I would say men because ,culturally, women are more likely to be TRAINED to think of others first, to care for siblings and friends and family members, and therefore less likely to have an 'all about me' attitude.

Is this TRAINING primarily from society, family, religion...etc? Is a fear of commitment do to lack of training?

Primarily from all those things. I think it is due to a serious lack of training.

I've run across very few, of either gender, who WEREN'T afraid of commitment.

Most of the women I've known seem to feel that "commitment" necessarily requires "fixing" the guy -- whether he's in need of repair or not. That's been an obstacle for me many times -- how am I supposed to "commit" to someone who can't commit to me as myself?

Usually it's not so much fear of commitment, they're just not into you. When someone actually likes you, they make time for you, no matter what. It's easier to say he/she is afraid of commitment because it hurts less than admitting they don't give a damn about you personally.

I think its very possible for someone to care deeply about another, even love them, but be scared of giving up the 'freedoms' of single living. It does seem, for some reason, that when relationships go into the commitment stage, peoples expectations change and that could scare people away from it. The idea of 'lets not mess up a good thing' is understandable when people are enjoying 'just dating'.

I have always embraced marriage and commitment, but after this last failure, I am more interested in having a REAL friendship for a change. Once I find that, I may be a bit hesitant to try and make it a committed relationship, even though ideally I think friends make the best lovers.

It isn't gender based, hell, a lot of the time it is probably just miscommunication...but **** all with communication anymore, this is why I don't think relationships can work anymore. Nobody bothers to talk about anything, rather just jump to the nearest assumption and bug out...of course I also find it funny that a bunch of single people are trying to find out which gender has commitment issues, something I've always found funny about singles sites.

It is, more than likely, without a shadow of doubt in my mind...communication.

I don't think it's a gender thing ... It depends on the person and what that person has gone through.

I also agree with Calleigh when she said it also could be disinterest. But then again, I don't think i'd tell them
I had a fear of commitment. I would just tell them I didn't like them.

It's not the commitment that people are afraid of...it's the potential break up and heart ache that scares them.

I get the point, sometimes we confuse dislike for fear. I would guess most "commitment phobes" arent afraid at all. They just prefer living their own single life.

Bah, BS. It's all about who you are commiting to. Anyone will commit to what they consider to be the "ideal."

Actually the older I have gotten I don't think it is per-say a gender thing anymore. I feel if one finds the right one they would be more then willing to commit with that person. And when the spark is not there that more are willing to admit that now days and are not jumping into relationships.

Yup. I agree. But some are set on finding fault in anyone, to avoid the difficulties involved in building a relationship, maitaining a relationship, and the potential pain that comes with a break-up. Gender makes no difference.
