I know I upset somebody for correcting his/her spelling. Is it wrong to do so? Is correct spelling and grammar a thing of the past? My kids seem to have very little spelling homework. Is this not a concern to be teaching our kids and generations to come about spelling correctly and being grammatically correct? I have noticed that even books have been published with major spelling errors.
Just curious what others think about this.

I'd treat it like any other advice - remain silent unless u are asked. people do not always want to be "corrected" especially in front of others, or on their free time on a site that is supposed to be fun. we're not in school here.just my opinion waving

agreed:thumbsup:

do you like it when people point out your mistakes?

@ SD FYI JP apologized after starting this post to the person she was refering to in the "Who would you like to meet in person thread." Don't you think we should give her a break???

sorry doesn't cut it. why do you and princess see a constant need to point out mistakes others make?

PS: {{jp}} I was responding to your post yesterday
and had written a lengthy post but the screen
froze and it didn't save.
As this doesn't come naturally to me, I was
discouraged, but I'll do that now.

The is a good thread that raises awareness.
I appreciate the thread

its funny because I was in the middle of posting
a thread two nights ago but a couple of towns
woman knocked on my door,I still tried to finish and post but with severe concentration problems it was just impossible.
I will start the thread today on
Faux pas: fopa's; social plunders and awkwardness.

Maybe when I come back I will take off my predicted
text features and not proof read and give you all
a treat into the mind of one dyslexic with focusing problems while writing.
proof reading with Dyslexia isn't 100%, as what you
see as wrong one day, won't register another day. when I proof read I often have to take out
complete sentences ,as I can't figure out what I
was trying to write.
There's also many other reasons that will look
wrong to some as {{{Missy}}} Brilliantly pointed
out. (once a cop always a cop..lol)
As a Canadian I know they change some spelling from the American English and just said it was wrong. I recall a teachers making the announcement
and saying " we disagree and from now on 'this'word will be spelled like 'this'".
eg.(labour & colour harbour) just one example,
also a few pronunciation changes in my time.
eg.(data ..as its spelled)and via (not veea anymore)
Many problems from the phone with the predictive
text (cheat bar) as its easy to accidentally hit
a word in the cheat bar after you have proof read
sections as I like to do on a phone at times,Again dyslexia aside, Our brains don't read every letter
mainly the first and last letter so I also do that
all the time as there may be five big words
that are in the 'cheat bar' and at a glance you
pick the wrong one,so it looks like you don't know
the meaning of that big word.
At times I can confuse the words on one certain day, but it doesn't mean I don't know.
and finely "continuous input" That's when your
phone finishes the word when its not the word
you want, like putting an ing on the end.
with this useless feature you can't abbreviate
like trying to write a user name.
{{{{2KM}}}} I heard you talk about a phone problem
I think That's what you were referring to.
when a bought this galaxy S4 they had the 'continuous input' on and it was a biotch to find.
the Samsung just shows 'predictive text with an
on/off option but I finally pressed on the words
'Predictive text and there it was a whole other bank with the nasty continuous input.
Hope that can be of some help, I feel ya! :)

Dyslexia..Wow
Everything I mix up: I, A, d,b and p,..About every
common one -five letter words gets swapped around
No s on the end, of/off, ch,sh th,wh ou gh ow )
and I really get confused with; the same words
with different spellings as to when to use them
one day I know it, one day I don't. I've spent
years using; there, to, no & such for every.

This is where I stand with it all:
I'm in harmony with{{{msharmony}}}
two words;tact & timing is everything'
in many areas of life.
If I have a 'Boss' or client gets in may face
about an issue that could get in my head before work or not let me have a shower and a plate of
dinner then its not going to turn out very good.
As we say in Canada; " I was looking for a job
when I found this one"
hence; the attitude.
I am short with anyone that is going to ADDRESSES
ME for the FIRST time about ANYTHING negative without 'provoke',lol But I don't care even on spelling if I have talked to them a few times,
they could call me f*en ... if they were aloud,
I'd think it was funny.
The only problem with that is others may think
they could say that to Anyone, but it would be
cool with me otherwise.
With all the variables mentioned, its a risky
area to approach, there may be areas that people
see me constantly do or perhaps more so when I
got here and I have corrected things I could
retain. Well I'm sure I mentioned it before that
I was receptive to having help, but unless you're
a professional in that area, then you may not
be able to help.
It still wouldn't bothering me if they have great
communicate skills and are well informed.
The "positive negative positive approach" always
works. (eg. "I liked your joke..by the way
your spelling sucks ..lol..ps You're a sexy SOB "
we'll try another one together:
I did all the dishes & cleaned up real nice.
Can I have $200 to go shopping?
and I'll get some lingerie and _ _ _ _ your
brains out when I get back". Are you sure 200
guna be enough...lol I like been worked in
general.

So that's the skinny on it,I would have taken tactful help but nobody bothered to approach.

The late great George Carlin on: "fine & Dandy "
"People always ask; 'how yu bin fine and dandy'?
I'm never fine and dandy, I've bin fine many
times & I've bin dandy many times but I'm never

AND NOBODY BOTHERED TO ASKED ME HOW I WAS.

Spelling and grammar being the special torture of my life I want to yank my own hair out when I sometimes reread my posts.

Having worked around so many "professionals" and all around "brainiacs" that could not spell any better I just figure I am in good company.

I think the gist of my points get across, and it would be the very rare post that I could not auto-edit and follow so this being a "community" not a court room I try to let it go.

But I get that for some folks this is their "calling" and bless their little pea-picken hearts they elevate communication and I don't take their coaching as malicious.

Now I see someone that is doing it to be a bully I just love to tear them down with word-smithing and vocabulary so far over their head they don't even know they are being insulted.

If all else fails we have a long standing joke in the south that this kind of behavior is "just precious".

In the case of teaching your children or a job interview then by all means yes. If its something casual like this site then no. I have had grammer nazi's attack me for a misspelled word and I think wow what must they be like at home does everyone have to be perfect. I have read your posts and I don't think you would go out of your way to hurt someones feelings though.

Thank you Jack. I certainly did not mean to upset anyone. I have let many spelling errors go without commenting about them. I am not perfect either. I do apologize for stepping on toes. Why is spelling not important to express on social sites?

Again good thread,
I certainly do take you as been sincere but I have
to say you seem very loose with your words.
just in this post alone you are far from elegant.
"I have let many spelling errors go".noway
"why is spelling not important to express on social
social sites"
Not everything that is written here needs to be
understood, not everybody socialites either
there is something for everybody here in the forums
things work on averages and majorities as do Country's I've paid $6000 in three weeks in taxes as a working man,50% when I couldn't contract.
then another 7% province sales tax(PST) & 7% goods & serves tax(GST) in my province at the store.
that's just the way things work, its the law of
average. take what you can get and leave the rest
behind.
Again "why isn't spelling important to express on
a social site"
I can turn that around and ask why isn't expressing
important to express , I will in another
thread, I may be on the bottom one % with the
spelling and structuring but there my be people in the top one percent that couldn't talk to
another human properly to save there own life's
as many people DO loose their lives that way;true
all the time and not because they can't spell worth
chit.
Anyways I agree with most all them.
Its negative, its hurtful, its supposed to be fun ect
but the people that have the tact and are 'elegant'
speakers that could address a complete stranger
if they wanted with ease choose not to so
I personally would go with their experiences on this. In my experience here 100% of the time
I was offended and not one of the commenter's
had ever had a prior conversation with me.
So the ones that haven't a clue...do
and the ones that could with ease, choose not to.
so the obvious advise here to the people that
think they better correct a stranger is don't
become you probably have less to average people
skills.
Ok guys... Did you hear the one about the
dyslexic, atheists ,insomniac?
I stayed up all night wondering if there really
was a doG  you guys better not have Laughed?
that one was for me drinker

I disagree. While we all have typos, it's not hard to spell correctly, especially with spell check. And grammar? Sure, people make mistakes, but to not care about it at all, especially when the form of communication is written, is pretty silly. If someone's spelling or grammar is so bad that it's hard to read or follow what they say, I just don't bother.

It's not about being perfect, it's about trying to write well enough to communicate effectively.

Pony, I never realized you had Dyslexia. I know much of what you mean. Especially if it's words like 'Accomodation','Communication', 'Mississippi'. I'm always asking is it one M or two in certain words. Two's and five's can really throw me for six, too. Six and nine also. Sometimes I have to re-edit stuff, which makes it look suspicious, but I know what I'm trying to get across in any message, so sometimes have to re-word it. I only got so far on a Journalism course because my dyslexia kept jumbling up certain words. Even though I was concentrating fully. You still sometimes spell stuff wrong, even when you're concentrating.

I don't know about this...unless it is misspelled on purpose it makes you look not too bright. JMO

Not too bright in what way? Not having a college degree? Just being a blue collar working man who's not trying to be something he's not.I agree its not to hard to hit the spell check button but doing that, does that make someone smarter or lessen their knowledge of life? Its been my life experience that all things are not perfect and that includes people, for myself I am more interested in the content of a person not their imperfections. Sometimes the ones that are perceived as stupid are actually are the smartest people in the room.

If you know you are bad at spelling, why wouldn't you use spell check? Lots of spelling, grammar and punctuation mistakes make things hard to read. On a site like this, I would think everyone would want to write well enough so everyone else can easily understand them.

I know I have heard the term but to tell you where I am not sure. I think it is maybe Old English or maybe even Irish. I think it is spelled Chicainery???

What I do know is if you get way back up in the hills, heck way off the roads and trails up in the mountains, of Appalachia they are absolute masters of this. And because most are not public school educated a lot of their education beyond the lower grades is based out of family bibles that are handed down generations so I would guess there is a heavy Miner's influence where ever they came from because they came off the boats and went straight to the coal mines from the old country to Kentucky.

Someone who really wanted to study language and genuinely wanted to help children of families that are fiercely proud and devoted to their children would go to the Red Bird Mission and volunteer. The poverty there is by any standards is shocking.

However if they were down to their last teaspoon of sugar they would serve it to you in tea with a grace, dignity, and hospitality that you were being attended by the maid servant to the Queen. Often pitied by outsiders I would guess they have kept alive that delicate art and it takes time and humility to gain their trust but more loyal friends, once made, can not be found. Well outside of Mingle.

Spellcheck not only tells you when a word is misspelled, it also automatically changes some spelling mistakes...When a person spells phonetically rather than from memory they often confuse words with two or more meanings and spell check doesn't pick up on that...Also, when spell check finds misspelled words, they have to be close enough to right for spell check to give you alternative spellings...Even if a dyslexic gets to the point of getting the alternative words from spell check, he still has to figure out which one to use...Spellcheck is a nightmare for most dyslexics so they just give up and do the best they can...If their best isn't good enough for you, tough chit...Read something else...whoa

Understanding adult dyslexia seems to be a stretch for some people...Since it is a relatively common condition affecting 1 in 10 people, my thought for anal retentive grammar police would be think before you criticize/correct others...

For those who don't know or don't care, if you ever want to know or if you ever begin to care, here's a list of the "writing" difficulties dyslexics face...

Spelling words correctly and consistently.
Using proper grammar.
Proofreading and self-correcting work.
Preparing outlines and organizing written assignments.
Fully developing ideas in writing.
Expressing ideas in a logical, organized way.

However people who are dyslexic are often highly talented in invertive thinking and creative thinking.

They often are greatly gifted in acting and vocal talents.

They have great empathy for people and are sometimes shy but extreamly loyal in friendships.
