Reset your display settings on the old computer! It sounds like you do not have your monitor set for the proper resolution. Start > Control Panel > Display > Settings.
The other machine, sounds like the Hard Drive went bad. You can try this provided you have a Windows XP Professional install disk, Put the disk in your computer, boot from CD ROM. You will have the options to use the repair console (the 'R' Option). Log into the Windows Install you wish to fix, (Usually select #1, it is different for dual boot systems) if there is an administrator password (the one you log into your computer usually) and then type this command and be prepared for it to take about an hour at most in most cases, > chkdsk -r-p < type it in as I wrote it without the > < and hit > Enter <. Also type in > fixboot < and hit enter after you type in this command and hit 'Y' to confirm the command. Restart your computer without the Install disk. It should boot back up but let it take its time restarting. Now in the event this does not work Windows XP Pro has one other Hail Mary to offer. Put the disk back in and restart the computer. When asked if you wish to install XP hit F8 to begin install. it should detect the Windows install already present and it will ask you if you want it to repair the current installation. Hit Y and let it fix itself. Again this is only offered on XP Professional. If you do this be sure to update! Doing a reinstall you will lose data. both versions of restore do not lose data but the second one you MUST update afterwords. |

Thanks Andy.... I will try that, but I was afraid I would lose things on my computer....so as long as I use ''Repair'' I should be okay?

Thanks Andy.... I will try that, but I was afraid I would lose things on my computer....so as long as I use ''Repair'' I should be okay? Repair console first, full blown repair second if the repair console does not work. Again you need the XP professional install disk to do it! XP home does not have the repair feature. It will have the repair console at least but home was badly watered down. One other thing, if you do option 2 you will need to reinstall the product key! At least with repair console you do not have to resort to that. Both ways you do not loose data. Only if you do a "Hard Restore" do you loose data which is essentially resetting the computer to the day it was first started so you loose apps, data, and even specialty device drivers so you have to reinstall everything. A Hard Restore is basically wiping the disk and starting over from scratch. A backup option to this is to buy a new hard drive and install windows on it and set the original hard drive as a slave drive. You will have to go through a process to recover the files so look up "Resetting File Ownership" on the MS website for information. I have resorted to this in cases where Windows was just so overly screwed up it could not be recovered and in cases of imminent hard drive failure. Read up on anything before you attempt to try this out though. It is easy to do if you follow it step by step but the process is done in Safe Mode which is done like this. Turn on the computer, tap the F8 key and you will get a menu. Choose "Safe Mode" and let your computer start up. You will not have internet since the computer only allows the basics to operate and internet connections are locked out. There are a number of things you can do like get data off of the hard drive and on to an external hard drive. Use another computer to confirm the presence of your data. That way if you mess something up you still have your data at least on another source. |

Okay...this screen is fixed, thank you Andy for reminding me about the settings....as I say, computer moron. Common sense things don't apply. I think I am going to wait about the other computer until my nephew comes over and he can help me. |
|
|
|
if it is an operating system problem then have your nephew make
you a puppy linux cd and you will be able to use it from the cd-drive and even save all your critical files to a thumb drive, web surf, and do all sorts of stuff and then you can try to fix windows... it won't hurt anything to try it. |

here's how you fix your other computer
make sure everything is unplugged from the back of it (power cord,mouse,keyboard,monitor...etc),go over and open the window (you're gonna need fresh air for this),pick up tower, carry it over to the window.throw tower out the window then go to your nearest computer store and by a new one.problem solved, hope this helps! |

> pick up tower, carry it over to the window.throw tower out the window
Be forewarned; a friend of mine actually did this once and it attracted the stray neighborhood geeks. She would be awakened several times a night to the sounds of slapping as they fought for the parts. It went on for several nights. Then, not only was there a pile of her old computer, there were bottles of pimple cream, broken glasses, cans of monster and tufts of greasy hair to pick up out of the yard. Know your neighborhood before you try it. |

If you're talking about your browser window, it should have a resize button in the top right hand corner. It is the icon of a cube, and it's between the x and - signs.
