1 Cor 14:34-35

34 Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says. 35 And if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in church.
NKJV

It is based solely on the culture of the time. I think that, with the way that culture and religion is changing, we will see women preachers soon.
This is one of those topics that just doesn't make sense in modern light. Obviously women are equally smart, capable, and just as loved by god as men. So, I would think this has to change soon.
Remember, when this was written a woman had virtually no rights. That's just one of those sad truths of history. Hopefully we can do better than that!

The "real" answer is much more complicated than the literal interpretation. If you've studied the text from an academic perspective and really drilled down into the Greek/Hebrew/etc. root words, the Bible never means to make women as second class citizens. It's too complicated an answer to go into in a post.

All I will really say is that Bible interpretation should never be made literally. It's too rich and complex a book to be read and applied so literally.

Many years ago women were consider God like because they brought new life into the world. In fact people back worshiped female fertility god and placed a chief queen to produce children. To satisfy the fertility god so that the queen who produce children as well as ensure good crops for the year they made male sacarifies. The male to be sacarifies would be the king for a year and have coitus with the queen to have children then be sacarificed annually. How's that for sexual politics!

It got to the point where the king would escape for his life and as time wore on they stop male sacarifices all together. In do so they changed the religious practice and demonize women to set a submission role for them. Modern day Jewish, Christian and Muslim still set a more submissive role for women because of this anticent and nearly forgotten practice.

MILES I KNOW WHAT IT SAYS, BUT WHAT IF A WOMAN DOES NOT HAVE A HUSBAND? IS SHE TO REMAIN DEAD IN HIS WORD.

what other faith's say has roots from the beginning and then over time changed. Just like Ishmael proclaiming the 1st born rights. As we see in our world today.. Miles

no a woman is always covered whether by her father or her husband. If she is a true widow then her covering comes through her good works and the church takes care of her.. Blessings.... Miles

I believe that these are the last days
with the Messiah's close return ...flowerforyou

I also feel that we are saved by grace
and not by works,
and that there is freedom from the law
by the shed blood of the living Christ...

i just have to jump in this one, i went to a private christian non-denominational school when i was in the 9th grade. we studied this topic very deeply. when some of you say that the bible shouldnt be taken literally i believe that your sadly mistaken. the bible was inspired by god for his creation. when god created man he said it is good. thats a heck of a compliment from god i reckon. so i think that we should take the bible literally. god didnt mean for women to be second class at all. the bible makes it very clean that men are to be the rulers of the earth. he told adam that in the begining he said that he would put all creatures beneath him. also for what eve did, god told her that she was to be submissive to her husband. this doesnt mean that he is to rule over her like a tyrant. anyways hope that this has enlightned someone somewhere. drew

Rob, you do make a good point. I had to go back to see who the author was. Paul wrote Corinthians. Paul was never married and he also said it was 'better to marry than to burn'. It is just my opinion but I speculate Paul didn't date much. laugh

what does all this mean then?

Isa 46:8-11

8 "Remember this, and show yourselves men;
Recall to mind, O you transgressors.
9 Remember the former things of old ,
For I am Yahweh, and there is no other;
I am Elohim, and there is none like Me,
10 Declaring the end from the beginning,
And from ancient times things that are not yet done,
Saying,'My counsel shall stand,
And I will do all My pleasure,'
11 Calling a bird of prey from the east,
The man who executes My counsel, from a far country.
Indeed I have spoken it;
I will also bring it to pass.
I have purposed it;
I will also do it.
NKJV Mal 3:4-7

4 "Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem
Will be pleasant to Yahweh,
As in the days of old ,
As in former years.
5 And I will come near you for judgment;
I will be a swift witness
Against sorcerers,
Against adulterers,
Against perjurers,
Against those who exploit wage earners and widows and orphans,
And against those who turn away an alien —
Because they do not fear Me,"
Says Yahweh of hosts.

6 Mal 3:4-7

Is this TRUE...Mal 3:6

6 "For I am Yahweh, I do not change;
NKJV

Can we just change Yahweh's words. If we do then the end of the book will apply.... Shalom... Miles

Countryboy I think you should re-read the God created man, man mean to also include man and woman, at the same time

1:27 God created man in the image of himself, in the image of God he created him, male and female he created them.

Notice the word "them" at the end of that sentence.

But then 2:18 through 2:23 the verses go through how God created Eve from Adam.

So there are two creation stories made into one. This suggest that there is a blending of stories in the Bible. So how can you interperate the correct word of God if the Bible is a blending of stories?

That is very true. Your wife is to be treated as Messiah loves you and gave his life for us. We are to do the same for our spouse.
