How so? The right to vote comes with you being a citizen. If you're a registered citizen, then you have a SS#. What certain groups are you referring to?

Are the pros and cons concerning voter ID party based?....Is it an issue about illigals (Texas)...Is it an issue because we have a multiracial president?....Is it an issue because 2012 is an election year and in '08 Obama received 67% of the Latino vote and 96% of African American vote? Are the "certain" groups you refer to the poor, the elderly, the Hispanics, and the African Americans?...I'm curious and confused.... |

I watched an interesting discussion on this topic last night on PBS. Two law professors debated the topic.
The conclusion was that the current case with Texas rests on intent. If the purpose of the Texas law is to discriminate against people of a certain race, the law will be overturned. If the purpose of the law is to prevent voter fraud, which every State has the right to do, the law "should" be upheld. It was acknowledged that politics will play some part. |

Sounds fair to me Joe...I applaud Texas for stepping up.....Peeps will always find ways to cheat, but voter fraud can and should be corrected/eliminated to the point that there is not enough to influence results....There are already too many people who don't vote, one reason is because they believe their vote won't make a difference....One reasons they believe this is VOTER FRAUD..... |

How so? The right to vote comes with you being a citizen. If you're a registered citizen, then you have a SS#. What certain groups are you referring to? yes, and id is verified AT registration,, beyond that it requires people spend MONEY to ensure they CONTINUE being able to vote once registered,,,which disenfranchises those who are less likely to have id's that are updated and valid for every election,,,,, seniors and minorities and the impoverished,,, |

Are the "certain" groups you refer to the poor, the elderly, the Hispanics, and the African Americans?...I'm curious and confused.... no, ID is not a 'requirement' , noones been fined or incarcerated for not possessing id unless it was a requirement for some type of ACTIVITY to verify being of legal age,,etc however, voting is not merely an ACTIVITY, it is a 'right', so beyond having proof that one is of age to be REGISTERED as a voter,, requiring proof of the RIGHT to vote at EVERY election would be unconstitutional it is an issue because it has not been a REQUIREMENT UNTIL , this election,, making it seem like the real issue may just be because of who is running, and who is supporting him,,,,, and yes, those groups are the poor, the elderly, hispanics, african americans,,,,,,people who are less likely to be UPDATING their id (something which has a FEE) on a regularly bi yearly basis it is a smokescreen and a pointless undertaking kind of like drug testing welfare recipients would be,,,because it is more of an INVESTMENT Than what it saves those dishonest enough to commit voter fraud are certainly dishonest enough to obtain a FAKE ID<, its very easy in this country,,,, the remedy is ENFORCING the LAWS when fraud is uncovered, not disenfranchising millions from voting,,, |

Correct, voting is a right for citizens only.... |

It also manages to cancel out thousands of votes of legitimate citizens who have a RIGHT to have their votes counted. How convenient. |

How convenient. convenient is right, convenient way to once again discriminate at the polls. like when they required people to pass certain 'tests' to vote,,,,before the voting rights act research voter fraud numbers and its not at all the issue those rooting for this disenfranchise are pushing others to feel panicked about and when it happens, it is prosecuted as the 'crime' it is whats next, requiring children to show id everytime they go to class AFTER already showing it when they register for school? |

It has never cost me to change my voter registration.

It has never cost me to change my voter registration. it costs to renew or update a photo id... |

Yea, but like $20 for 4 years. Seems like just about anyone could come up with $5 a year.

Making up "facts" and changing the subject does not improve your argument. The State of Texas provides: How can I apply for a free election ID certificate? Visit a Texas Driver License office and request a free election ID certificate for the purpose of voting. Voters must provide: 1. Proof of identity. 2. A completed application. 3. Consent to be photographed and fingerprinted. 4. A signature. So your statement of "which means people would be required to continue spending money to do something that is supposed to be a 'right'" is just baloney. It's all about getting votes any way you can, legal or not. |
