I am out in farm country, not the city, so it is perfectly legal for me to fire a shotgun in my front yard. And I agree dogs can be retrained; however, if they are attacking, then you have to deal with the attack first.

Dont shoot the dogs..they can be retrained. But you dont want to go to jail either, with kids in the home. Discharging a fire arm in city limits is illeagal, so the dog would actually have to be on you for you to claim"self defence". Try a can of mace, bear spray, throw stones. The guy who owns the dogs should be givin a stern warning by animal control...leash laws are in effect and he is required to have them under control.

If the cats get into my garbage, hell yes I will shoot them (and I normally keep a couple cats myself; landlord wont let me though frown ). And cats can be just as dangerous as dogs to a child. I know this from first hand experience.

Do cats come over into your yard? If so are you going to shoot them as well..go over and give the dog owner a SLAP its not the dogs fault its the owners....jmodrinker

Well regardless when the option is there to call someone first that is the way it should be done. And if it was me they would have been called long before now the first time I would maybe consider it was a mistake the second time I would have been calling the Police Department I don't believe in playing Russian roulette.

two sundays ago, my neighbor across the street opened his door to let two golden retrievers loose (they stand about waist high on me) to run across the street and threaten me and my boys while we were walking to church. He played it off as soon as I turned to the dogs and told them "NO! GO HOME!" and started calling them to come home, though he made no move to come across the street after them. Even though he made a smartass comment afterwards about letting them bite next time, I let it go. Today, the dogs were loose to begin with, and again came across the street to threaten me and my boys in our own yard. They constantly threaten anyone walking down the road, or driving down the road, and anyone in their yards, even when on their chains, which the one breaks all the time.

Today, I called the dog warden about it, who is coming over to get involved. To be honest, if I had a shot gun, I would have gone back inside and grabbed it (sent the kids in immediately as it is).

I only see trouble in the future due to this, but I am not gonna stand by and let them terrorize us or others with their dogs. What do you think?

You seem to have a tremendous amount of "issues" with your neighbors......

Neighbors yells at my kids...
Dogs bark at my kids....
Neighbors kids yell at my kids....
Neighbors yell at me about yelling at them....

In the end YOU are always "right" and are only doing what is "best for your children"....

YET,,,,,for some reason.....you need validation for all your actions........

Yes, Daniel you are ....

" good enough, and smart enough, and doggone it, people like you."

I take it Keith that you are against people owning guns, or something. I never said I would shoot the owner, or another person (although if I am being attacked by a person, yes it would be a possible option). I garuntee you I have received more intensive firearms safety than the average citizen, and I am an adamant enforcer of gun control and firearm safety. I personally do not believe in the average citizen being able to own a hand gun, only shot guns and rifles, but that is my opinion, and I have very good reasons for such.

but as I have said, when the dog is attacking, you have to defend first. And when the dog is half your size and attacking, nine out of ten times it is going to require violence in some form to handle the dog, if the owner refuses or is incapable of handling the dog themself. AS someone pointed out, dogs are natural killers, even the tiniest and cutest of them.

When you buy home owner insurance you have to pay a higher premium if you have a dog. Because if a person comes into your yard at night and is bitten he can sue

If a person comes into my yard at night and gets bit, they deserve it!

But, I haven't had a dog in over 25 years. Don't miss it, either. I'll stick with my kitty cat.

I agree, and thats what I did this time. The first time, when they bolted out the door, I gave the guy the benefit of the doubt, as they bolted out the door. This time (the second) however, they were loose to begin with, so once they were back home, I called the authorities, who are supposed to be coming out to take care of the situation.

yeah I agree they deserve it. That's the dogs job is to keep people out. But legally even a burglar in your house can sue if he is bitten. And according to my insurance agent they usually win

A high powered sling shot hangs on my back door to take care of pesky animals. Last yr I hit this squirrel in the head as he was dashing across the year. He went rolling a bit and continued to the field.
It seems to keep them off my back deck.

I AM a christian, and I am also a firm believer in the least violent action necessary. However, as I have said before, when the dog is already in attack mode and aggressive, milk bones, and kind words are not going to do any good. At this point you have to defend first. In my case, I was able to get the dogs back across the street, without anything physical happening (the least violent method available). BUT, if one had snapped at me, you can bet I would have gotten more physical and more violent as needed until either they left, or one of us was too hurt to continue.

Well hopefully they will I know where I live the neighbors had left their dogs out of the back yard for a week. I waited and waited to no luck. The dogs are friendly the Electric guy did not know that and was scared of one of them. So I called and reported it within and hour the dogs were back in the backyard.....These people have a fenced in backyard and no excuse. Already seen one of their little dogs get ran over last year and figured it was going to happen again.

But anyone that will let their dogs out at that size knowing there are kids that close needs to be dealt with through the Police...... It is not the dogs fault the owner is ignorant.

I suggest you reread the original post, as I believe I already explained everything you are talking about. And I fail to see the similarities between a cat tearing up my garbage, and a trash guy picking up my garbage.

that's just the difference between city people and country people

city people have been taught to be passive and let someone else handle it for em. City people for some reason can't seem to imagine someone owning a gun without freaking out and shooting somebody

country people have been taught to take care of it and handle it themselves.

I've seen too many sheep with their throats ripped out by cute little muffin the family pet. Too many horses crippled by dogs that their owners let run loose cause they were so lovey and friendly with the family

People need to keep their animals under control or they lose em

exactly, and I called the police first. They referred me to the warden, I am assuming because no one was outright physically attacked.

referred you to the warden - aren't wardens the head honchos of the correctional facility?

No local ASPCA, Animal Control???
