movie, but it hasn't happened. So right now we are working on a handful of films, including 'TMNT,' and 'Ouija.' "

Us horror fans know this isn't the end of Freddy and Jason, and eventually the studio will revive them, which begs the questions: why the **** not now? Instead of always looking at a calculator, it would be nice if the studio execs also looked at making their fans happy. Wouldn't it be nice to be a huge New Line Cinema fan again? Those were the days... New Line Cinema: the house that Freddy built. Hmmmmm.

I actually watched Let Me In again today to verify my initial comparison. Let Me In is still one of my favorites. The flow of the story was so smooth compared to this one, where no foundation can ever be pinpointed regarding the romance of the two lead characters.

The Elm Street remake tanked at the box office so I wouldn't hold my breath for a sequel, and it wasn't much of a movie any ways. The Friday The 13th remake I enjoyed and it did perform well so a sequel is possible. And when I said I enjoyed it, I mean it was far better than the awful Jason Takes Manhattan, Jason Goes To Hell, and Jason X.

BITTER FEAST

A celebrity chef exacts revenge on a food blogger who torpedoes his career.

I almost passed on this movie because I haven't heard of it, but i'm glad I watched it. I believe this is a low budget film, but it's never apparent, well, aside from the fake blood. For me, it did look fake. other than that, it was a nice and refreshing slasher flick with a wonderful revenge twist. I'm definitely recommending this one. :)

Was the blood watery looking? Or orange like Dawn of the Dead '78?
