Can't date someone with irritable bowel syndrome who likes to constantly try different ethnic foods that they know they shouldn't eat because I don't like carrying a backpack of toilet paper everywhere we go. (it was an awkward relationship- dating someone and their seperate entity stomach. Anyone see the movie 'Alien'? It was like that. Stomach going "GRROWLLLL" all the time).

I couldn't date anyone who is a basically "rude" person...even if it's not directed toward me. The way someone treats others says a lot about the person they are. There is nothing more unattractive in any person, to me, than if they think they are better then everyone else. |

I can't date somebody who voted for JOHN McCAIN Second that! I also cant date with someone who not only voted for John MCCain but cant see clear to understand what a truly monumental moment this is in history to have an African American Commander in Chief. It seems to me that even if you dont agree with the man's political pursuance, there should at least be SOME form of understanding of the historical significance of the event itself. The thing that people over look is that he is not black, his mom is most definitely white. Still a monumental occasion though. Sorry, I didnt mean to call you out, Ive just been dealing with that issue for a while now. Oh I know Polarity. You can clearly see he contains both Caucasian and African American (or perhaps even Middle Eastern) features. All I meant was that he is certainly not the typical white older male President. He has a MUCH broader appeal and a face that is reflective of a diverse global population. He's also handsome, lets just be honest. |

Again, an actual African American is very rare.
If a person was not born in Africa, did not come to the U.S. from Africa to live, has never been to Africa, or does not speak any African language, then they're American, who is black (or mulatto, or whatever). Ain't no "African" involved! That would be as ridiculous as me calling myself a German/Polish/French Canadian/American/American. |

Ain't no "African" involved! That would be as ridiculous as me calling myself a German/Polish/French Canadian/American/American. Not necessarily. The "African" in African American is referring to an ethnic lineage and not where a person physically resides. I am half Italian yet I have never been to Italy. That does not make me "unItalian" because I was born in the United States and claim citizenship to this nation. I found this on Wiki: An ethnic group is a group of human beings whose members identify with each other, usually on the basis of preferential endogamy and/or a presumed or real common ancestry. Ethnic identity is further marked by the recognition from others of a group's distinctiveness and the recognition of common cultural, linguistic, religious, behavioral or biological traits, real or presumed, as indicators of contrast to other groups. |

"In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Theodore Roosevelt 1907 This would be a model of "assimilation" that Roosevelt was describing. This is a somewhat antiquated concept now. It also clearly would not be applicable to ALL ethnic minorities and immigrants. Would a Polish or German immigrant have the same difficulty in blending in to their new surroundings as an African American or an American Indian? I dont think so. You also have two diverse ethnic groups there that were forcibly enslaved or moved in some respect. Not the same as a bunch of Polish or Italian or Irish citizens voluntarily leaving their native land for a new and perceived better existence in America. You can not simply look at this through the eyes of a white person. I prefer a model of pluralism in which each and every diverse ethnic group is enjoyed and experienced on its own merit. I view it as a big salad. Wouldn't you rather taste the cucumbers and the tomatoes and the celery and the carrots? Or would you rather eat a bowl full of homogenized mush? |

You know was just thinkin I can't date some one who... isnt ticklish. i mean really a girl who isnt ticklish is dead inside do you have any deal breakers? what is your "I can't date some one who...." This came up in conversation yesterday, and I agree totally. Just a quirk, but yeah, it counts lol. The deal breaker, tho...I can't date someone who can't laugh at himself. I do some stupid crap sometimes, and I'm the first one to bust out laughing. Sh_t happens, everyday. Enjoy the ride. If he's that self-conscious, he wouldn't want to be around me, anyway, I'd hurt his feelings without trying. |

I am not looking at this through the eyes of a white person. I am hispanic, first generation American. My father was raised in Cuba and was able to leave with my grandmother before the worst of Castro. What Roosevelt was saying, I believe, was that no matter where you come from, all people who yearn for the freedom that America provides should be treated with the inalienable human rights that are described in the Declaration of Independence and were payed for in the blood of the men who believed in them. Granted, those rights took a lot longer for some to recieve, but anyone can see that racism has declined significantly in recent years. I believe that we can all live together and benefit from each others beliefs. But I also believe that anyone who wishes to be live in America, should consider himself an American above all else. By stating people are "xxx" Americans you create a divide between those groups and other Americans. |
