What is the real story is how 6% of the population could be that stupid?

I took my Jeep out and drove around the Southern part of Houston yesterday. The water was starting to creep over Highway 6, but I didn't have any trouble getting around. I wondered as I have many times, why people would build nice homes without building the foundation up above the flood plain. The knowledge, history, and data is there and they save a few thousand dollars to have a home worth over a hundred thousand dollars under water every now and then.ohwell

Seems kinda stupid.

Earth's Mass Extinctions
Asteroid strikes get all the coverage, but "Medea Hypothesis" author Peter Ward argues that most of Earth's mass extinctions were caused by lowly bacteria.

A slight mutation of the common flu could cause the virus to be 100% lethal. There is great concern that rogue nations would seek this mutation as a weapon.

Thousands of teachers flock to ‘White Privilege Conference’

PHILADELPHIA – Thursday marked the start of “The 17th Annual White Privilege Conference” and this year’s theme is “Let Freedom Ring, Re-Imagining Equality & Social Justice in the United States.”

whiteprivilegeThe annual event is aimed at promoting the theory of White Privilege – that American society is hopelessly stacked against minorities and the only way to fix the system is for white people to acknowledge their immense “privilege” and repent.

“Our vision is to build a community committed to dismantling white privilege, white supremacy and oppression, every day, everywhere,” wrote Eddie Moore Jr., founder and president of “The Privilege Institute,” which organizes the event.

“WPC fosters an environment where every participant can engage deeply, and then through our Accountability program, bring what they have learned back to their own community so that their WPC experience impacts their lives, employment, and community all year long.”

The 2016 theme and Philadelphia location are designed to highlight the main reasons why the White Privilege Institute, and its like-minded attendees at the conference, hate America the most.

“Throughout the history of the United States, ‘liberty’ and ‘justice’ have been espoused values, which have only ever applied to a very small minority of people,” according to a letter to conference participants. “The Constitution supported the enslavement of Africans; the U.S. government orchestrated the decimation of Native American nations; until 1952 Congress prohibited Asians and Latinos from naturalizing as U.S. citizens because they were not White; the Bill of Rights did not apply to persons who were not White, male and Christian.”

The letter also offered a few questions for attendees to ponder during the conference, among them: “What would it look like to have reparations for all injustices committed in the U.S. and for the broken promises of liberty and justice for all?” and “How has Christianity shaped life in the U.S. to the exclusion and oppression of other religions?”

Metro reports 2,500 teachers, school administrators and counselors will attend the conference — the largest attendance to date.

The conference is championed by a radical sect of educators from the organization Rethinking Schools, which promotes the concepts of white privilege and the conference itself to teachers across the country. In 2014, EAGnews attended the White Privilege Conference in Madison, Wisconsin to record some of the sessions.

“The master’s house has a black face, but it’s still the master’s house,” one professor told her audience in 2014. “(Obama) works for the master of the system of white privilege.”

“And then there are the little white families who live in the little white zones in little white gated communities and send their kids to little white academies,” activist Leonard Zeskind explained at the time.

The 2016 conference features a wide variety workshops and caucus groups for adults and students that focus on race, racism, perceived white privilege and black oppression, and other “racial justice” topics.

Student workshops include “Racial Literacy Reflections: Youth Buffering Rejection through a Racial Trauma Magazine,” “I’m a good person! Isn’t That Enough?” “Nativism 101,” “Hip Hop and White Privilege,” “White Privilege and Implicit Bias: Dealing with Unconscious Stereotypes and Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack,” and others.

The event, which runs today through Sunday, also features breakout sessions like the “4th Annual Black Male Think Tank” and “Institutes” on specific social justice topics, such as “The National Constitution Center: An Exploration of the White Racial Frame,” “White Women: Internalized Sexism and White Superiority,” and “White Followership – Centering People of Color and Building Effective White Practices for Racial Justice & Systemic Change.”

This year’s race-based conference also branches into new territory with discussions about gay and transgender rights, as well as Islam.

The workshop “’But I’m an Ally!’: LGBTQ Youth, Inersectionality & White Privilege,” for example, “help youth-serving professional unpack how white privilege and white supremacy limit our ability to be effective allies to LGBTQ youth, in particular, LGBTQ youth of color,” the conference program explains.

The workshop “White American Islamophobia,” meanwhile, explains how “bigoted views of white conservatives like Bill O’Reilly and white liberals such as Bill Maher unveil how Islamophobia is not a partisan issue.”

It also aims to “clear up misinformation about Islam and Muslims and the socio-political implications of White American Xenophobia,” according to the program.

Here is the actual content of the so called 'satanic' pamphlet. I agree with the blogger, its cute.

I don't really get why these atheists call themselves 'satanic'. Previously, most people accepted that the term 'satanic' meant 'devil worshiping'.

Because it gets attention.

Thanks, makes sense.

When you say "..because space itself is falling into
the black hole faster than the speed of light."

I am trying to figure how this relates to when we
see it in real time?

If the hole is say billions of years old, but enlarging
faster than light travels, can our universe have been..
swallowed long ago?

That's a little bit "apples and oranges". Gravity warps
time and space. The closer you get to the black hole the slower time
operates from the view of an observer (relativity). When light can't
get away from the gravity source due to space warping, you don't see
anything anymore. This is the black part. The actual gravity source
(the singularity) is infinitely small. The Black Hole (event horizon)
is just the zone of intense gravity that warps space. Therefore, all the events that occur in the heavily warped space near the singularity
are invisible to us. The visible jets, accretion disc, and glowing gas, are all outside that zone and operate in space normal enough for things to be visible.

The "hole" doesn't enlarge faster than the speed of light. In fact, the singularity doesn't enlarge at all. The event horizon enlarges proportional to the amount of mass it swallows. Current theory is that primordial black holes were formed by a huge cloud of gas that did not need a star to collapse. Galaxies could then have formed around them.

A feeding black hole emits the jet.

Okay, 'splain me why these can be seen, these jets?
When everything around a black hole absorbs light?

Is it some kind of spinning..friction that we see?

Exactly ... spinning friction. What happens is that dust, gas, planets, even other stars, fall into the gravity field of a supermassive black hole but typically do not dive straight at it's center. As the falling objects fall in with tighter and tighter orbits with higher and higher velocities (scientifically, this is called conservation of angular momentum), they start to rub on each other and the friction creates heat. The objects can reach a significant percentage of the speed of light and the heat generated by friction is in the millions of degrees. At this point, the matter emits gamma rays which heat up anything they strike making the jet visible. None of this matter has yet to enter the event horizon of the black hole. It is just orbiting at extreme velocity.

Matter must get close enough to the black hole to warp space/time in excess of the speed of light for things to "go black". This distance from the center of the black hole is known as the event horizon. Nothing that gets closer, not even light, to the black hole can escape because space itself is falling into the black hole faster than the speed of light.

One way time travel is easy and has happened many times as described in the original article. Einstein's equations work and are the basis of modern physics. All you need is speed.

Backwards time travel is another story. It may be possible but no one knows how to do it yet.

The physics of black holes open additional possibilities of freezing time.

But time is just math? Afraid not. It is possible now to make one member of a set of twins an old man while the other is still young using nothing but a fast moving spacecraft. That is time travel.

no it's not... "proof" is doing it, not speculating on it...

Every astronaut has done it. Good grief, don't you know ANYTHING about physics?

Here's a little quote from space.com ... a short explanation of what happens as we move faster and slow time.

"Einstein's theory of special relativity says that time slows down or speeds up depending on how fast you move relative to something else. Approaching the speed of light, a person inside a spaceship would age much slower than his twin at home. Also, under Einstein's theory of general relativity, gravity can bend time.

Picture a four-dimensional fabric called space-time. When anything that has mass sits on that piece of fabric, it causes a dimple or a bending of space-time. The bending of space-time causes objects to move on a curved path and that curvature of space is what we know as gravity.

Both the general and special relativity theories have been proven with GPS satellite technology that has very accurate timepieces on board. The effects of gravity, as well as the satellites' increased speed above the Earth relative to observers on the ground, make the unadjusted clocks gain 38 microseconds a day. (Engineers make calibrations to account for the difference.)

In a sense, this effect, called time dilation, means astronauts are time travelers, as they return to Earth very, very slightly younger than their identical twins that remain on the planet.
- See more at: http://www.space.com/21675-time-travel.html#sthash.KluUKSxk.dpuf"

when did that affect any twins? communications between the satellites showed some difference, that's all.... still not "proof" that time dilation exists..

Here is as positive proof as can exist. I am not sure why science is that hard to understand. There are almost infinite explanations on the net.

"Yet even as Scott Kelly ages faster biologically, he’ll age more slowly in physical time. The ISS orbits at about 17,000 miles (27,000 km) per hour relative to the Earth’s surface. In an effect of Albert Einstein’s special theory of relativity known as the twin paradox, that means time will pass more slowly for Scott than for his brother, to the tune of about 28 microseconds (millionths of a second) a day.

There’s a counter-effect, too: The ISS is about 250 miles up, where Earth’s gravity is slightly weaker, and where—by Einstein’s general theory of relativity—time runs slightly faster. (Stronger gravitational pull slows time down: If you saw the movie Interstellar, you may remember that each hour the crew spends on a planet near the massive gravity of a black hole seems like seven years to the crew member who stays behind out in space.) But the increase is only about three microseconds a day.

So Scott will become 25 microseconds a day younger than his already six-minute-older brother Mark. Over 342 days, that’s 8.6 milliseconds—a little less than a hundredth of a second. Even added to the extra milliseconds he’s already gained—he’s spent 180 days in space before, to Mark’s 54—it’s not enough, probably, to compensate for all the biological effects of living up there."

For the whole story of the US Astronaut twins, the Kelly brothers, see below ....

If they were all formed from the same rotating disc of matter, they would be expected to line up just like the axis of the spinning planets in our Solar System mostly line up. Some of our planets have had the crap knocked out of them by other planets but not much can knock the crap out of a supermassive black hole.

Last week I went to a Department Store and there was a guy holding the front door open so people with packages could exit. More and more people took advantage of the kind gesture and he just kept standing there. He had family waiting for him to go to their car.

As I got to the front door from the parking lot, I came up behind him and grabbed the door and said "My turn." He turned and smiled and said "Thanks".

returning after coffee break...

Actually we don't know that the fundamental laws are the same everywhere. They just appear the same from what we can see. There is also plenty that we can't see (dark energy, dark matter, and black holes) where the best we can do is make an educated guess. There is also space beyond what we can see where maybe the rules change again

The best example is the expansion of the universe. From what we can see we can measure the speed and distance of the expansion but there is very little understanding of the "why and how". Using dark energy as the fuel for expansion may be correct or it may just be feeling in the dark.

alternate theory with God.
then He could be using us to drive space expansion!!
if He is an Indian God 'they' are like that

God said 'let there be light'
and waited till Newton discovered the spectral game..
then Isaac Newton got into a useless fight with Leibniz
and the game was lost

but then Einstein came up with 'speed of light'
and God said why not!!

so by extrapolation of historical scientific advancements
there's been a two way street going on in this expansion
how else could Bohr dream up planetary orbits for the atom?
so little from so big?

then God used MIT, Cornell & others
came to earth as Carl Sagan wrote a few lines 'kep up the good work men' and then escaped back

the nice thing abt all this is heaven is where we are and He is in hell

now he's watching MetalWing, quite confused about
'dark energy as fuel for expansion'.

"dark energy as fuel?!?" think
"dark energy as FUEL?!?"slaphead

"DARK ENERGY AS FUEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"frustrated

now HE is waiting for light on this!!whoa

meantime JaiGi asks Guru Metal: what is dark energy anyway?what
(there was a thread somewhere, laughed it off; are you serious?)

I'm not sure why you would be head slapping unless you don't understand the theory of dark energy.

One can calculate the time since the big bang using conventional telescopes. One also knows that the speed of light is a fixed constant. The two measured "facts" lead one to understand that the universe, more than once, expanded by stretching space/time itself. The "expansive force" or "fuel" did not come from the original explosion but was within the fabric of the universe itself. Hence this "dark energy" which cannot be seen, felt, or measured directly shows it's existence by the fact that it has pushed galaxies apart at speeds faster than the speed of light (the original explosion could not have done this!).

There have been several threads here on the topic over several years discussing the topic at length.

Here is a six minute youtube lesson on the topic... seriously.

Actually, there is a problem with terminology here. When some science writer writes "30,000 years" it usually means they don't really know what current technology is available. If we loaded a conventional rocket with conventional fuel you get huge number like that. But ion rockets and plasma drives have already been tested by NASA like the VASIMR, not to mention atomic power.

The plasma drive looks like the best bet for really long range flights but if the controllable linear fusion reactor ever gets built, a powerful ion drive would be in the making yet still needing to solve the ion grid erosion problem for really long flights of years.
