Hey Tessa02,
I looked at the link you listed and I bet that's exactly what he's needing to open his csv in a browser. Good stuff. |

Hi totage,
Until someone more knowlegeable shows up, I looked on google and it looks like other people are doing it with various tools. Not sure what platform you use but I looked in my package manager and one of the tools that came up for linux was gnumeric. (it'll export to html) Hope it's a start. |

Overburning

That blu-ray reader looks nice. Way beyond me, man. I'm still using IDE dvd rw. If I ever do take the plunge and get a blu-ray drive, I want to be able to burn with it. I have a blu-ray box hooked up to my tv that has other features, like neckflix. It does all that I need. (as far as I know ;)
I never used a zip drive before. And 900mb on a 700mb disk?! Sounds like some spooky voodoo, man ;) |

Hi RainbowTrout,
Not sure if you'd read this or are already experiencing it on your own; a virtual machine isn't going to provide extra funtionality beyond what's set-up/ active on the host os. For example, one can't start a non-accelerated x session with the free nv nvidia graphics driver and boot a virtual machine and expect to use accelerated graphics in the virtual machine. It just sounded like you could save a lot of time and stress on your box by booting up a solid main os from your sata drive and then load virtual machines stored on the extra space on your other drives. Another part of the beauty of that is if a virtual machine becomes unusable, for whatever reason ;), it's only the virtual machine that's borked. It's easier to delete it and create a new one over re-installing a main os. And, in your case, having to enter bios setup to configure the boot device. (and why not choose an os with a boot loader?) I hope I didn't mislead you. Virtual machines are still fun, aren't they? (I hope you're not disappointed, anyway) Figures you have to be playing with graphics acceleration...sigh ;) |

Mr. RainbowTrout,
Ever played with Virtualbox? If you have landed on, at least, a tentative distro, most have a virtualbox that you can set-up a virtual machine that will pretty much act like the real thing for anything you want to implement. It will save your box from boot n reboot stress. Example; I can start and stop m$dos 6.22 - winxpee from the media that I was licenced to use. I can start n stop linux disros from the 90s - today without partitioning and rebooting, all within my debian linux environment. Don't beat your computer with re-boots. |

React OS-
I hope I don't catch any flak for this but after another quick glimpse of their homepage, I didn't see that they address anything about security. I have to wonder if it will be, at least, as suceptible to malware as the original M$ product? Will the user, still, have to populate resources with virus and malware sniffers/ scanners? Still, it does sound like a fun experiment. Especially for folks that HAVE to have a windohs environment. |

Overburning

FWIW, I don't recall ever having a problem with pushing the limits of maxing out a cd or dvd. Most (all?) newer burners will 'overburn' and most (all?) decent quality media seems to take it without a hiccup. Whether from a downloaded iso or one that I'd whipped up myself.
Best recommendation from this dumdum is to dive in and VERIFY when the burn is done. My guess is that you will be uneventfully surprised that it just works. But, again, VERIFY that your data has populated the new media. And btw, I use k3b pretty much exclusively for burning. (A bloated frontend for linux's basic disk writing tools) Not sure if software has anything to do with it. Good luck and hope it's fun |

It does sound neat. I've been meaning to see if it's a live cd. I typically carry a knoppix with me if I'm doing a diagnostics/ repair. It wouldn't hurt to carry another distro.
Thanks for reminding me ;) |

Kudos for your diligence.
It's a good practice not to trust links in emails. Even if it looks like it came from a known source. One doesn't have to be paranoid. Informed will do. |

Yup, his samsung looks pretty sweet.
My phone is an old motorola flip phone. I guess the most redeeming quality is that it makes a noise to let me know when I have an incoming call. *sigh* Oh, it does have a camera if I want to keep tiny, grainy memories. |

Scary problems with desktop

Is it an acer? I've had two acer laptops in here with powerup woes. If you look on goog, you will find that acers are plagued with strange acpi bios and/or hardware issues that some people claim that bios flashes can fix. I gave the laptops back and told them to take em to a qualified tech. I didn't want the liability of possibly killing them with a bad flash.
I have a third acer laptop that someone gave me because she thought it was broken. (she was gonna crunch it. i said NO! i'll take it) Mash on the power button and power light comes on and looks like it'll boot then craps out. I can get it to boot by taking the battery out and plugging it back in while mashing the power button. It'll run ok for abt a half hour before it starts freakin out with acpi errors. And it's not hot, either. One of these days when I'm bored but ambitious, I'll flash the bios and see what happens. So the thought for you is (after my rambling) is make a partition for linux or, at least, load up a linux live cd and keep an eye on system messages. Even if it isn't an acer it could give you some insight. If it runs fine for some hours with no errors, you might chalk it up to a windohs fail. In that case, you might as well install linux and be done with the windohs silliness. But if you must have windohs, you will know you'll need to re-install. Good luck, man |

damn JAVA UPDATE

It's almost always good to have the latest update for anything. Updates are typically for bug and security fixes.
Does java really update that often on windohs? Just be aware of where your updates are coming from. And while java is important to enjoy the net (and more), globally allowing java script could be a bad thing. Use a browser and/ or plugins that restrict what java script can do and allow by sites and apps that you trust. I like your 'Santa's little helper' avatar. Merry Christmas! |

No intentions of raining on your parade (sounds like you're pretty jazzed about your call) but had you heard of skype? I'm pretty sure that's still free for skype to skype overseas. It's a more mature (and secure?) voip, anyway. Works pretty slick. I talk to my homer gal in VA and it's better than a phone call. And no time limits.
Just a thought. |

finding my pics!

As was mentioned above, you can use search (or find or locate... whatever windohs calls it, now).
What might narrow things down for you is, perhaps, the file extention, if you remember what that was. I'm going to venture a guess that your pics were .jpg images. So, with that in mind, if you start the search function and input *.jpg (the * is a wildcard) search should find every .jpg image on your box. Keep in mind that you might have ALOT of jpg on your box, so it might take a little while. When it's done, you can sort by location and such. In that same vein, if you think your stuff are png pics, you would use *.png for your query and down the line for any file you wish to look for. Keep in mind, also, that before you start the search, if you have absolutely no idea where they might be, you can tell the search function to search your whole hdd. I think it's a drop down box. ie- don't forget to tell the search where to search! (windohs likes stashing one's crap in obscure places) Good luck! |

> pick up tower, carry it over to the window.throw tower out the window
Be forewarned; a friend of mine actually did this once and it attracted the stray neighborhood geeks. She would be awakened several times a night to the sounds of slapping as they fought for the parts. It went on for several nights. Then, not only was there a pile of her old computer, there were bottles of pimple cream, broken glasses, cans of monster and tufts of greasy hair to pick up out of the yard. Know your neighborhood before you try it. |
