Hummm... may be a good idea where ever you are but within the States that would never happen..

Some Countries need to pay their employees so they can survive..

Many government services provides such. But it's wrong.bwhy people need facilities. don't know.

Back in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century mining companies did provide housing for workers. The houses were little more than shacks, and workers had to buy at "company stores". When they went on strike for better conditions they were kicked out of their homes.

Hm. It's a nice thought, but I doubt it would ever happen.

Although I will say that I have a job (internationally) and in each country I work in my housing is always paid for as a part of my benefits package. It is NICE not having to worry about paying rent or utilities.

Some companies provide transportation for the employees. Some provide housing , depending on the country and also the branch of Government you worked in e.g. armed services etc . But most companies just pay well .... what the employees do with that is strictly up to them ...
in this age a company providing housing , transportation etc is rare and probably never gonna happen ....

motowndowntown is right. In the South it was called "the mill system," which essentially replaced the plantation system. My mom grew up in a town like that in South Carolina. There were about 3000 people there in the 1930's. The mill closed down in 1990 when textile manufacturing went overseas. Now there are less than 100 people there.

Pullman also built a town for his workers when Pullman train cars where a big thing. A bit nicer than what the mill workers and miners were "given" to live in. I believe most of the buildings are still up in the Chicago area.

I agree with this ^^^^^

It'd mean that as long as you work there you got a house. If you change jobs or get fired you're homeless. It makes you vulnerable & dependent.
I rather have my own council home -a rental, mind you- that I can live in no matter what.

There are several organizations that provide housing for their employees, only most of those positions are seasonal/temporary jobs. When the job that lasts 4 to 6 months ends, you have to go find another job with different housing arrangements. Normally it's dormitory housing where you share your room and facilities with others.

Ummm no.
If they did, they could claim that part of your wages go to paying for your living quarters.Say you got hired for a job that paid $20 per hour. With housing included, count on them to tell the government that you're making $25 an hour, putting you one spot for paying income tax for your housing.

Don't show up for work? Out you go. Count on them to set up their housing for employees agreement in such a way that it wouldn't fall into any tenant protection laws that are currently in place.

Do you want to be put into that situation? You'd be putting yourself at the mercy of your employer.They could cut your wages, then claim you're not working hard enough. You could get fired, and booted out of your living quarters in one day.

You'd better rethink your idea.

All in all I guess for us westerners it's different, for reasons mentioned.
The OP, however, lives in Papua New Guinea's capital, and that country is very poor and the capital very unsafe with very high crime rates.
So I suppose in that situation company housing would be an upgrade, possibly even include a little more safety as well?

Depending upon the company and the position of your employment some actually do provide housing, cars, personal jets/airplanes, yachts and memberships to clubs.

The US military provides housing and food allotments for qualified service members. When I was in (1981-1988) it was called BAQ/COMRATS.

The company I worked for provided money for boots, tools and sometimes transportation, not to mention holiday bonuses and company picnics. Plus a salary based on the local economy.

POTUS gets a house, cars, airplane and escorts in addition to their salaries. Plus, many other perks.

Sports players often get perks of houses, cars and clubs in addition to bonuses and hefty salaries.

Some companies provide adequate salaries/wages for all workers based on economic location. This in turn gives the workers the ability to pay housing, transportation and entertainment themselves.

The perks you get from the company you work for is often directly related to the position of employment you hold while working there. The higher up the food-chain you go, the more perks available to you.

Wow that sure is a lot of perks ..... all I got was an expense account and I never ran it up to the limit .. dang ! But no complaints ... it was nice while it lasted !!!

When you're shooting on location both (local and international) everything is covered and provided for including airfare, accomodation, all meals, a driver etc... But, the hours are so long on set that some of the perks are never really felt or redeemed.

So True...
No matter the perks, if you can't appreciate them...useless.

If your company gives you a mansion and an estate with a pool a garden and such. The work(cost) to maintain it may be so great it can't be enjoyed.
