Topic: Ten Commandments | |

Maybe this is the way to teach the 10 Commandments today! Maybe then people would "get it" and it wouldn't be construed as 'religious ed'. Tennessee Ten Commandments Some people in Tennessee have trouble with all those "shalls" and "shall nots" in the Ten commandments. Folks just aren't used to talking in those terms. So, some folks in middle Tennessee got together and translated the "King James" into "Jackson County" language.... no joke, read on... The Hillbilly's Ten Commandments (posted on the wall at Cross Trails Church in Gainesboro, < /B>TN.) (1) Just one God (2) Honor yer Ma & Pa (3) No tellin' tales or gossipin' (4) Git yourself to Sunday meetin' (5) Put nothin' before God (6) No foolin' around with another fellow's gal (7) No killin' (8) Watch yer mouth (9) Don't take what ain't yers (10) Don't be hankerin' for yer buddy's stuff Now that's kinda plain an' simple, don't ya think? Y'all have a nice day. Kat |

If you believe the Bible is actually the word of God then commandments
1, 4, & 5 were correctly translated. However, if you believe that the Bible is just one of many religious doctrines written by men, then you’d see those commands as reading. 1. Just one religion! 3. Come to our church! 4. Don’t even think about changing religions! You see, that’s the leap of ‘faith’ right there. People claim to have faith in God, but what they really have faith in is that the Bible is the word of God. I have faith in God, but I have absolutely no use for the Bible at all. I place no faith in the Bible no matter how it’s translated. |

I have one commandment in my world...
"Loving compassion for all beings." |

Well, the way I see it is that the 10 commandments were written for ALL
people to understand. Jess's commandment has to be lived from the moment you were born to be understood. Does that make sense? |

Yes Abra that's exactly what I'm saying. You either have it within
yourself or you haven't |

I don't...sorry..
I wasn't born nice..I am human, I make mistakes..I get it wrong...I can be selfish...and narrow minded...I am far from perfect... If I spend my life, every conscious moment, always being mindful of my surroundings and everything and everyone in it, and place none above nor beneath me, but always beside me..then I am living to my one commandment I follow. But I am not infallible...for unfortunately I walk in this human condition... Hope this makes sense.. |

I agree with both Invisible and Jess.
Like Jess, I think we all have the ability to be naughty or nice. And it really is a conscious decision to take one path versus the other. But like Invisible also suggests, we basically have it in us to choose which path we take. Can a person really be forced to chose to take a path via a list of commandments from a god? How pathetic if that was the only motivation for their choice. But hey, if it works for some people, so be it! If that’s the only thing that makes them behave themselves then I certainly don’t want to sway them away from their beliefs! I love posting the following quote of Einstein, and since it’s so fitting for this topic I’ll post it here again. ”A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death.” - Albert Einstein |

Yes, true, but by judging yourself, by knowing that your are not without
faults, flaws, do you not show the goodness within yourself? Not many people do that, don't even try to do it. |

That's a very good point Invisible - Bravo.

Abra, you certainly are free to believe what you wish. I have to wonder,
though, why you are so seemingly angry at God or anything that has to do with Him? I ask this because it seems you can't speak about God or the Bible without putting Him/it down, or, particularly, the people who believe in Him or who believe what the Bible teaches. You have stated on many many occasions, albeit perhaps not "verbatim," that people who believe in God (the God of the Bible) or who follow what the Bible teaches, are mindless idiots, are "pathetic" or are somehow "duped." You act as though you have it ALL figured out...the mystery of the universe. You act as though you are intellectually superior, not only to everyone else, but to God as well. You scoff in His face and belittle everyone and everything having to do with Him. I do believe in your right to interpret issues as you see fit, however, I also believe in my right to do that. So, on that note, frankly I'm getting a little bit beyond tired of hearing you insult people just because they believe in God or follow the Bible. What is it you're so afraid of, Abra? Methinks thou doest protest too much. Conscience bothering you these days, mayhaps? God might be talking to you. Something to think about, anyway. |
