It's right there in the Bible, at Exodus 34:13. Moses has trudged up Mount Sinai with a second pair of stone tablets, on which God will write the Ten Commandments. Moses and the Big G engage in some repartee, then God says:

"For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God"

This is straight out of the King James Version.

God reveals "his" own name: Jealous

In the original Hebrew, the key words in this verse are shem and qanna.

According to one of the standard reference works in this areas - A Concise Dictionary of the Words in the Hebrew Bible by James Strongs - shem is a noun meaning "name."

One of its specific denotations is "the Name (as designation of God)."

The word qanna means "Jealous" and is applied only to God.

Other English translations say the same basic thing as the King James Version.

The New International Version gives it as: "Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God."

The English Standard Version phrases it parenthetically: "(for you shall worship no other go, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God)."

The New Internation Readers Version gives God a more relaxed feel: "Do not worship any other god. I am a jealous God, In fact, my name is Jealous."

Why isn't this mentioned in Sunday school?

Perhaps because it could lead to children pledging. "one nation, under Jealous,' people cursing, "Jealous damn it!" or the government stamping on currency: "In Jealous we trust."

But if you're going to accept the Bible, then you have to accept it when God reveals his own name, no matter how odd or silly.

I dont know about the name itself but as far as the emotion of jealousy, at this point in the bible God was certainly very jealous.

Exodus 34

34:11 Observe thou that which I command thee this day: behold, I drive out before thee the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite.

God drives out the pagan tribes and commands the Israelites to destroy their altars and places of worship.

34:12 Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither thou goest, lest it be for a snare in the midst of thee:

34:13 But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves: Ye shall destroy their altars.

God, "whose name is Jealous", will not tolerate the worship of any other god.
How many gods are there I wonder? huh

34:14 For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:

34:16 And thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods, and make thy sons go a whoring after their gods.

Let's go a whoring! Wee! huh

Yes very sad manmade religion at the time and still is believed today by many.

One has to study the Hebrew versions to understand the meanings. If you look you will find that the key words in this verse are shem and qanna.

qanna translated means "Jealous".

If you get it out of the Old Testament of the King James Version you will see it.

Now smiles let me que you in on something before you think you know how the word struct of hebrew works.

1st we still believe Eve was made from a rib, yet when we look underneath we find that rib is curved and that is about it. To form eve. Go see what you can find out thier.

Because i know that you have been served a curve ball and actually believe what you have wrote.

Proverbs speaks about due diligence.

INTRODUCTION


The Jealous God?


The Old Testament clearly states that God is a jealous God. In fact, it even says that His name is Jealous. Isn't jealousy a bad thing? Does this make God the divine hypocrite?


The Bible makes it clear that God is not like humans in that He never commits sins, but is absolutely holy.1 However, English translations of the Hebrew scriptures say that God is jealous. Both the Old Testament2 and New Testament3 say that jealousy is a bad thing. In fact, jealousy is listed as one of the sins that will land a person in hell.4 So, if God is jealous and jealousy is a sin, then God must be the divine hypocrite.

Jealousy of God

The doctrine that God is a jealous God comes from the Old Testament books of the law of Moses. The "jealousy" is always in the context of idol worship, beginning in the Ten Commandments of Exodus 20.
• "You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, (Exodus 20:5)
• for you shall not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God-- (Exodus 34:14)
• "For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. (Deuteronomy 4:24)
• 'You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, (Deuteronomy 5:9)

What these five verses have in common is that they all share the same Hebrew adjective, qannâ' (Strong's H7067),5 translated with the English word "jealous." The interesting thing about this word is that it is only used in reference to God. In no instance is the word qannâ' used to describe human jealousy. The reason that God is "jealous" is because He wants people to choose to love Him.6 Jesus said that the most important commandment was to love God.7 God does not want us to waste out time worshipping pretend gods that do not exist.8

Human jealousy

Whereas God's "jealousy" is primarily restricted to a jealousy over the worship of idols that competes with His love to prevent a dedicated relationship with Him, jealousy between people takes on quite a number of forms. Two different Hebrew words are used to describe human jealousy. The Hebrew verb qânâ' (Strong's H7065)9 refers to a passionate jealousy or envy.10 The Hebrew noun qin'âh (Strong's H7068)11 takes on a wide range of meanings from sexual passion (or jealousy) to a zeal for God to anger or envy.12 The exact meaning (and the English translation is usually determined from the context.

Human vs. godly jealousy

The differences between the words describing human vs. godly jealousy are profound. For example, the jealousy that keeps one out of heaven is defined as "an envious and contentious rivalry, jealousy" (Thayer's Greek Dictionary). God does not envy an human being or anything that any human being possesses. God has no rivals. The apostle Paul indicates that there is a godly form of jealousy.13 The main reason why atheists think that God should not be jealous is that, as an English word, "jealousy" has virtually universal negative connotations. In the original languages in which the Bible is written, Hebrew and Greek, the words translated as "jealousy" in English do not always have negative connotations. In fact, the Greek word often translated "jealous" is zēlos, from which we get the English word "zealous," referring more to zeal and ardor rather than jealousy.

CONCLUSION

Jealousy is often thought of as being a negative trait. So, many people think that the Bible's description of God as jealous means that He must be a divine hypocrite. However, this page has shown that in the original languages in which the Bible is written, the words do not have those negative definitions. Since the word used to describe the jealousy of God is not even the same word used to describe human jealousy, it is clear that the apparent contradiction is just a result of an inability of the translated language (English) to accurately reflect the original language (Hebrew). There is no slight on the character of God in the original language.

Clearly the bible was written by men who were looking for an excuse for their bigoted male-chauvinistic behavior. They wrote the Bible to claim that God told them behave so horribly.

Clearly that's the only way they could justify their poor behavior. frown

Thats an AWFUL lot of extended exegesis with the sole intention of redefining the word "jealous". Look I found this online

GEE! Was that the only name you could come up with? You can't discredit God that way. Try some of these as well. :smile:

Qanna cannot be directly translated into English, jealous is as close as you can get. It means "to bear no rival". The word means that God won't accept that he has any rivals for his followers affections. It would be something like the righteous anger that a husband would feel if he caught his wife sleeping with another.

It certainly is... God doesn't cause our demise we do when we don't trust Him.

His word says that He loved us even when we didn't KNOW Him. Even when we were at emnity with Him.

It also says that it is His will that none should perish but that all come to the saving knowledge of His grace.

Let God be true & every man a liar. FYI...you can be angery with someone & still love them. That is what unconditional love is.

Man in full knowledge of God's word knows what God expects. To turn one's back is their choice to their own consequence...not God's. Jesus paid the ultimate sacrifice for us all & to reject that is to condemn yourself. This is no way means God still doesn't love all His children...it means He means business, He made the provision, His Son paid the price & you can accept it by grace or condemn yourself in eternity. Your choice.

it also says you can move mountains with the faith of a mustard seed, but not alot of mountains being moved.
It says alot of silly crap that we know is just not true.
But the gullible eat it up.
