You must have lived in a pretty affluent area, never traveled much, or had a good set of blinders on.

Just looking across the Rio Grande in West Texas, I could see that living conditions were particularly poor, dispite the border towns being the home of many assembly plants, factories and such.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that if people are coming from all over Mexico to secure one of these "Well paying" jobs, and willing to live in a makeshift shelter, with no running water, sewage system, or electricity, in a heavily populated shante town... that the places they come from are probably worse.


Even in resorts like Cancun, many of the tourism workers are paid 4 dollars a day for 12 hour days, 6 days a week. They spend 80 dollars a month to rent a hut amongst many huts made of pallets, cardboard and tin, complete with a community toilet that just runs into a ditch and corrupts the ground water.

Tijuana, just 12 miles from downtown San Diego has a heavy population living in some of the worst urban living conditions in the world. All very visible from the border crossing and open air market. You just need to look up and west.

My Grandmother was married to a Mexico Ambassador in the 80's.. They lived in one of the upper floors of the high rises of Mexico City, within walking distance of the U.S embassy. You'd have to be blind to not see the overcrowding and substandard living areas...Just outside the suburbs, from any angle of their 360 degree view.
