I know I upset somebody for correcting his/her spelling. Is it wrong to do so? Is correct spelling and grammar a thing of the past? My kids seem to have very little spelling homework. Is this not a concern to be teaching our kids and generations to come about spelling correctly and being grammatically correct? I have noticed that even books have been published with major spelling errors.

Just curious what others think about this.

In the case of teaching your children or a job interview then by all means yes. If its something casual like this site then no. I have had grammer nazi's attack me for a misspelled word and I think wow what must they be like at home does everyone have to be perfect. I have read your posts and I don't think you would go out of your way to hurt someones feelings though.

Thank you Jack. I certainly did not mean to upset anyone. I have let many spelling errors go without commenting about them. I am not perfect either. I do apologize for stepping on toes. Why is spelling not important to express on social sites?

I would never say anything on this site esp in open forum. I think that would hurt anyone.
One thing that does bother me but I never say anything is when people type like they are texting and only use one letter for a word, now that drives me crazy!!!

I can relate to wanting to speak and write English in it's grammatically correct form. It would really put a kink in your English grade in school if you were to fail miserably in this area. On a public site like this one, unless I were asked for the correct spelling or grammar, I would definitely not correct them, for the reason given by Jacktrades. Obviously, none of us are correct in anything 100% of the time, on any given subject. There are so many people on this site who speak and write English who have different ways of spelling because they are from another country. I also stand in awe of someone who even attempts to even write English, when it is not their native language. After all, how many of us from the English speaking and writing countries would use grammatically correct and spelling perfect usage after having lived in another country for just a few years? JMHO

I will never correct anyone's wrong spelling or grammer in this site for obvious reasons.However,its amusing to read terrible spellings and grammers from people of the 'first' world countries! Hahaha

I have to know someone well enough to take the time to correct them on spelling and grammar,, they are fading skills

Proper spelling/grammar/punctuation is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. Of course, nobody's perfect and mistakes happen, but if somebody constantly massacres the English language (and it's their primary language) there's a fair chance I'll say something no matter how well I know them. A few years ago, on the 'other' site, I was browsing profiles and came across one where she talked about how picky she was about proper spelling/punctuation/etc and how much of a turn-of it was. Well, I sent her a message correcting 6 or 7 mistakes that she made on her profile. She sent me a nasty reply and blocked me!

My pop was a bit of a grammar Nazi so sometimes I find myself doing what he did I can't help it sometimes its in my genes. He is also an English major so he actually knew what he was talking about. But the thing is English as a language even though simple has a lot of exceptions to every rule. One thing I have a problem with is when I'm typing I end up leaving whole words out or using the wrong word in a certain place. Examples are there,They're & their. Since both are spelled right the spell check doesn't catch them. My grammar isn't so great either and the only way to really improve it is to do it and have another show you the errors. Always had a problem with run on sentences as well. I know no one is perfect but when I see some of the stuff I've typed before I hit send I end up headbutting the table.

I think spelling is indeed a bit of a problem, noticed this as a teacher as well. It irritates me as well, not so much in English, but when it comes to Dutch, yes. It's mostly youngsters.

Indeed noticed many books have errors these days. Even books from proper publishers. I think that's really bad.

You correct them, let them know you're upset by them using one letter for a word.

You see? That was her own understing. She felt embarrassed at the sincere correction and blocked you. You did the right thing anyway.

Perhaps the most important lesson to be learned is that you simply cannot please everyone both in speaking and writing english language. My own english is the worst and please, correct me, I'll be very happy to learn from you.

Some people can feel very upset when you correct their mistakes and if you do not correct them, they'd keep repeating it. Would you leave their errors the way it is to be an amusement?

I used to go on this gaming site where there were a lot of pretentious pedantic people and you even had to pass a spelling and grammar test before they would allow you into the chat channels. I still go there for the forums and ocasionally have people trying to troll me about my spelling mistakes and punctuation.

I talk about philosophy quite a lot, so they think that it's ironic that I talk about intellectual stuff and my spelling isn't perfect. Well, I've had guys that had PhDs marking my papers and they made spelling mistakes but I don't think that makes them stupid. A bit lazy maybe but as far as I'm concerned, the ocasional spelling mistake is trivial and if that annoys people when I do it I always say to them that I think that says more about them than it does about me.

I do find text speak a bit annoying but I've dated women that did that and weren't exactly great writers. Basically, it doesn't really bother me as long as I can actually understand what they're trying to say, although it can be a bit annoying when you go to all of the trouble to write someone an email and you get some dumb one liner back in text speak with loads of typos.

It only drives me crazy when it is in a published work or newspaper/journal....I also see it in ads all the time.
