Topic: Why Should I Respect Their Faith? | |
---|---|
People tell me I should have some respect for other people's faith in their god. But, Why should I give their faith any more respect than I give their views on their fav football team? Or their political views? If their faith tells them the sky is falling next Monday at 4:00 PM should I not laugh out loud? I really don't think I could stop myself.

I don't think they can tell you any more to have respect than I can tell a Christian to believe in Allah and that Jesus was not a god, but yet another prophet. But they can ask you to please show respect. Like it's bad form to eat salami sandwiches on buttered toast at shul during sermon, or to clip your toe nails in the chapel of a cemetery or funeral home during visitation. To ask you to show respect they ask you to comply with the belief system of the grieving, at least for a short while. I can see the point in that. If they ask you to have respect, that's blind ignorance on their part on what constitutes those things and what don't, which can be commanded to be done in any person's mentality or in his world inside of his mind. |

To have respect is to hold it in high esteem. If I think their ideas are nonsense I cannot hold them in high esteem. In fact, it's sometimes all I can do to hide my contempt.

Personally I believe respect should be earned. If an ideology cannot objectively demonstrate how it creates a framework which elucidates knowledge it should garner no respect.

no respect for ignorants Say it with me ..religion(s)is IGNORANT It's more than that. It willful ignorance. Now, I can understand if someone has lived their whole life away form proper education. But, someone that still believes in a talking snake or a virgin birth or whatever nonsense that lives in a modern nation? I have to question their judgment in other areas as well. |

People say to 'respect their faith', but they don't respect if someone is gay sometimes, or if someone is atheist... Just because someone is religious shouldn't mean we have to tiptoe round them. I mean if you start being nasty to them about it for no reason then yeah, that's being disrespectful. But if you are disagreeing with their religion I don't see the problem.

Maybe it's not respect their faith but respect their right to it..you know, as long as they don't use it or hide behind it to do hateful or hurtful things.

In the beginning a group of educated people created rules solely for personal benefits. In order to suppress mass populations voice they created God and then they created a rulebook better known as Religion.

Maybe it's not respect their faith but respect their right to it..you know, as long as they don't use it or hide behind it to do hateful or hurtful things. But that just opens up the whole "Is religious belief (i.e. unjustified claims/ignoring evidence) really benign" issue, with the question of whether it's healthy or at least not harmful to believe in such things, or to force children to grow up being indoctrinated into a household that believes in such things. It's not something that should be afforded respect until it can provide the same evidence for itself that every other person demands for every other thing they believe in. If people wanted respect for their belief in the tooth fairy and demanded tax-exempt status because of it, could we really say we'd give them those rights? It's just a special kind of elitism that inexplicably gives people rights and power that they don't deserve for any good reason. |

It's stupid to tell atheists to respect belief of god. I mean REALLY?? I am atheist. Not only I dont believe in God, I know god doesn't exist, and you expect me to to respect something that doesn't exist at all? HOW m i supposed to take that seriously? LOL

A hilarious sketch from a British comedy show parodying the putative images of Jesus that people discover in random places:

I have always tried to have respect for the person until proven undeserving. Their beliefs on the other hand I will disrespect all day and night.
I hold logic and evidence to the highest standards. Unless there is evidence and a logical conclusion from the evidence it does not deserve my respect. |
