Just a quick question before I go:

How is christmas an american holiday, when you obviously have a separation of church and goverment? Doesn't that imply that the United States is in fact indifferent towards religion?

Seperation of church and state.....a crock of sh*t......

How is stating "Happy Holidays" requesting that the Christians not observe their interpenetration of the holiday? That is a simple question that has not been answered thus far. Not satisfactorily anyway.

yeah....whatever.......for the most part, I respect other people boundries.......and their beliefs.....

But I think it is BULLS*IT, when stores feel the need to cater to UNAMERICAN WAYS IN AMERICA....

Screw the "happy holidays" crap....

It was founded as CHRISTMAS....not HOLIDAY.

other cultures may believe in something other then CHRISTMAS....but IN AMERICA WE HAVE CHRISTMAS...
if you live in America....you should respect the culture of OUR ways....as americans should do in other countries....

With that being said....

MERRY CHRISTMAS.....And a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow! You really don't get what America is all about. This country was founded specifically to offer FREEDOM of RELIGION. Check your grade school history. Christmas is a religious holiday, not an American one. This country is made up of many different ethnic & religious groups, and all of them celebrate major holidays during Dec or early Jan. Chanukah, Ramadan, Dawali, Kwanzaa, to name a few. Note: they all grew out of the pagan ritual celebrating the winter solstice.

Here's hoping everyone on this site enjoy their particular winter holiday. drinker

FREEDOM of RELIGION....
But it is not founded on changing tradition so as not to offend those who want something other then the tradition......

get er done!

Seems alot of people thinhk I made this post to spout off religious beliefs....WRONG....read all of what I have written....with an open mind.....you may be surprised.....lol

Um i think you are the one that needs to reread what you wrote. And then read all of the replies and think about why people are reacting to what you wrote. Hmmmmmmm

You need to google american history and read up.

Miss HellKitten, I for one do respect and appreciate what you're saying. I'm not about getting in anyone's face over any aspects of this topic. I suppose I just feel that if it bothers someone by simply wishing them well, which is how I've been raised to view the term "Merry Christmas", it makes me feel like I have to not only refrain from greeting them at Christmas, but maybe I should refrain from any greeting at all. After all, maybe they have something against "take it easy" or "have a great day" or "happy birthday". I'm not asking anyone to respect or appreciate my religion or what I believe. I'm just basically trying to spread cheer and maybe get a little back in the process but after seeing how much it bothers some people in this thread, I'm thinking I should just be blank and restrain myself from any direct greetings of any kind.
I think, from what I've had the pleasure to see, that you're an awesome individual and I really hope I haven't offended you or anyone else. I think I'll think twice before I post in any of the serious threads from now on. Not worth it...

I hope you don't think I was referring to anything that you have said, as I do understand what YOU are saying. I just don't understand the OP and the "american tradition". You have not offended me, nor has anyone else in the topic. Just trying to stir up some stuff. No worries darlin.flowerforyou flowers

often this is the reason for debates....LOL

I was prettymuch doing that....I knew this would start a rampage....no offense intended to anyone....no offense taken by me...

A rampage? Hardly. Its been a joke. happy

Its been a joke....as have you been.....thank you for playing the game.......you can go home now.

I will not deny that I can be a real a$$hole.....but that does not make me racist or stupid

Christmas is not an "American Tradition." Its is the Christian interpretation of the holiday to which they are entitled. No one has argued otherwise. What many of us take issue with is the bombastic advertising displays that force the Christian beliefs on others who do not adhere to that understanding of the holiday.

Thus the term"Happy Holidays" was coined in the hope of being all inclusive and not favoring one religion over another.

Your profile says "Christian-other" Were we not going to notice that?

the OTHER means NON-DENOMINATIONAL....look up hopecenternashville.com......there you will see the last church I attended.....ALL RACES AND CULTURES

But American Indians are not Americans because they arent Christians and they dont celebrate Christmas? noway

You are simply hell bent on making me look racist.....apperaently you see more race issues then I do......YOU are the one who continues to bring them up.....you are dismissed.....go away

when did Jesus turn into a white guy?

Good question. The Hallmark card rendition where he is tall and blond. huh My guess is that is not an entirely historically or culturally accurate depiction of a Jewish man.

wow....you show that you do know something worth saying.....yes, we agree....he was Jewish

So you can not answer my questions anymore? Okay I guess I will leave in that case. Maybe you should have thought this through a little more clearly. It is not only about you but the lives of others. There is a world out there that contains your fellow humans who have every right to be here and exist even if their thoughts, feelings, and beliefs differ from that of your own.

.

This is the Treaty with Tripoli. authored by American diplomat Joel Barlow in 1796.

Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.

How about we all just celebrate the holiday we want? How about we just say happy 'whatever' without being offended? If this is a free country I am free to say 'Merry Christmas' if I want. If you are offended then you are un-American. If you want to say 'Happy Hanakuh" fine, it's your right. If you want to say 'Happy Kwanza' Great(It was invented in this country BTW). If you want to say 'Guten Getrunkentaggen' go ahead. If you wake up you realize that it's not the people wishing you a Merry (insert) holiday that are un-American, it's the ones that get offended that are un-American.
