I do not understand why you seem to feel that I am proclaiming that the pineal gland has no specific purpose? I think I have spent several post documenting and explaining why I believe we still possess this gland in our vertebrate brain. The pineal gland serves several functions. First, it is the center for the production of the hormone melatonin. Melatonin is implicated in a wide range of human activities. It regulates daily body rhythms, most notably the day/night cycle (circadian rhythms). Melatonin is released in the dark, during sleep. I dont necessarily accept your assertion that it has a direct affect on the aging process and I have always thought that this function fell on the hypothalamus working in conjunction with the pineal. It works in harmony with the hypothalamus which directs the body's thirst, hunger, sexual desire and the biological clock that determines the aging process.

You are free to accept or not accept whatever information you wish and from whatever sources you deem viable or credible. We clearly diverge there.

Science is suggesting this link and additional purpose of the pineal gland to release DMT and cause these changes in perception when someone is at the point of death. This would also provide a convincing argument for why most all NDE and OBE report similar (but not identical) hallucinations.

It makes sense to me yet it does not conclusively prove, nor disprove the premise of an existing after life nor spirit world.
