Consent is consent. There are ******* out there who will gladly have sex with a man they know will be charged under this dumb law and then report him for statutory rape. It's ridiculous that you can be 18 and have sex with a 17-year-old the day before they turn 18 and be charged with statutory rape. I am just giving an example since the ages for this law vary everywhere.

People who work in the legal system love saying "Oh, they're too young to make such a big decision for themselves, they can't consent..." WTF?! So they can't consent to have sex, but at age 14 they can have an abortion and the people working at the clinic won't even tell their parents??? IT'S DISGUSTING!!!!!

there are a lot of inconsistent laws here, I have asked the same question

not because I don't believe children need to be protected, but because I see an inconsistency in the messages we tell them that their sexuality is natural and normal and defined at a young age (born that way),

but that they don't really have the maturity to handle this 'natural and normal and well defined' part of their identity,,

but they are mature enough to handle a decision about abortion without parental involvement

and its ok and natural and expected for them to have 'safe' sex with each other, but its not ok to have 'safe' sex with those who are above a certain age,,

I believe children are sexualized far too young and the mixed message does a lot to contribute to confusion

either they are sexual or they are not,, we can not keep pretending its both ways,,,

That there is part of the problem. A person that young shouldn't be able to go through a selective medical procedure without that person's legal guardians knowing about it beforehand.

Quite frankly, the preceding rant against age-of-consent laws isn't, in my opinion, wise.

Hey, Mandy!!flowerforyou
Missed ya much!!

I have a 17 year old stepdaughter that opened her legs to a 20 year old adult.

Her Mamma did nada.

She and his ex old lady are knocked up now. They'll probably be sharing the room in the maternity ward.

No, statutory rape shouldn't be a crime. Should be charged with rape.

Mature adults don't fck children.

Well you would be both right and wrong, let's start with right. This is a legal and not a lawful matter. Under lawful the state has no say in the matter especially where they subjugate the rights of the parent. But then, there is the birth certificate.

Wrong, it is a moral issue that revolves around the age of consent. Until that age is reached, it is a matter for the parents. Without their permission you would be liable for a civil, not criminal action.

So the moral of the story is, if you dupe someone's daughter and she is under age, their could be a shotgun ceremony in your future or they could own your horse.

Yep, lack of parental responsibility, might as well start them on the ole entitlement bandwagon early.

Quite frankly, the preceding rant against age-of-consent laws isn't, in my opinion, wise.

It may seem sensible to outlaw abortion in those cases, but history shows us that when we tried that, it didn't stop that many abortions, and didn't inform that many parents. Often, it just forced the 14-year-olds to lie and seek illegal, back-alley abortions. Leaving them permanently injured or even dying.

How about fixing the educational system, first, where we stop leaving the children to learn about sex from their peers or even uneducated adults who make believe that they can always just say "no", which is only the most quaint, innocent misconception being spread in some places.

I think we need a combination of preventive (laws and education) and reactive (consequences)

I say we move illegal abortion procedures done on minors to a CAPITAOL offense, you take a life (illegally) you lose yours

see how many it stops then

we continue to push for abortions on minors(like any other surgical procedure) to require parents consent

we do more to teach minors why they are so often not prepared or ready to handle sex, let alone handle abortions, and expose them to other forms of 'satisfaction' and belonging to fill that need,,,,,

I might if I had anything about it to apologize for. As it is, I helped save the country from the presidencies of John McCain and Mitt Romney.

You're welcome.

Nobody's being taught to be gay. That's not something you learn, anyway. Maybe you should get out more.

Sex education is important, though. Again, the "just say no" message, or even worse, the notion that women can simply keep their knees together indefinitely in order to keep from getting pregnant has never been effective beyond some anecdotes. There are now some communities (absent formal sex ed courses) where people believe that girls cannot get pregnant on their first try, or cannot get pregnant if they do not climax. You can Google for the dozens or hundreds of other misconceptions that have been discovered.

i guess you missed that thread...
but your right on this, the republicans, like the ones here in Texas, put religion in front of these issues, which hinders teaching kids things they should know...
religion hides a lot of truths, like the ones your talking about...

I know someone that happened to and they have to register as a sex offender. He was 18 at the time, she was 16 and they were both in High School.

It's complete BS

Sure that has always worked so well in the past, let's just make more laws letting us know that the past laws aren't being enforced so maybe this new batch will do better.

Education, that marvelous indoctrination system that has produced such a splendid crop of adults that have trouble pouring piss from a boot even with the instructions on the bottom. But of course we haven't done an outstanding job yet, so let's try "common core".

And what would lead us to believe that those that haven't learned to handle sex themselves in a responsible manner can teach anything. The best teacher is one of example and the entitlement crown sets such a great example.
