Stranger accused of slapping crying child at store

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Police say a 61-year-old man annoyed with a crying 2-year-old girl at a Walmart slapped the child several times after warning the toddler's mother to keep her quiet.

A police report says after the stranger hit the girl at least four times, he said: "See, I told you I would shut her up."

Roger Stephens of Stone Mountain is charged with felony cruelty to children. It was unclear if he had an attorney and a telephone call to his home Wednesday was unanswered.

Authorities say the girl and her mother were shopping Monday when the toddler began crying. The police report says Stephens approached the mother and said, "If you don't shut that baby up, I will shut her up for you."

Authorities say after Stephens slapped the girl, she began screaming.

Maybe someone should slap that bastard

If anyone had ever done that to my child.My child won't be the only one screaming. Only he won't be screaming from a slap on the face,more a kick in the u know where.

That was totally wrong. I would have pushed my cart off to the side and walked out of the store and gone somewhere else to shop. Nothing bugs me more than a crying LB screaming. It really does hurt my ears.

My parents would've smacked me more than 4 times and I would've learned and not done it again.

Oh well, times have changed.

How does smacking a crying 2 year old teach them to not cry?

A 2yr old coulda been cryin for a variety of reasons. One of which is pain. The mother might have been in there gettin medication for the child an was pickin up a few other things as well. U don't wanna hear the child cryin, leave.

or you could have a child like mine...severe sensory issues. take a kid with sensory integration dysfunction who happens to be two into a place like walmart, and they can't help but cry. they can't shut out the background...

and you can't just leave them home. sorry, they have to be exposed to life...and we don't always have back-up, and we do need to buy groceries, meds, and whatnot.

i will say that he would have never managed more than one strike on my child, if even that.

Shock that someone had the audacity to actually do that probably froze her for a second. I'm sure it didn't take her long to react. I would like to know what her exact reaction was. I would have hit him.

While I hate crying children in public, I would never hit them.

Why is it that every time I need to buy headache medicine for the severe headache I have at the time, is there always 10 crying children in the same store.
