Maybe all democrats should vote on Spanish ballots with instructions written in Spanish.......

What is so wrong about learning another language? It shows an education. It can be French, Spanish, Russian, or Chinese.
It shows an education.

There is nothing wrong with that if it is an individual's choice. All governmental capacities (county, city, state, nation) should be solely in English.

The firefighers and police officers would have a difficult time doing their job if they only knew English. So would the hospital employees. My city has Bosnians, Hispanics, Chinese, and more.

We are not of one culture. We are a melting pot.flowerforyou

Interpetors could easily perform these services without the necessity of everything being geared toward a bilingual society.

That's silly. Why do you want us to be a backwards nation?

Yes I agree...But it shouldn't be a requirement..

We should be in the 21st century and geared towards a multi lingual society.

Yes. Other countries have been doing that for years. It's about time that we did too.

I want my child to be ready for that and learn other languages.

We are in America, the land formed from people from every part of the world. Why would that change now? We are the melting pot, it has made us what we are today, why would we become prejudice against the "melting pot" now?

Our kids have the opportunity to study any language they want. Why make it Spanish, why not German/ french/ Greek????

When I searched on Ancestry. com, I found the 1930 census. Now this was in almost all white Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Do you know what other languages were spoken in these homes???
Swedish, German, Czech, Lithuanian, Russian,Finnish, Norwegian.

But in order to assimilate and be successful in the American Experience, they had to learn English. The sad part is they didn't keep the old language alive. My Mother could not speak any of those languages. For business and Gov. yes English, but remember everyone that came to this county came here speaking something else, except the English of course.

One would think that a presidential candidate who has no military service, who survived a public controversy about attending a church for 20 years where the pastor preached “hate America,” plus a flap about his refusal to wear an American flag pin, would bend over backward to showcase his patriotism. Yet Barack Obama has just given his critics another reason to question his support of American identity.

Obama, the Democratic junior senator from Illinois, said, “Understand this: Instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English ... you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish.” Who “needs to make sure”? Parents? Public schools? Government nannies? Expanding on this theme, Obama added, “You should be thinking about how can your child become bilingual ... . It’s embarrassing ... when Europeans come over here, they all speak English ... And then we go over to Europe, and all we can say is ‘Merci beaucoup.’”

Embarrassed? We surely don’t want a president representing our nation in foreign travels who is embarrassed about our country. We want a president who is proud to stand up for America, our culture, our language, our laws and our customs.

Most Americans look upon the English language as the No. 1 factor that defines our national identity: “e pluribus unum,” one nation out of many peoples. We want English to be our national, official language, spoken by all who call themselves Americans.

The Zogby Poll reports that 83 percent of Americans favor legislation to make English our official language. Thirty states have designated English as the official language of their states and 10 more are considering such legislation.

Obama is pandering to Hispanic voters by suggesting that the rest of us have a duty to speak Spanish. Most Americans not only don’t want to speak Spanish, we are annoyed by voices on the telephone telling us to “Press 1 (or sometimes 2) for English,” and we are outraged at the thought that a president would try to impose a Spanish obligation on us.

Only 26 percent of Americans, according to a Rasmussen survey, believe that every American should be able to speak two languages. Even that low number would probably nosedive if confronted with the notion that the government might enforce bilingualism on us.

Why should that second language be Spanish? The United States today has immigrants who speak more than 200 different languages. Should the Asian immigrants be forced to learn Spanish as well as English?

Obama’s statement is not only out of sync with the majority of Americans, but it is also condescending and further evidence of the elitist attitude the Obamas displayed when Barack looked down his nose at Americans whom he said rely on religion and guns because they are “bitter,” and when Michelle said that Barack’s campaign was “the first time” she was “really proud of my country.”

Americans are not backward hicks because we don’t learn a second language. We consider it a waste of time because English is fast becoming the worldwide language and because the ability to speak English is the litmus test of whether or not immigrants are assimilating into U.S. culture.

Obama conceded that immigrants should learn English, but, unfortunately, many do not. The Pew Hispanic Center reported that only 52 percent of Hispanic naturalized citizens speak English well or pretty well, and that 28 percent of Hispanic immigrants speak only Spanish on the job.

Obama voted in the U.S. Senate — on four roll call votes — against making English our official language. In 2006 and 2007 he voted twice against Oklahoma Republican Sen. James Inhofe’s amendment to repeal Bill Clinton’s Executive Order 13166 and voted twice in favor of Colorado Democratic Sen. Ken Salazar’s amendment to make Executive Order 13166 stronger than it already is.

Executive Order 13166 discourages assimilation by committing all executive-branch agencies to provide all federal benefits and services in foreign languages, even though the Supreme Court held in Alexander vs. Sandoval that immigrants have no right to demand this.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission discourages assimilation by suing more than 200 employers for requiring English to be spoken by employees on the job, even though a Rasmussen survey found that 77 percent of Americans believe that employers should be allowed to do this.

Providing foreign language ballots discourages assimilation. That comes despite the fact that only U.S. citizens are supposed to vote and that to become a naturalized U.S. citizen the immigrant must demonstrate “the ability to read, write and speak ordinary English.”

Bilingual education, known as language apartheid, discourages assimilation by keeping children with Hispanic-sounding names for years in Spanish-language public school classes — even though the voters in referenda from California to Massachusetts have rejected bilingual education.

It’s no surprise that the Rasmussen survey reports that 59 percent of Americans believe government actually encourages immigrants to retain their home-country culture instead of assimilating into America. Sen. and Mrs. Obama should tell immigrants to assimilate and get the facts from the new Bradley Foundation report called “E Pluribus Unum: America’s National Identity.

Isn't amazing what people of bad faith will come up with, and make up out of thin air just for the perverse pleasure of spreading gratuitous calumnies.

Have racist tendencies, or subtle redneck dispositions, as you may, but be clear that calumny is the signature of coward-like intent.

When there are no scandals, and a man's character is clean, calumnies will only come right back to bite the author up that place where sun rays don't reach.

The author has a right to his opinion and you do too but rather than a personal attack on the author why don't you support your objections.

Who suggested the author didn't have a righ to his opinion. I don't agree with the calumnious nature of the opinion, but I never suggested the author didn't have the right to voice it.

And I have supported my objection!!!

I'll summ it up if you wish:

'a juvenile calumnious attempt'.

Nothing more, nothing less.

That's how I supported my objection.

I agree but that should be an individual choice..The immigrants who come here ( legal ones and for that matter illegal ones ) have the opportunity to learn the English language but many chose not to. So why make me or my child learn Spanish if we choose not to.

Why not Spanish and German and French, the kid would get far in life.

It is a state requirement for high school students to have so many credit hours of foreign language already. I would think that a 4 yr. college may be the same way.

It is easier to learn it at a younger age though.

Few will object with such requirements as long as Spanish is not the only choice. Having one official language facilitates life, especially for employers. If employers want to facilitate non English speaking people that is OK but don't make such requirements mandatory for all employers by calling it discrimination.

Learning another language increase brain power.
It forces thought patterns through that would otherwise lay dormant.

As a Brit, I am proud that I speak English. I can communicate with millions of people that have learnt my language.
But I am ashamed that I have not made a reciprocal effort.

I think that all British children should have at least one language in the curriculum from age 7 right up until 16.

We have for too long thought of ourselves as elitist because people have to learn our language to communicate.

The US has 15% hispanic population. Which will rise as the birth rate is higher than in non-hispanic.

What is wrong with learning Spanish in school and making it comfortable for every one?

Short-sightedness is not just a British trait, I see.

You haven't been to Florida!!!! Its not mandatory and lets keep it that way. This post was started by a story of Obama stating we need to make sure our children speak Spanish. Our children and their parents have the right to chose their own path. It should be mandatory for immigrants to learn English. I have been as far to the other side of Africa and when you are out in other countries you better try to have aliitle knowledge of their language because its hard to find someone who speaks or understands English. I like Obama..

thanks Dragoness - when people are scared or have fear of the unknown (basically enough in this instance a foreign language) they add words or try to infer opinions onto others. flowerforyou

No one is forcing another to do anything. His suggestion, his idea, whats the big deal? Learn another language if you so choose to, reap the benefits. Dont learn another language if you chose not to, continue to complain about injustice.

sounds easy enough for me flowerforyou

Another post from a die-hard xenophobe!

I LOVE foreign languages, and wish that all of us in the US knew several.

Obama's commitment to the education of ALL our children, regardless of native tongue, is commendable and praiseworthy.

Obama cares deeply about our children and their future.

He will make a worthy, honorable and productive president.

McCain is a decent man, though I think he is far less capable than Obama. Both men deserve to be treated with respect: hatred directed toward either is vile and toxic.

Those who besmirch Obama, as this poster does here and has elsewhere, through hate-materials are beneath contempt, for they seek to poison our society with their hatred.
