Chazter The family of 5 = a Mom, a Dad and 3 children. Which I believe is right up there with the national average.
Not much education?? Gotta have at least a diploma and score purty high on the ASVAB for the Air Force to even look at ya.
And the difference between u and I is that I didn't look at the pay, nor the fact that I wouldn't have control over my life. I looked at it as giving back for the freedoms that I get to enjoy livin in this country. One of the same freedoms that u urself are enjoyin right here.
Nuthin but love for u Chazter and I mean that with all sincerity. Just do me one favor. The next time you wanna complain about the military go spend a month with a soilder and see their life for what it really is. I know u'd have a different outlook and be much more appreciative for what they do for you.

I never complained about the military. I merely said its not as bad as the original poster wanted to make it seem. As far as giving back, we can all give back in our own way. If I get the job I just interviewed for, and its looking good, then I will be helping engineer equipment for our soldiers aircrafts. Making life easier for them and a little safer too.

I didn't mention about the air force. Air force does require more education, but it pays better. Also I have a degree in engineering so if I would have went in I would have been an officer.

Dang! That's pretty good!
You have to consider the BAS and BAH (BAQ) is adjusted by the number of children! It used to be anyway! Its not the same for a couple without children and goes uo according to the number of children! Also groceries, clothes, alcohol etc are tax free when bought at the commissary or class 6, and the modern commissaries are the equivalent of a city mall in most mid-size cities today!
Also, all medical, dental and eye care is free, 100% free for all family members!
An E-4 takes a soldier approx 18 months to achieve. Multiplying the monthly pay you mentioned by 12 and dividing by 52 comes to $492.72 a week! Not bad when you consider only 18 months on the job and all the benefits that come with it. Lets dont forget a guaranteed 30 days payed vacation a year which will build if not taken, say if they are stationed in an area where vacation is not an option!

Well if the BXes are now like modern city malls they must have really improved from the last time I shopped in one. I did the majority of my shopping offbase because prices were too high for me to afford. And I didn't have one of those handy dandy tax exempt cards neither for shopping offbase.
Yes medical, dental and eye care is free. However, not always available to family members. But thank goodness for TriCare and Delta. It covers some of the offbase costs. Nearly covered a small portion of my daughter's orthodontist. And did I mention the staggering medical costs for her corrective heart surgery??
Yeah it can take a soilder 18 months to get to an E-4 but one night of one to many beers and he's knocked back down to an E-1 in a flash. Rank can be taken just as easily as it is given.
And do u really wanna know how many times my request for leave was denied, due to personnel shortage??? It's really easy to acrue but harder to take.

================================================================
That's PX, and the most rank they can take with a BN Field grade article 15 is 2 pay grades. A Company Article 15 is only 1 pay grade!
You wont lose it for drinking, but if you do something really stupid you stand an almost guaranteed chance of losing it!
Best way to avoid that is dont do something stupid!drinker

Yes, during high request periods like Christmas or Thanksgiving it goes by rank and other factors for leave! They cant dismiss the whole unit for 30 days at a time. Readiness requirments restricts leaves to 15% of the Unit strength at any given time!

Like they say, The Army didnt issue you a wife or kids!

I actually took the time to research the military payscale. For those of u who might be interested or need to educated u can find an entire payscale for the military, and explanation of all benefits, and even tax allowances.www.defenselink.mil/militarypay

Here's alil example of what the average person in the military makes:
An E-4 (for u civilians that's an enlisted not officer) with 6 years in the military makes a base pay of $2,135.10 base pay, now consider the average E-4 is married and has at least 2 children. The BAS (Basic Allowance for Subsistence for u civilians) is $294.43 a month. Try to feed a family of 4 with that. The BAH (Basic Housing Allowance for u civilians) varies according to location and whether with dependants or not (dependant is the military word for family for u civilians) Rent in an area that has a military base is typically at least twice the national average, so the military member is still havin to pay out of his/her base pay towards housing. Yes their is military housin on bases. The average wait for one is 2 years. And contrary to popular belief they are not palaces.

Yes the military personnel get tax allowances. They don't have to pay federal taxes on any BAS or BAH, but they do pay federal taxes on their base pay, unless they are in a combat zone and then they are tax exempt. They do also have to pay state income taxes, depending on which state they claim residency in. And u actually have to be a legal resident of the state u claim.

This country isn't perfect by any means. There are issues that need to be fixed. But they won't be fixed by people sitting around on their behinds whinnin about them. You want changes made then vote the right people into office locally and federally.

I gave 11 years of my life to this county. I'm not asking for a pat on the back for it. I did it cause I felt it was my obligation for bein a citizen of this country. And now my 19 yr old son is puttin his life on the line for all of us. Show him the respect that he deserves. He could be sittin at home on his behind typin on a computer whinning about this country but he chose to do something for it instead. I have never felt prouder of my son then when I saw him walk off the plane in his uniform and a complete stranger walked up to him and shook his hand. He modestly told the man thank u. When u get off the computer go hug ur Mom or Dad or ur sister or ur brother and be thankful that he can't so that u can.

I apologize for the ranting on but I get very perturbed when someone who has never served in the military wants to act as if they know all about the military. Again I say be thankful ur in a country where u can express ur opnions and views and not have to worry about being imprisoned for it.

THANK A VET FOR THAT!!!

Ok, that 2100 + the about 300 gives them about 30k a year. That is not including the housing benefits. They also get more money if they have dependents. They also have health care as well. All this for people w/o a college degree.

These pay scales and benefits are posted for all to see. If people don't want to join the military they don't have too. When I went to do some testing for the air force I met several people that were getting ready to be deployed in all branches of the armed forces. I talked to a lot of people that were going to iraq and had been before. They knew what they were getting into and they were actually very excited.

This will not be true once McCain gets in office, draft will eliminate the OPTIONAL. And we know the rich know how to make their children miss the draft so all the poor people will do all the serving then.

Lol there will not be a draft.

Chazter, evidently you didn't read my entire post or you would have read the part about the housin allowance varies but yet doesn't cover rent offbase. Landlords will double even triple rent in an area that has a military base. I personally paid $2,000 a month rent for a 2bdr apartment. Only a portion of that was covered by housin allowance, the rest came out of base pay. OR the fact that I had medical bills well over $200,000 for my daughter's corrective heart surgery that had to be done by civilian doctors because there were no military doctors available to do it.
Have you tried to take care of a family of 5 on 30k a year??? Do you realize that a large portion of the military actually qualify for welfare??
I'm going to guess that you didn't join the Air Force or u'd know that the military doesn't get paid nearly what they deserve for what they do.
Have you ever spent 12 hours straight in full chem gear??? That alone deserves a bump in pay.
I used to be all for required military service such as Germany has but now I'm thankful we don't. I wouldn't want someone who obviously has no idea what compels those who willingly join the military to do so, guarding my six.

Did you serve in the US Military?

I did and dependent health care is free!
12 straight hours? Try 36!!!

Unfortunately the surgery she needed wasn't available at a military hospital. She had to be taken to Children's Hospital in Boston to have it done.
No thanks on the 36, 12 was enough for me.
And yes I was in the Air Force, served proudly. And now my son carries on the long family tradition of military service. He's in the Army.

Ah, the good life!!

I had a friend in the AF. I went to see him and they had maids that came in to clean their barracks room!

Well, he didn't say the war would last 100 years. He was merely stating that he wanted to see it through to the end. Also with our current technology and how fast its advancing we would need less and less soldiers actually there, and since we have an extremely low casualty rate there will be no need for a draft.

Fanta darling in the Air Force we call it the BX, Air Force has bases not posts
and I was merely bein alil liberal on my explanation as to the fact that u can lose rank as easily if not quicker than u gain it. I apologize for any confusion that may have caused.
Yes leave is based on rank, and also "unit strength as u put it. In the command that I worked in there were 7 of us and I was lowest on the totem pole so I got turned down for leave several times due to the fact that someone who outranked me wanted it at the same time or someone who held the same rank but had been stationed there longer wanted it at the same time.
Please don't think that I'm complainin about the military in anyway. Far from it. I'd just like for those who've never served who seem to have such a narrow view to understand what it's like. I'd sign my name on the dotted line again in a heartbeat if the Air Force would have me.

same here, my family has been in every branch includin coast guard and merchant marines. My jarhead uncles sent me a pic of them in their USMC tshirts givin me the finger when I was in basic. I loved em for it. No matter what branch u serve in u r forever a part of the "brotherhood". That's one of the great things about being military. You've got family anywhere u go.
Honestly I love alil squabblin between the branches. It's all in good fun. Cause we all know without the others none of them work.
