The Weight of the World


I live with the fear
of not being able to stand
the weight of the world
on my shoulders
as I try to become a man

My back
is against the wall
I lean back
not to hold it up
but to brace myself so that I won’t fall

I made the choice
of creating a family
husband and father
their lives
not mine
is the depth of responsibility

Nervous hands
toil to earn
enough to give them
what I yearn
sweat across my brow
work never seems to cease
so I never rest
they will always have
the best of me

And in these dark hours
I never wonder
where my strength comes from
as she leans against the wall
with me
so that we can carry on
