Topic: Intellect: Turn-On or Intimidating? | |

So lilith? are you saying you put your intelligence and bearing right out there. Right up front so as to be the first thing a man sees? Be damned if I'm going to hold back just to make a man feel comfortable! Why should a woman act less intelligent to make a man comfortable? singmesweet, lets say I come over to your house, would you bring me in to show me your best china, how about opening the safe, show me your checkbook, the new car in the garage? My point: there is a time and place for everything and if you are interested in someone isn't comfort the thing? Don't you want to put them at ease? I don't mean lie, I don't mean condescend, and I don't mean pretend anything. Unless of course you are looking for a man that is willing to put you in your place. Then you may as well bring the whips and chains...lol Relationships are like dancing, do you insist on leading???? if you allow the man to lead does that make you less of who you are? I don't really see how those things are the same. You seem to want someone to not show how intelligent they are in order to make you feel comfortable. If you're not comfortable around an intelligent women, perhaps you should date someone different? If acting less intelligent than I really am is what's going to make someone feel comfortable, that person is not for me. I will try to talk alittle slowwwwwer.....lol..j/k "I don't mean pretend anything" = don't act less intelligent! If this is you being yourself, IMHO then more may actually be less. Good luck to you. Let me know how it works out! You don't want someone to pretend to be something else, yet you don't want them to show too much intelligence because it will make you uncomfortable. Ok, then. |

My take on all this is that there's brain smarts (literate, articulate, capability for abstract and critical thinking, and so on...) and then there's heart smarts,(knowing one's self, compassion, passion, introspection, ability to sense feelings of others and so on...)
My own feeling about it is that no...I'm not intimidated, nor am I especially attracted by intellect. What DOES scare me away is someone who has too much of one and not enough of the other... |

Knock Knock Knock, (first date) (Me) "Hello, you look nice, Wanna arm wrestle?". "Isn't the sky a beautiful blue today?"
(You) "Thats because, as the white light from the Sun enters Earth’s atmosphere, much of the red, yellow, and green wavelengths of light (mixed together and still nearly white) pass straight through the atmosphere to our eyes. The blue and violet waves, however, are just the right size to get absorbed by the molecules of gas in the atmosphere, then spit out again, but in all directions." For someone who is so intelligent, you sure have a closed mind. Your not willing to even conceed the possibility that I may have a point. |

I personally am not only much "more apt" to take interest in an intelligent woman, but thats a rule for me. It doesn't matter if she's a technophobe or just someone well rounded (so to speak), but I like em smart!

So, my friend and I have had this ongoing argument that I hope you fine males can finally conclude for us. Ladies, please chime in with your opinions and experiences as well. When a woman is smart -- aka can carry a conversation about things beyond TV and shoes -- has a career, is educated, etc, are you more or less apt to be attracted to her? My opinion is you should be more attracted to her. Obviously she can support herself and isn't looking for a free ride or a sugar daddy. Also, she's interesting and unique, and guys, you can get a dumb mannequin anywhere. And a woman who is smart thinks of some VERY interesting things to do in bed. Plus, you can bring her home to your family and be proud of calling her yours. My friend's opinion is that it's intimidating to men -- that we women should dumb ourselves down in order not to scare them away. IMHO, if we have to do that we're dating men who aren't worthy of us in the first place. So... what's your opinion? Cannot stand an unEducated girl. I have always reasoned it out that a girl with brains can carry a long term relationship because there is always something to talk about and for her to interject a reasonable opinion, the other view point that I missed... after her looks are gone. UnCultured women intimidate me... I was dating this girl and she was driving. Some teenagers cut her off. She raced up to them and started to cuss them out. I got away from her as fast as I can. |

Can someone please explain to me how a woman being herself, i.e. displaying her intelligence, can be considered pushy? I don't think I understand here....

Can someone please explain to me how a woman being herself, i.e. displaying her intelligence, can be considered pushy? I don't think I understand here.... There are guys -- I've known a few, I've played hockey & baseball with some of them -- who feel threatened if a woman knows more, earns more, thinks more, achieves more, etc. -- I imagine it's not quite as prevalent as it was in my parents' generation, but I don't have any statistics to back that up.... "Pushy" is just a way to turn it around on them -- one of my former in-laws described an intelligent woman as "uppity" once; I took that to mean that he perceived her as trying to be "above her station" -- not that he was in any position to define or determine what her "station" actually was.... |

Lexy,
Okay, I gotcha. That makes sense in a non-sensical misogynistic sort of fashion. I think my dating failures are showing through a clear filter right now. I just need to meet smarter men. |

Thee is a huge difference between being smart/intelligent and behaving rudely, condescendingly, pendantically lecturing in a patronizing fashion, one upping, etc. Geesh. I must look stupid if I'd fall for smart equalling pushy. Last I checked they were not synonyms. It seems that posters got these confused. I am not guilty of anything but being smart and not afraid to hide it. |

That's too bad that some guys can't see how it's different. |

That's exactly what I was wondering. How a smart woman automatically = pushy, rude, *****y, etc.
Thanks for the clarification! To all the smart chicks, find yourself a smart man. For all you guys who like smart chicks, you rock. Ya need to recruit, though. |

A lot of women say that a highly "intelligent" man is a turn on, but in reality they tend to interpret this as arrogance.
