it is a word EASILY taken as defamatory when used as an ADJECTIVE for anything other than an actual HOMOSEXUAL PERSON....

I was just thinking about those commercials saying to think before you use the word gay, like "that is so gay" because it's offensive. There is a new one out about using the work retarded the same way.

I think these are the reasons they objected to the shirt.

The couple wasn't kicked out of the park. The park was just trying to keep any controversy (from whoever) away so families could enjoy the park as it's meant to be.

It's a business and they have a right to decide what would be offensive or not. Just like here. There is no way a place could list every exact offensive slogan or whatever, so it's at the discretion of the business. Sometimes it's just a judgement call. Not a personal one.

The controversy can come from how someone takes the shirt's meaning. Someone (gay or straight) could take it as the commercials are saying not to use the word.

Plain and simple...it's the business' choice. No one was kicked out. They just want a peaceful, enjoyable place for families.

It's funny this topic came up. A friend from high school just posted he is seeing Dolly and enjoying it.

perhaps a shirt that said I am gay or proud to be gay,, something that SELF identified,, would be less offensive

but MARRIAGE IS GAY, is using an adjective to describe marriage and could easily be taken to mean marriage is stupid,,etc,

when/if we are trying to teach children to be sensitive to bullying and name calling, its inconsistent to expect them to see adults with such a shirt and understand the message of 'thinking' before they speak,,,

Judging by some of the comments in this thread alone, I doubt a shirt that says "I am gay" would be less offensive.

Personally I hate stupid people who are so offended by stupid things.

So, seeing something you consider stupid can change your opinion of equal rights and consideration for all types of people? This is an uncommon occurrence, but even if it were an hourly event, you think you (or anyone else) have the right to deny people equality?



Considering its location, I have no doubt you can find hundreds of Jesus shirts on a daily basis and at least a couple crucifixion depictions. I see them around here all the time. I find that inappropriate for children (then again, I find all religion inappropriate for children since they cannot think critically for themselves).

BTW, my daughter is five and saw a picture of a couple friends of mine kissing the other day. She asked "why are those girls kissing"? I was honest and said matter-of-factly, "some boys like boys and some girls like girls." Her response was "oh, ok" and she went back to playing with her toys.

Instead of covering their eyes, why not be honest and treat it like its normal (because it is) and then we won't be offended by silly t-shirt slogans.

just as easy for her to wear a normal shirt and quit whining...she got to see dollywood, and no harm was done...dress codes are for a reason, to keep the peace if not for anything else... people have been shot just for wearing a certain colors, and i'm sure in middle Tennessee there might be a hick or two that might less tolerant than others over that...

Nope they are stupid too. Thicker skin is the solution, not all of us hiding from reality so as not to get offended, or worse legislating the game of hide and dont seek.

get tougher skin could be the answer to anything that offends anyone, and we could just live in a growingly insensitive culture

or we could continue to promote SOME type of sensitivity to the feelings of others and the 'innocence' of kids

a gay person , could take offense to a shirt saying some THING (marriage, basketball, politics) is 'GAY'

they would have NO way of knowing the particular preference of the person wearing the shirt so that is irrelevant

and could still be offended even knowing , just like my homosexual relatives dont like to hear homosexuals call people fag/queer,,,,etc,,,

I dont care, part of being in public is growing a thicker skin and not getting your undershort all in a twist. Everyone has a right to be offended, but we shouldnt walk around telling poeple to turn there offensive material inside out.

I believe a business has the right to enforce whatever policies they want on private property and I have the right to not give a S__T, or to show my irritation by not spending my money there.

First, I'd say a brief conversation would clear that up, if it weren't obvious. Second, I'd say that, gay marriage being the issue it is right now, no gay person would likely misconstrue the meaning of that particular slogan.

That's just me (and the handful of gay people I know), though.

Really, I applaud people who could care less one way or the other, I have nothing but contempt for people who are easily offended.
