Topic: Racial Profiling In Arizona?

When someone can tell me how you "reasonably suspect" a person of being an alien as written in the law without being discriminatory or racially biased then we can end the whole thing.

it's been answered 100 times, you don't read it...you seem to think the cops will be going on a "mexican" hunt... no, they will just ask people if they are legal to be here. simple, aint it?

In 1968 I was told I would have carry ID to show Law Enforcement.State ID and a Draft Card. In 1969 They took my Draft Card at R and O.
I've been stopped while driving, the only thing that has changed since 1966 is now you have to show a Photo Drivers License and Proof of Insurance.
If I don't have my License with me he doesn't say have a nice day and send me down the road. I have to a least prove who I am before he gives me my ticket.
Lets take a short poll here. Who thinks the cop should let me just drive away. Who thinks the cop should verify who I am.

Yep. I agree with you. Almost everywhere you go you have to provide some form of legal id. Asking law enforcement officials to pay more attention to the signs of an illegal is nothing to what ALL of us have to deal with at one time or another.

For example...Anyone ever tried to file for Social Security benefits or disabilty benefits or food stamps or housing? The proof and paperwork regardless of race is overwhelming. BUT we all do what we have to do to help stop criminals from abusing the system. So asking for additional proof when citizenship is in question, I just don't see it as problem. An inconvenience, at best.

The difference I see, is that when going to file for some type of benefit, you have the CHOICE to be filing and you have the information ahead of time with the reasons why. You need Identification for benefits purposes so the government can keep an accounting of who is receiving benefits. The government does a census to keep track of the numbers of people and they dont ask to see id for that. If I have cash and wish to purchase gasoline, I dont need id for that. There is a context that makes id a reasonable request and I dont feel that just being in the US is the right context to mandate such a thing. I dont want to be in a police state PROVING who I am anytime I step outside my home, that is far more than an inconvenience,, in my opinion.

remember that when the criminals break into your house and steal everything you own.. OR WORSE... it could have been prevented had the police seen his id....but since you feel that they should be just let go, they are free to continue on with there crimes.

I dont believe seeing someones ID will stop them from committing a crime, so I am not sure where that ties in. I am only stating that 'reasonable suspicion' can potentially lead to unjust harassment....look at professor gates,,,,how many robberies do you know where the person has ID matching the address of the house and is carrying LUGGAGE?,,,,, I think requests for ID should not be mandatory for pedestrians or passengers when a name and social security number will suffice.

yea, i don't know all the details to that, all i heard was white cops harass black man, then i turned it off. that's an everyday statement out here, and every crook says it. crying wolf, and when it really does happen people are less respondent to it.

but anyway, it won't suffice because still, they can lie and say i don't know my SS number. and what are the cops supposed to do then? i'm not sure why you think it's harassment, i used to think like that to, thinking they were acting like nazi's, which sometimes i still do, but it's all for the honest people like you, they do what they have to do to protect you.

much like you feel about harassment accusations often being 'crying wolf', similarly I feel the old 'doing it for your good' excuse doesnt cut mustard either.

mexicans in flordia? i thought it was cubans there...

flordia has a big immigrant problem as well, but it's a little different... when an immigrant makes it to the land, they are allowed to stay, but if the coast gaurd catches them at sea, they are sent to back where they came from.

As posted in another thread...

Sooooo tired of hearing the "racial profiling" card. Does racial discrimination and profiling occur. Not only yeah but H*** yeah! The fact of the matter is:

ANY law or bill, past or present can be interpreted to be a type of profiling. Or turn to profiling after its been in place for a while. We cannot predict the future. Nobody is immune. We cannot avoid passing laws and bills because of the "possibility" of misuse. Its an unreasonable position.

Let's just put the damned cards on the table, okay ... ? The AZ law PROHIBITS 'profiling'. It is MODELED on the FEDERAL law that 'The UN' REFUSES to ENFORCE. This leaves the state no choice but to enforce it on its own.

As for the buzz-term 'profiling' ... So effin' WHAT ... ? 'Profiling' is a legitimate LAW ENFORCEMENT procedure. It's used all the time when you FLY ... it's used by TSA. They finally got smart and adopted the ISRAELI profiling procedures. But that's okay, huh? That's catchin' terrorists. Well, DUH ... ! Just WHO do you think are comin' across our borders with the other ILLEGALS? They're catching foreign nationals classified as 'OTM' - 'Other Than Mexican'. They've already captured Syrians, Iranians, Iraqis, Yemenis, Saudis, etc etc crossing at the same spots the Mexican illegals use. 'Profiling' is needed (and I could care less if you like it or not) to capture CRIMINALS and FOREIGN NATIONALS who should NOT be in this country. If they're Mexican and they're here illegally - I don't care. Round 'em up and ship 'em out. If they're criminals, they get jail. Better yet, ship 'em to Nancy Pelossini's office ...

The long and short of it is that the AZ law prohibits profiling - and I don't think it matters one damned bit if it's used AFTER the fact when someone's stopped for a PRIMARY offense. More power to the cops in AZ ...

illegal immigrants are not just crossing the border illegally, the classification also applies to those who have come here LEGALLY but allow their papers to expire,,,

you cant legally drive without a permit/license period,, so asking someone who is DRIVING for proof of this privilege would be much more reasonable than asking a pedestrian or passenger to produce physical identification of who they are.

I am all for racial profiling because it works!Half of the criminals the police catch is because they fit a certain type of personality and look that nearly always leads to a arrest.

not really, drug use in this country correlates with racial composition, yet minorities are up to FOUR times more likely to be searched for and arrested for drugs,,,

one third of 'criminals' are NEVER caught and the two thirds that are usually are picked out of a LINE up created after the victim DESCRIBES the crime they witnessed ,,,,blind racial profiling really doesnt have an impressive track record,,,,and a pretty sad statement on the so called 'liberty' the nation claims to pride itself on,,,

I have never been a cop but when I was younger I was seriously thinking about becoming a police officer and for two years I would come down to the police station and go for ride alongs in the police cars once a month or so and go out on patrol with these police officers.I can tell you right now those officers I used to ride around with could look at a person standing on a corner and tell me exactly what kind of criminal record they had with out even knowing their name. You could count on Blacks and Hispanics always causing trouble no matter what neighborhood you were in.You could go into a all black or all hispanic neighborhood and half of those people living there had warrants for their arrest.I could hardly say the same thing for white neighborhoods.

I know you don't want to hear it but the reality is that Blacks and Hispanics are responsible for the majority of crime in America.Yes this bill is about profiling because it is hispanics that are responsible for the majority of crime in Arizona. It is common sense that the more illegal hispanics you deport from Arizona the more the crime rate will go down.I really don't think anyone cares if this is about profiling or if it is fair because the majority of these people want the illegals out of America as soon as possible.

racists may not want to hear it, but MOST crime in america is committed WITHIN races and not amongst them. So if you are a white person you are more likely to encounter a white criminal and if you are a black person you are more likely to encounter a black criminal, and then there are those like me who have been assaulted TWICE by white males,, so I guess race and crime isnt as clear cut as people want to pretend,,,,

what does correlate to crime moreso than race is poverty and education,,,very few incarcerated have finished school or held a job,,,,,perhaps people should focus more on our educational system and our economy instead of passing blame off on something as shallow as race,,,,
