When it comes down to it, when you communicate via writing, spelling and grammar play an important part. If you know you have issues with either, you can do one of two things. Do your best to get help and use resources to make sure your writing makes sense and is easily understandable. Or, you can give up and give into those things that give you trouble and get mad at anyone who may say something or simply just doesn't understand what you're trying to say. Either way, it's a choice.

I haven't singled anyone out and this is not directed at anyone in particular. I do know people who have issues making writing tough. They just work hard to overcome them and get on with their lives. They have to, as most jobs require communication via writing at some point and they have to be able to deal with that.

Anyway, I get that people think these things don't matter here. If that's you, no worries. Just don't get upset when someone has trouble following what you're trying to say. Do issues with writing make you a bad person, or mean you're not smart? No, of course not. However, the way you deal with these issues when they come up do say something about you.

What you don't seem "to get" is this...Dealing with a spelling or grammar issue on the boards is a two way street...How you deal with correcting a poster's errors (issues) says something about you too ...The only time I see posters get upset when being "corrected" in public is when the person correcting them is arrogant, condescending, argumentative, or acknowledging them for the first time (not a good way to introduce yourself to anyone!!)....Even then, most posters who are being corrected take a lot of chit before they speak up and defend themselves...If you don't understand something someone has posted and you "sincerely" want to understand, just post back and say, "Sorry, but I'm having trouble following, can you help me out?"...Certain situations call for diplomacy and common sense...Correcting grammar on public forums is one of those situations...Some of your arguments for justification are, IMHO, just plain old BS though because if you can correct another person's spelling and grammatical errors, clearly you understand their meaning...Choosing NOT to correct another posters spelling and gramatical errors on a public forum does not necessarily mean those things don't matter, it might just mean they do not take precedence over etiquette and sensitivity....One last thing SingMe...Participating in Mingle's forums is not a job, we are not being graded and dyslexia is not a choice...

Leigh, keep in mind someone else started this thread on spelling and grammar. I responded with my own preferences and thoughts after many had. I am not one who goes around, correcting people publicly in the forums. Sorry that you felt my thoughts on this were offensive. I didn't realize that only those who thought as you did were the ones who should be responding. I'll keep that in mind, though.

Why?...It doesn't matter who starts a thread, they are intended for anyone who wants to participate, debate, discuss...Even though I don't agree, I find your take on the subject both interesting and enlightening SingMe...The fact that you and I don't agree on much is nothing newlaugh ..Actually, that's one of the reasons I read your posts, to see if you have mentioned something I may have overlooked:wink: ...If you go back and read the thread from beginning to end, I think you will find that, when it comes to correcting spelling and grammar on the boards, not everyone agrees on how it should be handled ...Lol, you will absolutely discover that not everyone agrees with me!drinker

This is very easy for me to read. It has nothing to do with your spelling capabilities. It is just how our mind works and adapts. I appreciate your comments on this thread. Thank you.

You're welcome JesusPrincess!.....It was posted in the spirit of fun:smile: ....It wasn't aboout spelling, it was a "joke" about grammar nazis:wink:

I can be a total grammar nazi bcith - once a teacher, always a teacher - lol, but I can also read that gibberish fluently :P Knew I could in Dutch, didn't know I could in English as well.

I am currently selling most of my books on grammar and spelling online. I'm not going back to teaching anyways. Keeping a few books for future reference, which will never happen as I always use the net. But ... in case we get solar flares and EMP, I still got my books on English grammar & spelling. Won't have internet due to EMP, meaning no Mingle and no need for English grammar & spelling. But that's not the point. If nothing else, I will be able to get my fire pit going with 'em.

On books...I don't care how much techology takes over, I will NEVER part with my books:heart: ...I have a "big" bookcase in every room in my house...Even the kitchen has a cupboard dedicated to books!laugh

My brother is a good speller. I get by and use my spell check a lot. On of the main reasons I keep firefox as a browser lol. Funny thing about spelling in english is that for just about every rule there are many exceptions. Like the whole I before E except after C and in words like Height and weight. grumble

@ Leigh, I'm a book nutter as well, haha. Just recently I started thinking "what if I have to move house again? Humping all these books to a new home, again, and what the he(k for?"
I found books I didn't even know I had, lol. New ones too. I'm going through a phase of letting go of what doesn't serve or suit me anymore. And boy, do I have a lot of stuff (that can and will go)!
I was so chuffed when I had two empty shelves in my bookcase! Trying to sell the whole lot that used to be on them.

Silly thing for me is that my English spelling / grammar got worse when I started teaching. Before that I applied the rules automatically, having had good English teachers myself at school (I guess, or I was just an eager student  ).
When I started teaching I had to KNOW the rules again, in order to teach my pupils and then I got confused.
When I quit teaching, I managed to sort of go back to where I was before teaching, lol, but I now do have a problem with prepositions.
Then 10 years relationship with an Englishman, didn't do my English a lot of good either. He'd been in the country for over 20 years, so he adapted his English so the Dutch could understand him (simplifying and limiting use of words etc). Meaning it often wasn't correct English.

So funny, my daughter (lives in the States) wants to go for her GED, but had problems with it. So she decided to ask mum, cause mum is a teacher, she will know!
noway whoa Whoops ... mum just managed to successfully delete the grammar & spelling rules from her brain slaphead Turned out her questions were about literature. ill Never was any good at literature, so I wasn't a big help. But was kind of awkward

 As far as I'm concerned, you bilingual peeps get an "anytime" pass for spelling and grammar errors...English aside, the only other language I've managed to learn is a "tiny" bit of French from my mothers side and a little Spanish which came osmosisly (that's a new word I just made up:banana:) because labels and instructions on almost everything we purchase here now come written in both English and Spanishohwell ...

I can appreciate someone's opinion that stresses the importance of it, and what it means to them.
Its important to the educators as well and many
of these grade three and four teachers that read all kinds of creative writing at that age and they
take 30 stories home at night and grade them.
Hopefully its their passion & in their pay scale.
So having said that; that tells us that if your
paid to understand it, you can understand it.
If its your passion as a teacher or a parent,
you will understand it.
If there's the anticipation of satisfaction in
the content, then you can understand it.
I feel that people disregard it as they can't
look past the mistakes much like DaviejohnDavid
said. Its really not having or wanting the ability
to obtain focus as these maddening personal corcks
dictate the results.
(Not saying a haven't completely butchers things,
because I have.)
I Wasn't ever embarrassed
by you because you were the first person I every
conversed with on the internet (how to be the jerk
woman love thread by Prints..lol)
I have been frustrated,disappointed, annoyed
and insulted. when I try to accommodate,
and I end up writing it 3 times which
takes a long time for me. Then for a person to
come back with a snide remark in the end.
At least 5 times you picked a work out and
said you don't know what I mean. Only one letter was wrong and you would claim to not know what it
meant, what a laugh, you were deliberately pushing
buttons and taking advantage of my good pleasing
nature,OR have a very very poor compression.
TO say you don't do that(single people out)
Well I would say your careless with the truth,
or have a mental obstruction (the inability to recognize your own faults) or maybe Sis,have a very bad memory.
I no you have had threads about this in the past
and people can respect yours and others opinion
if that's important to you,But many don't respect
someone that states there is no excuse.
I learn here everyday, and I learn on my own
accord, for me! and not to satisfy anyone else.
I did pretty much quit writing, apart from required
tickets for my occupation. This is the only place
I need an education. These days where I'm at, we
are required a ton of tickets and daily hazard
cards (JSA) job safety analysis, vehicle inspections
morning tailgate meeting card. but we don't
discriminate every test can be done verbally.
and if guys want in, and have the skills and
money to become a certified timber faller
there's a 6 figure job waiting for them for 200 days a year.
Education! I should sue my parents for wasting
12 years or my life, and for the pain & anguish,
I think I will.
Some people share you opinion that "its" important
but that was your thread not this thread as Leigh
pointed out.So go and pull up your thread from
days gone by.
Its not that I for one was mad if some one
can't read something a wrote because I write
a lot of post that many people WONT understand
and their's a lot more of those than ones I completely screw up on.
"Word to the wise" think twice before you call out a word on Someone's post, politely or otherwise and play dumb like you can't understand it,..and we easily can..

Drums beat,Cold English blood runs hot
Laaady of the night wondrin when it gona stop
Ponyboy knoooows ..that he's doing all right
Hear him whip the ignorance..juuust around miiidniiight
Stones..with a pony twist

Well, I'm not quite sure what you mean by saying if they're paid to understand it they will. Sure, there are teachers who are paid to teach grammar, but they aren't the only ones who understand it. So I am not sure what being paid has to do with it. Perhaps you can explain it another way.

And if it makes you feel good to say that I have a "mental obstruction," go for it, I guess. Is that what you usually do when you're feeling defensive? Make things up like that?

Glad you finely understand that a person that
has publicly been stating that there is no
excuse (since I've been around) with tools like
spell check and these people need to learn
or pack up shop; DOES NOT count as a viable opinion. OK BYE BYE THEN

Then you have the audacity to spin doctor the truth. People don't get mad because
somebody doesn't understand there post, they
take the higher road and tell them to polity
skip over it. If they are polite then a person
can try to reiterate,If You have trouble consistently with a certain persons post then
you need to LEAVE THEM ALONE BECAUSE ITS HARASSMENT,which leads to frustration, and frustration leads to anger

Since this this topic (correcting people)
and I have this great memory and you say
you don't correct people how about we dig up
the threads of all the times you 'corrected' me
or publicly dressed me down with your hang ups.
keep in mind,I wasn't knocking on your door.
we will just link them to this thread.
the irony is this thread probably wouldn't have
ever been started had it not been for you
and life circles that way.there an old expression
what goes around comes around.

If I have corrected you in the past, I apologize. I can see it has made you angry enough to hold onto it for quite a while. It was likely because I didn't understand what you were trying to say, rather than to be rude. Please keep in mind that not everyone is out to get you, nor is everyone trying to insult you.

the eye sees several words at a time and physically 'hops' along and up and down a page.

the reason that this passage makes sense is due to previously learning the language correctly however. In French or German one would not makes sense of it in any event unless there had been prior expereince in depth, with that language.

Most comprehension in reading comes from contextual clues as well as basic structures described in your post. for example, our understanding of this paragraph is aided by our previous and proactive knowledge of the general topic. Great find! Good post Princessflowerforyou

{{{Sweetest}}}
So your saying if we don't have any prior knowledge of French or German and scrambled the middle letters much like the example above it just wouldn't work, you have to know the language first.
Are you sure about this sweetstongue2
interesting read,I read it a few times.

"Contextual clues" I like that one, and I'm not
even going to make a smart azz joke. Yes, I can relate to this one as a person that often has
trouble spelling commonly use words in hand written
BUT we recognize as wrong right away.
we must have all said "it just doesn't look right
~n thats what she said~

"I just start rapingnoway"

"I think you meant to say rapping"

I can be dangerous when I write ,some can some be dangerous when they speak
Anyhow you handled that very classy and I appreciate it, I went back and was also shocked
as in a naive way,not even thinking about the other
word as part of my vocabulary.
I laughed, then edited back in and corrected it,
then wrote you with acknowledgement.
With that aside, its fair to say that I know you as
well as 'anyone ' here. We have shared jokes & I quite enjoy when you take a poke at me,so in your
case, IMO you could have taken a different approach, and I'm sure I would have found the
humor in it.
I wont mix them up again as I still can't be sure
which is right but I did just discover 2 days ago I can type In the bar code and it takes me to google on my phone and I can easily return to my existing post on my phone.slaphead Computer skills are lacking.
I have tried other ways in the past but it often didn't work, leaving me to start againfrustrated
Here I for ya..lol I think I had about 500 posts
before I figured out what was under the word
"Add smiley" as I hit it accidentally slaphead
I wondered how to get them, so I figured I must
have to buy them or get a free android app..lol
there was actually about 10 different apps but
I didn't think they were very good.lol

Unless you meant" Princess Leigha or the Lair"
that original posting was a GN joke posting
from Leigh and JP was just commenting on it.

I am the child of contrete & steel

 well I don't blame you one bit.
submitting something cool and having it dismissed
by the OP, THEN,her getting complemented on it,
Talk about unbeknownst insult to injurytears
Not a good couple of days eh..lol
don't worry, that's what friends are for.
Its the least I WILL do ;-)
and that's "Princess Leigha (OF)the Lair"
that's ok, we knowflowers
Great posts my brainiac..your a good mouthpiece /
you can correct me anytime:wink:
a little to the left,a little to the right

~n that's what she said~ hey it makes my 'job
easier, as no two are the same. ;-)
As I've said before; An old Cowboy saying is:

After reviewing this thread I have decided to at this time lock it down.

When it comes to a point that members are once again singling others out to respond towards each other instead of the subject at hand then it is time to move on.

As far as grammar and correcting others within the forums it is not allowed. And will not be tolerated regardless!

Sure there are times I have opened a thread and found out I was totally lost due to the spelling and how words were formed. Whether it be due to one being lazy or just has a hard time with spelling. Regardless of what the situation is, it does not give another the right to insult them for their lack of skills.

Therefore at this time this thread will be locked. Not because it was not a good subject. Just due to some find the need to insult/attack others for their opinion.

I have seen several threads lately where some find the need to leave snide remarks due to this type of issue. I would suggest in the future that if you come upon these type of threads and you are tempted to do the same to move on...
