The house next to me is unrented and the yard only gets mowed every few weeks and it looks a mess. On a positive note, it does make my property look very well groomed compared to it! I'm not embarrassed by it, because it does not belong to me.

You have to have city codes to keep hoarders from going overboard, but banning parking in gravel driveways seems a bit extreme. There should be some way to get out of that, if it was never an issue before now.

To keep it from being unoccupied and unkept, the City should force the owners to occupy it, rent it out, sell it or open it up to a homeless family.

Spread the wealth, I'm broke.

with all these foreclosures happening, my local govt is considering boarding up empty homes to get ready for the hurricane season and to prevent vandalism/squatting.

but you know nothing in life is free

ACORN has been working on a plan to house the Homeless in foreclosed homes.
Some States are already putting them in them. I believe, Ca. for one.

heard they wanted to do the same in FL, not sure it passed

hey keep in mind that your neighbors or neighboring properties do affect your property value.

regardless of whether you have the prettiest privacy fence or not.

It does affect property values big time!

I just called the city because a house near me had grass over 2 ft. tall. Nobody lives there right now.

It looks awful and promotes skeeters and fleas.

My child was embarrassed about it when a classmate brought them home from an activity.

So it is more a social stigma than anything.

It looks horrible. It makes the whole street look bad. How is that a social stigma?

Also, fleas start showing up and skeeters. Mice like it in there too.

Lions and tigers and bears oh my! City mice are more likely to set up sho in your home than an over grown lot. Fleas and mosquito are parasites that go where they can find food, in city environment your yard would offer more food.

I live in the city. This house was two houses from me.

The last time it happened, my dog got fleas. I don't have mice, btw. I want to keep it that way too.

Like I said, it makes the whole street look bad.

Would you want your children playing near it?

they should not be there

it is not there yard to be in

and it probably belongs to a bank or the city

and is unoccupied go fight with them if you want

go check the survey maps they will tell ya who own it

or ya could buy it then ya wouldn't have to worry about it

They are not in the yard. They play on the sidewalk.

I did call the city. They came and cut the grass.

Unrealistic suggestion - buying the house.

the sidewalk is not a play ground it is a pathway to get from point a to point be

they should not be playing on it

Children have ALWAYS played on sidewalks. It's safer then the street. See the chalk drawings on the sidewalks. They ride their bikes, roller skate, play square ball, hopscotch, and stepball. They push their baby dolls in strollers.

The backyard is for playing catch, swimming pools, water play, swing sets, sandboxes, etc. I have a tetherball and basketball in the backyard too.

can I come over and play

We had sidewalks growing up but mostly the little kids got to play on the sidewalks, us bigger kids played in the street - keep in mind was not a major street.

they should not be playing in the streets either those are paths for nonpedetrians to get from point a to point be

neither the sidewalk nor the street are there for the children they have a purpose and playing is not that purpose

you haave a yard for that

if it is not big enough buy more yard or do not over populate the yard you have

the tall grass has been around a lot longer than sidewalks or streets if you want to use the always excuse

it is nice you have games for the kids to play in your back yard that is a good thing

===================================================================

nad i really do not care if they play on the sidewalk

but if you tell others then expect others to tell you

and soon there we be nowhere but where you are

It could be the same reason it's illegal to park on the ground or gravel in a lot of places in California. The idea is that oil from the car on the ground can seep into ground water and contaminate it. Of course they have that same law here in Los Angeles and we don't have any ground water, it's a freaking desert! laugh

It's been a law here a long time and I've gotten a ticket for it myself, and you can't beat it here, even though law for this area is stupid.

true. it would be IMO the same as parking in the yard.

I know there are a lot of stupid laws that some may not agree with...but it is the law and the tickets were $25

I have two $50 parking tickets for not moving my car off the road during a snow ordinance. I refuse to pay either, one was given even before they plowed the road and the other, not only had they not plowed the road yet, but the storm had just started while I was working and hadn't had time to move it.

yeah, my ticket was twice that. I suspect the mayor misspoke a that it is a city ordinance that is being violated rather than a law. I'd be willing to bet it's been on the books for a long time just not inforced. Some bright @sshole figured it be a quick way to line the city coffers to run out and ticket a bunch of people 99% of whom will simply pay.

I saw that. I wonder just how many were ticketed. If it's significant then I suspect that excuse it BS.

I do wonder if they have gravel driveways at least some of them must be permitted. Why would the city issue a permit for a drive way that's illegal to use? For anyone that did have a permitted driveway I suspect that would get them out of the ticket.

since the residents were complaining about it and tattling on their neighbors...I suspect some people do think it's a problem

I have a neighbor who just uses such things to get back at neighbors. We have parking restrictions on my street after 10am on wed and thur for street cleaning. Under normal circumstances as long as you don't happen to be parked in a no parking area when the street sweeper shows up odds are you won't get a ticket. But if the petty little twit is mad at you (no he hasn't caugh me yet LOL), he'll call the police 1 min after 10am to report you.

One of my landlords when I lived in NY was like that, he'd stand by the door with phone in hand, the other homeowners were so used to him that they'd give him enough time to call the city and complain. They'd wait for him to hang up and then they would all go out and move their vehicles to an appropriate parking. It was a sight laugh
