Many people are surprised to learn that the United States has no official language. As one of the major centers of commerce and trade, and a major English-speaking country, many assume that English is the country's official language. But despite efforts over the years, the United States has no official language.

Forcing people to learn and speak a language........hmmmmmmm. Sounds familiar...............it will come back...........Oh Yes!! I remember the Residential School System. Forget that you are a Native, forget your language, your culture. Become good little natives and look / act white. BLEH!!!!!!

i dont care if they speak our language or not. i speak theirs. i learned spanish because i wanted to and i am a better person for it. i have friends both legal and illegal and i most always communicate with them in spanish even if they can speak english. however, i do try to teach them our language.

The last change in the Pledge of Allegiance occurred on June 14 (Flag Day), 1954 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower approved adding the words "under God".

My post was in response to those who would back a bill making English the language of the land by law. How about a bill recognizing Cherokee, Mandan, Mohawk, Huron, Apache, Oglala, etc. They are all recognized Nations. After all treaties are made with Nations and they were here before English.

Why is it is you feel that the laws of this nation are to be upheld, and don't believe illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay you are considered prejudice? I just want honest forward answers please.
I say if you enter through the proper channels, then welcome one and all. I don't consider this prejudice but patriotic. Anyone enjoying the freedoms of our country should have a desire to exhibit their patriotism too, buy doing it legally with the goal of becoming a citizen.

Over two thirds of Mexico's 105 million people live in cities, contrary to the stereotype of peasants and farmers often fostered by the movies. The country's capital, Mexico City, is inhabited by over 15 million people and is one of the largest cities in the world.

Over 95% of the population speak Spanish, which is the official national language.

Indians make up almost 25% of the population but less than 10% speak an indian language, of which there are more than 50.

I'm not from India, not Indian. I am a Native American, Member of the First Nations, One of the First Peoples of North America.
As to the languages no longer/rarely spoken by the First Peoples again .....Residential Schools, Americanization. There are languages which have been wiped from those who should speak it, ie: Huron, now known only to whites who teach those of that Nation from books put together by Priests.

As to the 'to the victor go the spoils'. Try using the methods used then now and see where you get. Genocide, the destruction of a people's food source and bacterial warfare. Breaking treaties with sovereign nations etc. But then I suppose the quote would become 'to the victor the right to decide what is moral'.

I find the lose of the cultures and languages sad and unnecessary. English does not need to be our official language, we speak english here that does not need to be established and if someone would like to teach me other languages I would love it.

As for the prejudice of the illegals, yes rob, some do get prejudice with their "fixes" and opinions of the issues involved. The subject itself is not prejudice, it is the stygma that gets put on it that is. That is all from me for the night on this subject as I need my beauty sleep so good night all.flowerforyou

Language, culture and way of life were not erased. Whole nations were not wiped out. Where are the Beothuk today? Wiped out to last...not by tribal warfare either.
