Topic: Is the USA a "Christian Nation?" | |

There seems to be a belief in this country that the USA is a "Christian Nation"; and that the "Founding Fathers" were Christians led by GOD for the establishment of the USA. Is any of this true?

The USA is probably predominatly Christian, so i imgaine that part is true. Its probably one of the biggest downfalls of the nation - too many short-sighted religious nutjobs.

It was founded by christians who promised freedom of religion, but apparently not FROM religion. |

USA was founded on the ideas of the Enlightenment. While the US is a christian nation because its citizens are predominately Christian it does not have a state religion or anything like that.

Is any of this true? it isn't just in your country.....other countries find the 'fundamentalist, evangelistic, fervent christian obsession' of the US to be predominant also... |

It seems there are quite a few people in the US who believe being a Christian makes them superior to others. Of course making them want the whole country to then be "superior" too.
This is a misconception. Christians are not the creators of this country nor are they the moral majority here. They just believe they are. You will find that more people are of the agnostic view point than are devout Christians but when asked, they are afraid to deny that which brings fear so they claim to be Christian. |

Yes. It is true that there is a belief like that in this country.

Yes, it is true. Our justice system grew out of the judeo/christian belief system and depended upon the belief in God to the degree that a man would not place his hand on a Bible, swear to tell the truth, and then lie in court. Most of our laws are spinoffs of that belief system. However, groups such as the Puritans and the Quakers knew well of persecution so one of the founding tenants of our Bill of Rights is the freedom of Religion. A citizen was free to worship (or not) as he saw fit. By contrast, review some Islamic laws to see how much difference there is. |

Of course our courts here in Denver do not require the bible or the swearing to god anymore because they realized that it is a violation of church and state as is alot of the religion that still exists in our government. It should be fixed soon, hopefully. |

..altho one would be hard pressed not to say that man's laws were basically conceived from the bible..can one see the hypocrisy of it all..the fundamentals were laid and the two can never logically be separated.. |

Well, we aren't necessarily a christian nation. The preamble of the Declaration of Independence is a prime example.
"We hold these truths to be self evident. That all men are created equal, endowed by their creator..." The idea of using "creator" instead of "god" was actually heavily debated at the time. Scientific minds, such as Franklin and Jefferson, opposed the idea of using the word "god" in such an important document. |

yeah, I dont think our government is formed by religious law specifically,,, like muslim countries are by the Qu' ran.
However, I do think its likely that whomever is in the MAJORITY will probably refer to their own ideals and values when making decisions or voting. That being said, being a 'democracy' which is predominately christian, it is fair to say in theory that it is a christian nation even though it is made up of so much more than christians. In the same sense that this is a country of predominately 'white' citizens, although we are made up of much more than just white. The laws and regulations are going to MOSTLY reflect those priorities and ideals shared by the majority. |

i believe the bible was written to instill man a set of "moral laws" that he can use for his own judgment. the country was based on these laws, then it deteriorated into laws being formed for peoples stupidity, then they found they could make money off of laws, and thats where we are now.

How can you say that it's not sponsoring any religion if they are using a "Bible"? That is a clear indication that they are promoting the Bible as having some sort of 'valid' connection to "god". |

Most of the Founding Fathers were Christian, HOWEVER some were Deists, believing in God, not necessarily as described by the predominate churches of the time. Europe was entangled with the Church running the affairs of State, and Kings trying to run the Church.
It was as much freedom to worship as one saw fit, as well as freedom from the power of a specific church in the affairs of Gov. It is a delicate balance. |
