I have grown up in a City, in a time when it was still looking bombed
out after the war. My parents both had seen the war as children and had
consequently to grow up without fathers.
They wanted it better for us.
They were fairly poor, my father had just gone self employed in his
trade, but they built this little house in the country, for us children
to learn to cope without the things we took for granted.
I loved to be there, got up in the morning and went out into the woods,
and often I wasn't seen until evening. First my parents were worried,
told me never to go without my brother, but it never worked that way. My
brother was discontent out there, he found it boring, and often took out
his boredom on anthills or birds nests.
So I rather went alone, and I learned so much.
We had to sell because the Nato opened an army camp not far from there
and things weren't peaceful anymore.
Later, when my son was born I leased a garden plot in the outskirts, it
was not quite country like, but it wasn't big City. I bought bikes and
took him on tours further out, were there were real woods and we spent a
lot of time watching birds and small animals.
But we still lived in the City, my son had friends, and these friends
had all these war toys. Naturally enough he wanted them, too. More than
once I had arguments with my then husband and with my parents, all
prepared to give him what he wanted.
At the end I won the battle. I sent my son to the boy scouts, sent him
playing soccer, so he could get rid of the energy that was building up.
And on my first real holiday (We had been self employed for years) I
took him back packing here in Ireland.
There was not always a hostel or a B&B, so a couple of times we just
slept rough.
As the law in Germany requires that a young man has to do his time in
the army or do Community Service, he chose the army.
Not for the pleasure of carrying a weapon, but because at the same time
he could further his education.
He is a big softy and I'm proud of him.

i have recieved many students here in my home for a year from this
German system of service. A boy can opt for community service but he has
to be sponsored a bit and so there are a selection of areas he can go ,
driving the elderly or help with basis school, the Waldorf education is
endorsed by the gov. and offers a program for those boys to step into.
i am like the den mother.... hahahhahaaa all these fresh young boys
that are truely pacifists...hahahahha come live here and do their
service with the school,
become activists ( after living with me lol) and go on to university.

hehhehehheeee ok ok get your mind out of there

why doesn't the US do that? why are it's enlisted men obliged to carry?
or do they..

fanta, what Alex means is:

In German law young man HAVE to do time in the army.
A pacifist though can refuse, but he has to do time in charity,
community service or other things

Question: Do you have the same in America?
