DOOM 3:

It's funny how when it takes such a long time to make another sequel that some people look at the title and wonder "When did Doom's 1 and 2 happen?" laugh I actually had someone ask this question to me, and I quickly punched them in the face and cried "foul"!pitchfork laugh

In any case, the third installment was all I hoped it would be. It is actually a frightening game (first time you play it) if you turn the sound up and turn the lights off. And it is what the first two Doom's were.....hella fun! You don't get to use the BFG alot, but you just feel wicked once you get the thing. There is supposed to be another edition into the series, but when that will happen is anyone's guess. I just ask for one thing....more time to enjoy the BFG!

METAL GEAR SOLID (PSOne):

Hideo Kojima took a big risk. Back in 1998, not only was he reviving a game that hardcore fans of it loved. He was also about to turn video gaming on its' head. How many games (back then) were actually thought of as more of a movie than a game? Very, very few. Yeah, games had cutscenes, but Kojima wanted more. Not only would the gameplay be there, but the story and the cutscenes would also play an intregal part.

MGS4 is, without a doubt, the full masterpiece I feel Kojima alwats envisioned. The graphics are fallable in that game. But, back then, Kojima worked with what he had. And, the end result is a game that I truly treasure. The Metal Gear saga is a story of triumph, of heartache, of love, and of loss. And MGS set the stage for all of it. And the game gave us one of the most memorable boss fights of all time when Solid has to face Psycho Mantis.

The revamped version of this game (exclusively on the gamecube) gives you better graphics. But I still hold the original as something that is unique all on its' own. There will always be something special about this game.

re 5 was pretty cool

I second that. Over all the best game of the year. And The "mercenaries reunion" DLC will only add replay value to it.

Barbarians on the Commodore 64

Long before Mortal Kombat, there was this game. And if you did it just right you could chop off your opponent's head.

Agreed. Maybe someone can suggest it to the mods.

Best game of all time? The decision is so wide open.

The best old school era game by far would have to be River City Ransom for the NES. I loved knocking enemies out just to see the comical look on their punk faces, and the physics system was groundbreaking for its time.

The best "Golden Age of Video Games" game is definitely Donkey Kong Country 1, 2 and 3 for the Super NES. Pseudo 3D was a glorious thing at the time...

The best "pre-modern" game would be WWF No Mercy for the N64. Well rounded wrestling sim with a bulked up "Create-A-Wrestler" system? love

And finally, the best of the modern era, that is, the "you can do anything you want to in video games" era, well, choices choices choices. I'd go with Fable 1 and 2 (and likely the upcoming 3) for such a wide open experience that you can literally play for the 40th time and uncover something new (and extorting villagers never gets old). Assassin's Creed 1 and 2 for the story and cinematics, and Psychonauts and Deathspank for their quirky randomness. Nothing quite like literally going inside people's minds to sort out their junk in the former, or "following the path of the sacred bacon" in the latter.

For the record, Overlord and Alan Wake are up there as well.

Conkers Bad Fur day anyone? 007 Golden Eye? Perfect Dark? atleast on the N64 front. for the 360, I'd say borderlands is the most amusing, but best? not sure. Viva Pinata? cus you can lose Days on that thing without realizing it. PC: UT GotY Ed. the first UT none of these crapy 2003+ ones
