I have to believe the whole point of this is to insure the federal dollars, which happens to come from people paying taxes not the special government money tree that some seem to think exists,is actually going to buy food or whatever is necessary to help poor families.

Someone using these resources to fund their meth or crack habit is obviously taking away these resources from their kids or whomever.

Anyone that thinks this type of behavior is beneficial to society or children needs to have their head examined.

This is YOUR government, that you all love so much and think they should be dictating how we all live.

I find it very ironic that when its perceived overreaching has a direct impact on something you support you are up in arms..

War on the poor.. War on women..

Its like.. HEY YOU DUMBA$$ES THAT ACTUALLY PAY INCOME TAXES GO F^^K YOURSELVES BECAUSE WE GOT THE RIGHT TO DO WHAT WE WANT WITH THE GOVERNMENTS MONEY..

This country is bizarre.. and twisted

Yes it is.

Lol Ron Paul..

This is a great way to "weed" out those deserving of a handout as opposed to the other slackers who are even lazier. Great way to keep taxes down as well. Anyone so quick to defend the welfare class should go under the bridge and spend time with them. They sell their EBT for .50 on the dollar, they use their handout for pills and such, they basically don't care about improving themselves as long as the Liberal Government keeps supporting them. That's MY money they're blowing, hell yes test their lazy butts.

You laugh at Paul, I welcome you to mingle anyway, and totally agree with your statement as I have worked with those "under the bridge" people. Many are veterans sadly, unable to cope, allowed to slip thru the cracks of society.

'round these parts people used to sell the paper food stamp coupon books two for one

as in two food stamp dollars are equal to one dollar. so the government issued "credit cards" and put the money in an account

now people shop with the person, use the card, and collect the cash. it's an inconvenience to both, but it continues. as long as people are willing to trade cash for stamps, it will continue. the drug testing may slow the trade down momentarily, but i guarantee i guarantee some douche will come up with a loophole

the same goes for the store owners...

Florida and Kentucky the first states that will require drug testing when applying for welfare, effective July 1st!

Some people are crying this is unconstitutional.

How is this unconstitutional?

It's OK to drug test the people who work for their money but not those who don't?

Re-post if you want all states to do this.

My question is this: what is unconstitutional about it?

private employers have the OPTION to drug test as a way to weed out those who will be working with their 'customers'

its a different scenario than those who are supposed to be HELPING people with financial need,,,,

its unconstitutional because welfare is a government program, it is government money and it is a way of discriminating against one group of recipients of government money as opposed to ALL recipients of government money,,,it could be considered illegal search

but perhaps we will follow suit by ordering RANDOM alcohol testing of all people driving on (government funded) roads,,,,testing that will be required to be PAID FOR by those randome folks,,,,,

we shouldn't discriminate against criminals?...

I do not know what the hurrah is all about because my GF is a social worker and if your in treatment for drug addiction you get better benefits than welfare. So expect those who get welfare also to declare they are also drug addicts adding more financial cost to the state than the mere handout.

Many of her recovering or relapsing clients get medical care, dental and seboxin they turn around and sell to other addicts.

No easy answer here folks besides a good economy that provides meaningfull employment.

Paul may make history, but not quite current history yet.

I worked with vets for a couple years. Many thru the soup kitchens and shelters. Not all are vets, but many of them.

And you are right, most there by choice or circumstance. Many with what today we call PTSD, and just didn't fit when they came home.

They don't deserve to be looked down on, and they don't want pity or help (Psychiatric), they just want to be left alone... or paid.

I don't look down on them, but I don't pity the homeless either. They have opportunity and options to better themselves through education, job training and such. Ronald Reagan said it best when he said they are homeless by choice. Hmmm maybe I DO look down on them. Why do veterans declare they will die for this country yet return only to live by the bottle? Some, not all, mind you. Why do people say they are poor yet they continue to have kids they can't feed? Why did they drop out of school? Oprah Winfrey was asked why she doesn't help people here like she does in Africa. Her answer? "BECAUSE THERE IS OPPORTUNITY IN AMERICA". Can't argue with that even if she is a Liberal.

The armed forces are drug tested, the postal workers are drug tested, teachers, veterans...

So you think welfare people have a right greater than these.... slaphead

GET REAL! Guess they'll have to start feeding and clothing the kids instead of buying drugs!

If I use logic, I Can quickly understand the significance of making sure postal workers (who deal in important documents), teachers(who deal with our most precious commodity), and veterans (who are contracted to represent their country) all have reason to remain 'sober'

not to mention, the greater loss of money if people in these 'professions' would cause by underperformance or malperformance of their jobs

none of this applies to those receiving federal funds to LIVE by,,,,,

Yeah, screw them stinkin disabled vets like me who are screened regularly, and don't even draw free money!

I am not sure what you refer to, I have brother, cousin and uncle who served/are serving and I know nothing of them having mandatory drug screens,,,,,unless you are referring to something required of veterans who are ON some type of therapy or medicinal regimen to make sure they arent ABUSING or MIXING any other substances?

At least every 6 months to a year, the VA does blood and urine tests.
They check for everything including illicit drugs.
Real vets would know this.

PS.
If the law is unconstitutional, you'd better clue in Kentucky, Florida and whatever other states choose to pass screening.

Show them Constitutional proof to your claim.

a welfare recipient with one child receives 300 dollars per month cash and 300 dollars per month food, they have to provide to a caseworker EACH WEEK documentation that they have spent what is the equivalant of AT LEAST A PART TIME JOBS WORTH of hours applying to work, or participating in work somewhere that is not for profit

they DO NOT receive the cash benefit without proof of these efforts AND they are not likely to be able to complete those requirements if they are 'abusing' drugs

if they are in housing, the requirements are even more strict, along with the work or work related activities, they are required to post ANY household changes in residency of income within five to ten days or be PERMANENTLY EVICTED FOREVER,,,,there is regular SECURITY And METRO patroling and reporting any 'suspicious' activity they observe and reporting it to an office that can also use that information ot immediately and PERMANENTLY EVICT the tenant

,someone blitzed on drugs would also not be likely to handle those responsibilities

the argument is mostly from those who dont have a clue what is required of most welfare recipients

its probably no more unconstitional than FORCING people to either buy health insurance or pay a penalty

or to purchase car insurance or pay a penalty

and so it will probably stand,, I Agree

I just feel its a waste of money, defeating the whole point of the argument that supposedly is raised about giving money away to addicts....

I totally agree, I dont do drugs, yet I find it offensive that those who need assistance must go through testing to receive it

I dont smoke pot, but I find it offensive that alcohol and tobacco are so widely accepted while pot is illegal

I usually sit at the back of a bus, but I would find it offensive if it was REQUIRED And the choice taken from me

,,,,people shouldnt be doing drugs, they also shouldnt be singled out for drug testing because they receive government money unless ALL groups who receive government money are required to do the same testing,,,

It's actually not the Gov. helping people.
It's the Tax Payer footing the bill.
If, the ones paying the taxes want more folks to take responsibility for their lives, they have a right to demand measures be taken so the "help" is going to someone who will eventually work their way up and out.
Drug users don't show the initiative to help themselves.
If, they want to quit, give them a one-time Tax Payer assisted treatment.
Fail twice, kick to the curb. Tough love. No hate at all.

Hating someone is when you want them dependent on you. Then, you have the control.

I wish I could have video taped an old friend of mine from out of state that came down here a few months ago, to visit for a couple of weeks. We took his truck to go somewhere, he wanted to drive, well he drove 15 to 20 miles an hour on US 1 through Daytona Beach in a 32-40 MPH zone. When I asked why he was going so slow, he stated, "I'm on vacation, I am not in a hurry". (Never heard of obstructing traffic). Then he took a left turn in an intersection from the lane that is supposed to be for going straight north, and almost got me T-boned. Found out my friend is a "pot-head" and was stoned.

Now comes Sunday when he asked to use my computer, seems he had to file his claim for unemployment benefits for the 2 weeks he was here.

So, let me say this, I KNOW he did not look for work, the money he gets, part of it goes to support his pot habit. So, don't tell me with the "government" requirements, that they all are telling the truth. Just like everything else the government handles, it is all screwed up and it cost the taxpayers more than if it were handled in the private sector. They don't verify this data. Come on now! If they did they wouldn't have a need to be a government worker, they would not have any clients.....LOL

@willing2, you got that right, the government wants you to be dependent on them, just what Obozo is all about, the "Hitler Dark".
Control the people! Hand outs for everyone! Give me give me give me!
That is just how my guest thinks. What can he do for me?

I prefer the Chinese Proverb; Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. Chinese Proverb ...

Y'all better learn how to fish, because we have run out of money! Homelessness and unemployment still abound.
