If you post a link to what you believe is "proof" of something I would appreciate knowing why you actually believe that it is proof and what about it actually convinces you.

So many people just take the word of an authority as if that is "proof." But I like to attempt to understand the actual explanation and evidence rather than just take the word of authority.

I have a BIG problem with authority.

i just look at it that it(website) is self explanatory for the purposes that it was posted...but we can discuss it if you like.. i'm not all that smart, but i do have a good understanding of things..

Yes I can find an enormous amount of information on the Internet, in books, libraries etc. So much so that a person can get overwhelmed with all of that.

What interests me about forums are individuals and their thoughts and opinions about things. I don't just want to know their opinions, I want to discover how they arrived at those opinions. Why do they believe what they believe?

Each person is a unique thinking and information center. Each person is/has an extremely unique point of view. They are one of the eyes of infinity that make up this vast thinking reality.

My only purpose for being here is to make contact with individual thinking centers. Individuals.

Pointing to authorities and posting links are fine and helpful, but they are not you. They only a hint towards what you are thinking. They are someone else's thought processes.

So, we are to view a video and agree with it, but we are not allowed to post a video that has evidence to the contrary? It would seem that no matter what you do you will be wasting your time. But then, one gets the feeling that is the whole idea.

The flaw: Things grow by increasing mass. Where is this mass coming from? As pointed out earlier in the thread, the Earth has gained some mass from extra-terrestrial impacts, but not enough to support the this hypothesis. Moreover, the hypothesis would not hold up if there was a large enough impact to account for this extra mass, as the coastlines would have been altered owing to the damage.

The video does not give an answer to the question of the missing mass, nor does it posit a hypothesis on this fundamental aspect.

Furthermore, the video ignores the effects of vulcanism and the evidence of geological stratigraphy.

Where would this mass be coming from? That would be the question to be answered IF it was discovered or assumed that the earth WAS growing.

Since the consensus or assumption seems to be that all the matter in the universe has already been created and that there is no more mass being created anywhere, that we can observe, then the conclusion would be that a growing earth would be impossible.

If no more mass is being created, then in what other way might the earth be spreading or growing?

Could the structure of matter itself and the distance between atoms and all the empty space be expanding just as some feel the universe and all the galaxies are spreading and expanding?

Maybe things are just getting further and further apart. Maybe the structure of matter itself is changing.

Now don't get all excited, this is just an idea.

Matter is, after all, nothing but atoms and empty space.

If the orbits of the planets traveling around the sun can change, perhaps grow larger and further away from the sun, then the matter orbiting around the center of the earth, might also be moving slowly away from the core. Everything apparently spins around something else and the galaxies themselves spin and move and expand. The universe, the galaxies, the star systems, the solar systems and the planets, all spin and .... expand? Or does everything spin and expand EXCEPT PLANETS? If so, why would planets be the only things that don't spin and expand?

What you consider simple has more to do with your own scientific inadequacy than our ability to explain it. Also the information is out on the web, we should not have to sit here and school you on the totality of plate tectonics.

You are your worst enemy when it comes to understanding how things actually work.

The centripetal force of the earths spin is NOT greater than the gravitational force. (Hint . . . by a huge factor)

Are you saying that for the orbits of bodies in space, that sometimes change, the earth's gravity and centripetal force just happen to be perfectly balanced? How would you explain that? Luck?

My frustration is that scientists don't know how to explain something simply enough for a "scientific inadequate" person to understand and then some guy comes along with a video that actually looks very convincing, whether it is true or not.

the orbits are balanced, and not by luck... after billions of years, the sun has already sucked most of the debris left over that didn't form the planets. what was left over was the the bodies left by their orbits. there is millions of systems in the universe that planets crash into the sun, we just happen to know ours the best. the proof of this is the gas giant planets can only form in the cold of the outer reaches of a solar system, and they have found a bunch of solar systems with the gas giants very close to the sun of that system. this means they formed in the outer regions, and moved in closer in the billions of years after forming. but none of the orbits are perfect, they all have minute changes in their orbits. even the moon is moving away from the earth at a rate of about 1 inch per year.

That is interesting. (But I thought the moon was getting closer. It looks bigger.)

no, they put a mirror on the moon on one of the last missions there, and they have been bouncing a laser off of it since, measuring the time it takes to get back to the earth.... thats how they know it is moving away from us...

Okay so we have planets that are expanding their orbits, however slightly, and we have a universe that is expanding, however difficult that is to determine, and we have a moon that is gradually moving further away from the earth.

But the earth itself, although it is also spinning, and all the matter (atoms) that make up the matter are also spinning, but the earth is NOT expanding.

I see.....

I guess the earth is very special. Different from all the other objects in the universe.

Why? Because apparently the gravity that holds it is exactly equal to the centrifugal force.
