Supporting the soldiers does not mean that we have to buy into any of the garbage about the war being just, being "for the Iraqis" (lie), or any other hype about the war. The war was a personal agenda "military action".

Our military does what they are told and if they have to believe they are doing something good in order to continue their jobs, then so be it. But this war was illegal and has not ever been for the benefit of the Iraqis.

My opinion of course.

Most soldiers would disagree with you dragon. They certainly aren't fighting for oil, or anything of that sort. Right now, the fight is for the Iraqi's so they can stand on two legs. I don't care what reason our politicians have for sending us there. Right now it's irrelevant. It's not their war, it's the soldeirs' now. Most of them believe what they are doing is actually making a difference. Although, they are the only ones who didn't get their views from newspapers and television...

One stand I've always taken is we should not have gone over there, however that is past and done with...we are there, we are changing Iraq for the good (even with the possibility it won't last) and that is that...we can't change what happened yesterday, but we can change what happens tomorrow.

I agree we need to start withdrawing, well we should have been, and all troops should be out of Iraq within 6 months to a year!
The Iraqi Army is 180,000 strong now, bigger than ours in country, and should be able to stand on their own!
If they ever will be able! I dont think they can.
They dont have the commitment to their puppet leaders needed for such a thing, and their commitment to the gov we put in power isn't going to change 20 yrs from now if it doesn't exist today!

"Well, they blew the horns
And the walls came down
They'd all been warned
And the walls came down
They stood there laughing
They're not laughing anymore
The walls came down

Sanctuary fades
Congregation splits
Nightly military raids
The congregation splits
It's a song of assassins
Ringin' in your ears
We got terrorist thinking
Playing on fears

Well, they blew the horns
And the walls came down
They'd all been warned
But the walls came down
I don't think there are any Russians
And there ain't no Yanks
Just corporate criminals
Playing with tanks"

I actually took the time to research the military payscale. For those of u who might be interested or need to educated u can find an entire payscale for the military, and explanation of all benefits, and even tax allowances.www.defenselink.mil/militarypay

Here's alil example of what the average person in the military makes:
An E-4 (for u civilians that's an enlisted not officer) with 6 years in the military makes a base pay of $2,135.10 base pay, now consider the average E-4 is married and has at least 2 children. The BAS (Basic Allowance for Subsistence for u civilians) is $294.43 a month. Try to feed a family of 4 with that. The BAH (Basic Housing Allowance for u civilians) varies according to location and whether with dependants or not (dependant is the military word for family for u civilians) Rent in an area that has a military base is typically at least twice the national average, so the military member is still havin to pay out of his/her base pay towards housing. Yes their is military housin on bases. The average wait for one is 2 years. And contrary to popular belief they are not palaces.

Yes the military personnel get tax allowances. They don't have to pay federal taxes on any BAS or BAH, but they do pay federal taxes on their base pay, unless they are in a combat zone and then they are tax exempt. They do also have to pay state income taxes, depending on which state they claim residency in. And u actually have to be a legal resident of the state u claim.

This country isn't perfect by any means. There are issues that need to be fixed. But they won't be fixed by people sitting around on their behinds whinnin about them. You want changes made then vote the right people into office locally and federally.

I gave 11 years of my life to this county. I'm not asking for a pat on the back for it. I did it cause I felt it was my obligation for bein a citizen of this country. And now my 19 yr old son is puttin his life on the line for all of us. Show him the respect that he deserves. He could be sittin at home on his behind typin on a computer whinning about this country but he chose to do something for it instead. I have never felt prouder of my son then when I saw him walk off the plane in his uniform and a complete stranger walked up to him and shook his hand. He modestly told the man thank u. When u get off the computer go hug ur Mom or Dad or ur sister or ur brother and be thankful that he can't so that u can.

I apologize for the ranting on but I get very perturbed when someone who has never served in the military wants to act as if they know all about the military. Again I say be thankful ur in a country where u can express ur opnions and views and not have to worry about being imprisoned for it.

THANK A VET FOR THAT!!!

 You can be imprisoned for expressing your views. I guarantee that if I began gathering a group around myself, outside of the military governments authority structure, they would put me on trial and try to imprison me. Your only free until you begin rocking the boat and then they will come after you with full force. They will use the words "terrorist" and "cult" to justify their actions to the public.glasses

Dang! That's pretty good!
You have to consider the BAS and BAH (BAQ) is adjusted by the number of children and grade (an E-4 gets more than an E-3 etc)! It used to be anyway! Its not the same for a couple without children and goes uo according to the number of children! Also groceries, clothes, alcohol etc are tax free when bought at the commissary or class 6, and the modern commissaries are the equivalent of a city mall in most mid-size cities today!
Also, all medical, dental and eye care is free, 100% free for all family members!
An E-4 takes a soldier approx 18 months to achieve. Multiplying the monthly pay you mentioned by 12 and dividing by 52 comes to $492.72 a week! Not bad when you consider only 18 months on the job and all the benefits that come with it. Lets dont forget a guaranteed 30 days payed vacation a year which will build if not taken, say if they are stationed in an area where vacation is not an option!
Granted its not the $175,000 that a Calif cop or firefighter makes, but like you said this country isnt perfect and soldiers arent allowed to have unions! Still not bad, esp with the new GI Bill giving them a 4 year scholarship at any major University!

Well if the BXes are now like modern city malls they must have really improved from the last time I shopped in one. I did the majority of my shopping offbase because prices were too high for me to afford. And I didn't have one of those handy dandy tax exempt cards neither for shopping offbase.
Yes medical, dental and eye care is free. However, not always available to family members. But thank goodness for TriCare and Delta. It covers some of the offbase costs. Nearly covered a small portion of my daughter's orthodontist. And did I mention the staggering medical costs for her corrective heart surgery??
Yeah it can take a soilder 18 months to get to an E-4 but one night of one to many beers and he's knocked back down to an E-1 in a flash. Rank can be taken just as easily as it is given.
And do u really wanna know how many times my request for leave was denied, due to personnel shortage??? It's really easy to acrue but harder to take.
